Maria...I'm SOOOOoooo glad you got a good night's rest. And I hope the day ahead is better for you as well.

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!!!

Sarv...please save me one of those stuffed green peppers. What should I make to go with them? (Have fun at the 'H & P'...and don't get yourself too stiff, ok?)

~julie~

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

thanks, Julie, just finished posting in #38 when you changed to a new one.:-)
Maria

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Good morning,

Just a quick check-in.

defoecat - do you know any good jokes I can relate to poverty in the east end of Canada's national capital? I agree it would be a great start to the speech, but I'm not having much luck coming up with anything.
Anyway, today is my "day off"! Just got back from Aquafit. Am draining the turkey bones I simmered all night. Have an appointment for massage therapy at 11 to see if I can work on the arm which has been sore since my trip out west. (Same thing happened last year and I think it is related to rolling my suitcase for some distance).
Will spend the afternoon working on the speech. Then Handbell choir at 6 pm followed by a quick practice with the vocal choir because the anthems for the next two Sundays have a viola part.

That being the case, I might scan messages as an escape, but I probably won't be back till tomorrow.

Have a good day everyone.

Ann

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Where is everybody??

Ann, I always made soup from the turkey bones when ever I roasted one, it tasted yum.

Himrod, NY(Zone 6a)

Oh my goodness, a new thread and I haven't made it half way thru the last one!

Thoughts and prayers to Maria, Sarv, Ann and Darius. Other who I may have missed it is a memory thing not trying to slight. Don't know where my days are going but they sure are going and dragging me behind them. Love the furkids........have 5 cats and that is enough but love to look and listen to the stories.

Tuesday went on a 'field' trip to Syracuse with 4 local GOB's. I was the baby at 53 and the oldie but goodie is 59. Can you say FUN....we went to The Christmas Tree Shop, Rag Shop, Fat Shop er I mean Fashion Bug, Michael's, Zeb's for lunch and finished off with Big Lots. I drove (heck I invited myself) and we laughed, talked, interrupted, laughed and shook our heads in wonder at some of the antics my cousin has pulled along the NYS thruway. Needless to say think of Maxine!

Other than that it has been the same old thing here. Love reading everyone elses adventures I am trying to catch up.......and here I add to the mix. Oh lest I forget, welcome to the newbies this is a grand thread!

-Joy

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Mornin everyone,

I just left chat and I'm reading up on the last thread, but I just have to say:

BAL!!! YOU BAD!!!

mg

Oh, should I start a GOB RU thread? In the RU forum or here in the Lot?

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

I'm here!! Just got back from the huff and puff place. It was full - and lots of fun listening to everyone gab. It is definately a young person or retired persons place. I fit in the latter. The old gals tend to be pudgie with short thinning hair - the young ones skinny with long locks and big you know whats!!

Maria - I loved your DH comments about how 'they' looked!! He had quite a sense of humor!! Glad you slept better - are you taking something to help sleep? I have slept pretty good the last few nights- still wake up, but am able to nod off again, but am always up early...

MIL has called 5 times this morning. The first time I was on a garden walk and ran back to house to see on caller ID that it was her. I didn't want to listen to her complaining, so I didn't answer it, just went back outside to enjoy my flowers. Now I see that she called 4 more times. I unhooked my answering machine as I was tired of getting her messages. I imagine she wants me to do something for her - one of her daughters was at her house yesterday, but she wants ME to do drive her places.

I need to get myself out to the barn to paint more on my garden shelves. I really need to dig things up, but tomorrow it is supposed to reach 70 - almost unheard of here this late in the year. We haven't had a hard frost yet, just a light one, so all my dahlias are still blooming their fool heads off.

Gotta go change and get busy.

Making chicken soup for dinner....

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

It must be fun to have GOB's living near by, and be able to get together, lucky you, Joy.
Maria

Himrod, NY(Zone 6a)

Maria, didn't mean to confuse, the GOB's I went with were friends that would fit right in here at DG but don't know about our fun yet. So sorry I mislead.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

That's ok, Joy,:-))

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Maria, how great a good night's sleep must feel for you! I'm sleeping waaaay too much and don't even feel rested when I do get up. I'm thinking I should ask my doctor about an anti-depressant.

Rob't, good play on words, you rascal!

Gosh, I've read so many posts this morning that I've forgotten who asked about my heating problem...

Anyway, I have some new fears that it may not happen. I spoke to Robin (my landlord's friend who lives upstairs in the wing) about when Mark is coming back. She said this weekend because he has NO work, whereas he had 2 years of work (landscaping) on the books before Katrina! He lives/works on the Gulf Coast near Gulfport.

He told her that folks are needing to repair homes first, and that so many are out of work that they are unwilling to spend money on landscaping. His sister there lost house, everything, and his Nursery which was in a lease/buy contract to some new folks was destroyed.

He also said his own house (which he rents out and he lives in the cabin behind it) in the middle of 30 acres has so many trees down that he could work sunup to sundown for a year and not get it all cleaned up.

I'm sure his diminished financial position will affect me, somehow.

The elec. was only off a few hours, and I'm glad to be back online. However, I have put off a bunch of errands for today so I think I'd best get at them.

Later, Folks.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

I'm sure a late starter today Haven't even gotten dressed yet! Good long time spent catching up. I had a good night's sleep too, but have to credit the OTC sleep helpers. Found DH sleeping on the couch this morning, said he didn't want to wake me up....but then he overslept! Good hint about the big bottles of diphenhydramine but Walgreens just had a two-fer sale on their pm sleep meds so I'm stocked up for now. Maria, you and I shared a good night's sleep, isn't it wonderful to get up and feel rested?

I think I have to make another visit to a podiatrist...my feet are giving me messages to stay off them, and I have too much to do...the arch supports I got last helped quite a bit, but they aren't doing the job now. Medicare doesn't cover them either, and they are pricey.

Started sewing yesterday and took in the waist band on two pairs of cords I got on sale at Penney's..luckily they had a belted waist band and I could slip elastic inside it and not have to take apart side seams and do all that extra work. Got the top cushion part of the hassock covered, now have to tackle the base. Supposed to be warm today and tomorrow so it's time to do some more clean up outside.

Everyone has been so busy! I can't always respond individually to everyone who posts, but I love reading all the daily doings, and of course, mean to say hello to all of you when I get here.

Drinking and driving...what a combination, I totally agree with everyone's comments on how dangerous it is. DH used to put away quite a lot of beer, especially after his softball games and even after his weekly night class when he was going to college. He had one dui before we got married, and insisted he was a good driver. He got one afterwards and I told him, three strikes and you are OUT. I will not tolerate it. He stopped. He has a family with a history of alcoholism, and decided not to tempt fate. Or lose his wife, one or the other, never sure which was the deciding factor but at least now I don't worry when he's late. I agree that those who are caught should do public service in emergency rooms, that might open their eyes better than all the classes and lectures would.

Time for lunch, maybe the leftover italian sausage I baked with potatos, onions, green beans and carrots the other night! My new food processor arrived yesterday and it's a beauty! DD is getting my old one which makes her happy. Don't know how much longer it will last but since she doesn't have one, it's better than nothing.

So happy for those who are sleeping better, feeling better or just plain having fun. Have a great day, GOBs!

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Darius, definitely check with your doctor. No point waiting for even a situational depression to go away by itself.

And, yes Robert the Rascal is a clever wordsmith! But he better be careful or he'll end up in the booby hatch. Ha!

Plus, how am I gonna get out of here if people keep posting? LOL

Gone for sure this time. Maybeeeeeee

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

I *LOVE* this place!!!

Joy...I wish I had a few of GOB's (Friends that lived close by) too. I've lived much of the past 25 years in the boonies pretty much alone. And at the job, I was the only female so no one to talk to there either. (Good thing DH was the boss and one of our kids worked there too. At least we had lunch with 'friends' (each other!))

Darius...I'm glad your power wasn't out long. When you talk about your landlord, it sure brings the tradegy of the hurricanes to life in my mind. I hope everything turns out better for him in the long run. (That's the best any of us can hope for...no matter what.)

Hi Maria...Sarv...Ann...Gayle...and anyone else who was writing at the same time as me. (LOL)

~julie~
(who is making out another order for seeds and more spring bulbs at the moment. hehehe)

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7b)

Good late morning to all you GOBs and GOBettes! I don't even know where to start except to say you all are a wild bunch and I just love all the energy in here! It's so nice to see such a chatty group who support each other in so many ways. You're all lovely and fabulous and kind and caring and companionable. It's such a TREAT to read this thread!

I'm working this weekend, starting this afternoon, so I'll probably not be around too much. I received a phone call this morning from one of the ER docs I work with to tell me his oldest daughter had a heart attack last night. She's 41 years old with metastatic cancer and has been undergoing chemo and radiation treatments for the last 8 months. She's down in Seattle and will be having an angiogram this morning, and probably stent placements, depending on the results of the angiogram. I feel so badly, this man is such a wonderful person and a GREAT healer. He's so compassionate, kind and caring and I just hate to see him having to deal with all these things. The doc himself had a craniotomy last year for a brain tumor. He came back to work in 3 weeks because he said it was too boring to stay home. I wish he and his family the best of luck.

Now, as to the rest of you who may be dealing with whatever malady, ailment, situation, depression, etc., may I offer that I send all my support, strength and compassion in your directions. You're a great bunch, keep up the good works!

As ever,
Babs

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Babs, it just goes to show you some peaple have much bigger health problems than most of us.

I have the forgetting problem today, I posted three emails to a wonderful friend this morning, because I sent it then I forgot what else I wanted to say and did it again, he must think I am slowly developing Alzheimers :-)))) but I think it is all that interruption from coughing and getting up from this chair too often.
Maria

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Babs...my thought and prayers go out your doctor friend and his daughter. I've been through the angio/stent routine several times. The first one was the worst...the last one (due to new methods of treating the incision with a "plug") was *wonderful*! It also might have helped if the silly nurses or doctors who finished up the first one wouldn't have taped my BELLY to my THIGH!! LOL (It took me several days to figure out why I couldn't stand up without pain...and I couldn't figure out WHY it was where it was! :-D) Have a good weekend...and stay out of trouble.

Maria...I don't think you're having any memory problems greater than mine. It takes me so long to write my posts here that the interruptions (normal household and 'potty break' kinds) that I rarely remember what I've written until it's too late. LOL

~julie~

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Usually I am not a slave to the phone, Judy, and I do shut it off and just listen to messages, or when I am on the messenger but because I have felt so rotten my children call me want to make sure I am OK.
Maria

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

I do understand, Maria. I have started shutting my phone off when I don't want to be disturbed, but I do check my messages often in case of emergency. But you do need your rest so you can get better.

Take care,
Jody

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

I know right now I feel absutely awful :-((((

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Taking a break from making dinner - awful hamburg helper for tonight- don't anyone come over!! I've been working in the barn all day painting my plant shelves. Have half done and already in the stands - looks good!! I'll finish the rest tomorrow. Now we just need to get some new lights. Hopefully this weekend.

DH just moved all the lawn furniture/tables into the barn for the winter- good job done!! We still need to put up the gutter mesh stuff before the leaves come tumbling down. It is supposed to be nice tomorrow, so maybe we'll get it done then. It has to be his idea ya know... Chimney needs cleaning, but since we did it last fall I am sure DH won't want to tackle it again. We had a chimney fire one year and I am nervous if it isn't cleaned yearly.

I love talking on the phone - in fact my sister and I talk every Sat for 1 to 2 hrs!! It used to be on long distance, but since I have a cell phone, it is FREE!!!!

Nice of your kids to keep checking on you Maria...

Man, isn't that rain out east something!!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Maria - is it still the cold stuff making you feel punk??? If so, you need to get to the doc - maybe you need something!! Remember how the GOB nagged me about my tooth - now I'm gonna nag you!!!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Sarv, I'll Dmail you about brugs, but I have a new flush of buds! (I'm not a brug person and refuse to go to the Brug Forum because they have had so much contention there.)

Tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes and now rain/floods and aftershocks... How MUCH can this lovely Blue Planet and the people on it take? Makes me very ill to consider what has happened in just one year globally. Kaleem, one of our Pakastani subscribers says locally they say the death toll will be 80,000, and there are 5 million homeless. Makes Katrina look like play school and we all are familiar with how devastating that has been.

Don't even think of adding Avian Flu to the list. I may have to find a BIG rock to hide under, or maybe a cave. (With a garden outside!) : )

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

Is anyone making chicken soup tonight? Maria could sure use some!

Please take care of yourself, Maria!

Jody

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Robert, you are sure a ballsy guy!! LOL. Yes, I do keep abreast of things, especially upper appendages.

Well glad some GOB's had a good night's sleep. I was doing fine until about 3 am, when I was awakened by a loud crash. Jumped up turned on lights to see what was happening. Was indoor persian cat "Boots" who had jumped up on the vanity in the bathroom, knocking off a candle, and glass candle holder, onto a 3foot ceramic vase. Glass was everywhere, closed the door and declared that bathroom off limits until a decent hour. Boots sleeps all day, then during the night when she wants to go out, won't jump on the bed to wake me, as Mr B (Jack Russell) is sleeping at my feet, she resorts to other methods to wake me. Before Mr. B was a resident here, she would just walk across my face!!

Joyous I too have neighbors that visit, go out or have coffee. They are GOB's but not at Daves.

Aria, sorry about the cold, the back. I agree with Sarv, maybe it's time you went to the Dr. to get something for the cold. Don't want to go into winter with it.

Meezer, sorry about your feet. When your feet hurt, you hurt all over.

Darius, please consult a Dr. and get an anti-depressant. Sometimes it makes all the difference in the world. However, your depression makes sense with everything you have gone through during the past few months. Your heating situation is not sounding good. Sorry for his troubles with work and the hurricane, but he has a moral and legal obligation to furnish you with acceptable heat.

Julie, "taped your belly to your thigh" I am sure that you thought they had maimed you for life.

Sarv, good going on the shelves. I didn't do much today, as I ran myself ragged yesterday. Did go check on the "mothers" this morning. Made that comment in front of son's girl friend, her eyes got big, and then she started laughing. She though that I was getting vulgar. She said you scared me, as you don't ever say anything like that.

Babs so sorry about ER DR and his daughter. Sometimes it seems that health issues and bad luck run in families. Stay alert and on your toes this weekend. I would love to have you as a nurse, seems that you are caring and indeed have a good sense of humor.

Viola Ann, no I can't think of any jokes that would fit the situation. I know that you will do a fantastic job.

Sarv, my peppers didn't do much all summer, but now have about 20 on 4 plants. Before the summer is over I will have stuffed peppers, and some to chop and put in the freezer.

Well, going to finish folding a load of clothes, and take a shower, but will check in later this pm.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Quoting:
but he has a moral and legal obligation to furnish you with acceptable heat

Actually he doesn't, since I have NO lease. He could just give me 30 days' notice and hope either for a summer tenant who would pay year 'round, or one who wouldn't complain about the heat. Besides, what's the definition of "acceptable"?? He has the same heat upstairs in his area.

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Hi all!

Well - the news is - it AIN'T my gallbladder! It is irritable bowel syndrome complicated by my already having gastric reflux and producing too much acid - so - we'll try meds and see what happens. Actually I've felt better today - but I didn't eat much yesterday and also didn't get dressed! SO....that's the news. I guess I'm relieved that it's NOT my gallbladder, but it would have been nice for it to have been and we could have gotten it outta there! Oh well. I'm also ernestly going to try to start walking and watching what I eat.....because I really think if I wasn't so overweight I wouldn't have such problems. But - then again - I'd still have stress!

Thanks so much to everyone for your thoughts and prayers - really means a lot.

Later!

Marcia

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Marcia (BB) That's GREAT NEWS!! Hopefully the meds will work for you. I'm glad you had a better day today.

Darius...I was going to add a comment about all the disasters and 'how much more' can everyone take...I think we're on the same wave-length. I hadn't heard the 80k number. :-O And if you find that cave with the garden outside...can we come to visit? ;-)

Bonnie...I nearly spit my iced tea on that "maimed for life" remark. LOL Not to mention the 'ballsy' comment. LOL & LOL (You guys are getting 'nasty'. :-D)

Jody...my DIL brought me over some nice homemade chicken and noodle soup this afternoon...I'll share with Maria.

Sarv...I used to spend a lot of time long-distance with my sisters too. It was *fantastic* to feel like I had a family again. But then the *bills* came in and I nearly lost my marriage. LOL Now I have a cell phone and don't feel the least inclined to call anyone. :-)

Well...I'm off for the night...Hope y'all sleep well!

Good night 'Gracie'

~julie~

Millbury, MA(Zone 5a)

Hi,
Just dropping in to say I'm still here. My sympathy to all who are ailing. I'm still hacking and honking, but had to go back to work today. DH has been manning my store for me, but paperwork and bills were piling up.

Darius (and anyone else who visits that well populated "black hole") have you tried St. Johnswort? I find it does help to take the edge off and the best thing about it is it's free if you grow it yourself or find it by the roadside.

There's been way too much for me to comment on over the past couple of days! Three cheers for all the people who have been giving their all to help others and a pat on the back for everyone just getting on with all the daily stuff that needs doing.

It's been a long day so I think I'll just gather up the tissues, antihistamines, cough syrup, etc. and waddle off to bed.

Goodnight all.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Julie, IF / WHEN I find the Cave with a garden, you have an open invitation! This entire world-wide weather disaster thing is straining all of our resources (financial and emotional), even for the local people willing to pitch in to physically help despite their emotional toll. They must, after all... it is their mother, their child, their neighbor's child, their cousin...

D'Cat, I must have missed the "maimed for life" remark... So many wonderful folks posting here that I now miss a lot.

We need more of Robert's wit to cheer us... or maybe his baking. (If not both!)

Goodnight, Gracie!

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Night all, see you in the morning! Let's hope for sunshine for Maine, they've had enough rain!

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Ok, here is something to cheer you all up with.
This picture I took this evening. My dahlias are still going and am surprised on how well they are doing.
So take a min. to look at the flowers (can't say to smell them because dahlias don't smell, lol) and take a deep breath.
Now, don't you feel better knowing that the flowers are there to make you feel better?

Take a walk outside in the fresh air to clear your brain and heart. It will help, I know.

My mother told me many years ago that these 3 things are important in life. 1- to have someone to love, 2- to have something to do, and 3- have something to look forward to. I have always believed this!!!
Hope everyone has a better day tomorrow.

McCool, I have been missing your posts. Sorry to hear that you are one of the "sniffle casualities"

Darius the maimed for life comment was made about a mammogram that I had yesterday. Drat I hate them things. In context I said that men who had to have their parts mashed like we do, would be maimed for life. I am sure that the designers of this machine are men!! Oh can I have an invite to that cave occasionally?

Betsy Bug, don't know if that is good news or bad news. If it was the gallbladder, they could pluck it out and be done with it. Now you will have to take the meds and watch your diet, and they claim exercise is really important to keep things moving. So did they give you a diet to follow. Used to have a neighbor who had that, and she was litterly reduced to processing her food in a blender. YUK, can you imagine what green beans look like from a blender? In later years, after she had heart surgery, and the restrictions from the IBS, she ate cereal most of the time. What kind of life is that?

Julie, not getting nasty, just wanted to let Robert know that I do keep abreast, and that he is not the only "wordsmith" in this forum. LOL. Wonder where he is, maybe the fence building has gotten him all "wired up"!! ROBERT, I really do love you. Come on back and play!!

Well I have a chiropractors visit in the morning, and then I am going back to the grocery I shop in, the one that is closing, as all of the merchandise is 50%-75% off tomorrow. I plan to stock up on paper products, as I always buy them. Then DGD is coming tomorrow afternoon for the weekend.

Have any of you had problems with flies getting in the house the last few days? Boy, I have had more this week than all summer long. As I trained my Jack Russell with a fly swat, can't even get it out when he is in the house. I didn't hurt him, just a tap to this stubby tail when he was doing something he wasn't supposed to. He doesn't blink an eye if DH has the fly swat, so DH is on permanent fly patrol until the weather dictates that they hibernate.

Well I am off to bed, hopefully not interrupted by a crash tonight. Cat is outside, so should be a quiet night.

Sleep well, dream little, snuggle close, wake refreshed.

DR, what a great picture. My dahlias are still blooming also. Also got a late tomato from the garden tonight. Love your mother's philosophy. All are very true. If we didn't have anything to look forward to, it would sure be a dull life.

I'm with you meezer, sunshine for MA.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

This will be short as I have to go to bed early and try to sleep fast, for tomorrow morning at 6:00 we leave on the 'great adventure' to Boise. Wonder if there is a 'Girlsie' somewhere ?. Black Holes! I've seen way too many of them. There are black holes, and there is the common everyday normal culturally induced sadness and depression. Hope everyone who is suffering is suffering from the latter 'cuz that one goes away quicker. Tried to think of something witty, but I'm only half here due to the excitement of getting the new girl on saturday.Boy, I can't even think of anything half witty. One thing that keeps a light burning when the black hole threatens is knowing my dw is there, and that Tinker will listen to whatever I have to say . (the Swedish Sour Cream Waffles I made last night weren't very good. Next time its Bisquick). Sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite.

Edit: forgot to say I did two six foot sections of fence today, and am pooped.

Maria, good morning...hope you slept well. And hope, because there weren't too many posts here during the time I was sleeping, that everyone else got a restful night's sleep as well.

I'll have to come back later and tell y'all how things are going here on my end. I'm still recovering from MG's 'passalong'.
