Fall fertilizing???

Is there a rule for what should be given fertilizer in the fall? I've used timed-release food three times a year until this year and I don't know for sure if I should be adding any "food" before it gets really cold.

The only plant feeding I do this time of year is for my tropical plants. These plants will be in a plant room for winter and will continue to bloom. They will not go dormant.
