Morning Glories 2005 #25

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Everybody,
I just got home from Houston late last night from week-end,
so haven't read anything yet on posts.

Was just about to head out the door again to go back to Houston.
MY SON WAS JUST LIFEFLIGHTED TO HOSPITAL -
Motorcycle accident.
No helmet
Lucky going slow in residential neighborhood.

After learning he is alert and knows where he is, my family in Houston
has advised that I wait for those results because I am too hysterical to drive.

They are getting ready to do head scans.
Also has some broken bones.

Emma

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Oh my god, I will pray that he be ok. Your family is right, dont drive yet we dont want to loose you in an accident and neighter does your family.
All the best for you and your family.

Oh, Emma, this is terrible news. Thank God that he wasn't hurt even more seriously. Motorcycles scare me to death. I'm praying for his full and speedy recovery. May you have a safe trip back to Houston.

OMG Emma, Please know we will all be thinking about you. Keep us posted the best you can.
Take care, sending lots of good thoughts your way, Ronnie

My God, Emma, how terrible,
Best of wishes to you and your family. Thank God that all it is is broken bones. It'll be fine. Remember, we're here for you too.

Zem

Thank you everyone for thinking about me and your prayers -
They worked!

MY SON IS STILL ALIVE....
....and he is one lucky man [so far].

As it turns out, the good news is that he has many fractures of several bones in shoulder and collar bone.
The other good news is that Jim hit on the hardest part of his head.
Had he hit any other place on his head, the Neurologist said he would not still be here.
He does have a fractured scull and some bleeding in the head,
so we are still waiting to see what tomorrow brings.
I, of course, am headed to Houston to be there to help his pregnant wife take care of him when he goes home.

Thank you all again,
Emma

PS: Let this please be a reminder
that you NEVER know when you will see someone for the 'last' time.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Emma, what wonderful news!! Glad everything is working out so far. So true about the 'LAST' time. Been in them shoes.
Take Care, Ronnie

I spoke to Emma this AM, she was getting ready to go to Houston. Jimmy had a bad night, lots of pain, and a fever this AM. I told her I would post updates for her, I'll be talking to her or her hubby nightly. She really appreciates everyone's thoughts and prayers.

Whew, seems like pretty good news to me there :) Definately keep us updated.

In the world of MG, my ipomoea hederacea finally has a seedpod! At first look I thought a ChaChaMaru pod had lodged itself in the hederacea plant... the pod is so huge compared to the flowers and leaves. Does hederacea usually self polinate so sparingly?

zemerson - That is a very nice photo of an Ipomoea hederacea pod and I would like to suggest that you post that to the PlantFiles database...the curling sepals are very apparent and you can also see the two lower bracts below the sepals, which on Ipomoea hederacea curl (!) just like the sepals...by contrast the sepals of Ipomoea nil are sometimes slightly(!) curved, but rarely truely curly and the lower bracts very often are not as strongly structured and often fall off the plant shortly after fertilization...
The two lower bracts visible on this Ipomoea hederacea photo, are the same structures that become very enlarged in Calystegia species and completely cover the sepals and seedpod...These lower bracts are also a demarcation point on the pedicel, where fertilization, pigmentation and other noteworthy aspects of the plants functions can often be noted visually...take a look(!) and see for yourself...

The I.hederacea can be somewhat infertile and not produce many flowers by self-pollination,but this is not always the case...I have seen many strains that were very self-fertlie...it just depends on how the genes gets shuffled when they get pollinated and fertilized...you can wind up with some very self-infertile plants or some very self-fertile plants...

I like the pods, they are just so cool looking...they stand out so clearly and proclaim that the seeds inside are going to be very robust, healthy and very able to continue propagating the species...

That is a great photo to use to compare to the seedpods of "Minibar Rose"...anyone will be able to see that the seedpods of "Minibar Rose" clearly proclaim that they are Ipomoea hederacea and any Ipomoea nil that may be in there genetically has fallen into the background...The sepals are the most reliable(but not the only!) key to distinguish the identity of the plant species, especially useful for the most commonly grown MG's...
TTY,...

and the good news gets better :) looks great from here!

Anyway, my Heain no Umi bloomed again today with an odd, splotchy color pattern. More pink in real life than in the picture.

Thanks, it is about 3.5" across (6-7cm) and I do grow it inside. I worry that this vine'll take over my house if I don't prune it :)

Here is an eBay purchase from Cynda with a Mount Fuji name attached to it...it had semi spoked flowers, flowers with no spokes, and fully spoked flowers, all on 2 vines.

Janett and rylaff had asked for a picture of the container/trellis setup I have for my JMG...here it is, with a 2 day old flower of Akatsuki no umi. You can see the green circular trellis if you look closely.

Bravo, what kind of light is it recieving? South facing window?

Our townhouse on that side faces somewhat towards sunsets so it is more a westerly exposure. I augment the natural light with artificial lighting on a nearby bakers rack on which I grow my carnivorous plants, cuttings, streptocarpus and seedlings.

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the pic Gerris2, hmmm gonna try that in my L-room window it faces south. Have to make the bench bigger or build a temporary one

Can someone try to help luvsgrtdanes in here search for MG spiece in the id forum. Hers a link.

Here's another splotchy Umi flower. This one with patches of dark coloration around the secondary folds but not rays. It also seems that the floral tube is becoming crimped... You can see the pistils and stuff sticking out farther than they usually would.

zemerson - Excellent (!) pictures of the Ipomoea hederacea seedpod closeup...The best I've seen yet...I hope to see some of your superlative closeup photography in the PlantFiles database...

Calvert County, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks! I only just discovered the Digital-zoom feature on my camera (Olympus Camedia D-580 Zoom) and it's huge range of possibilities. I've been posting zillions of pictures to PlantFiles, (sorry about the delay recently... that might be me with 40 pics in my "pending" box) :).

LOL Zem, I am sure we are happy that you added those pictures! It's that time of year when we all should get busy and try to fill in those plant file photos :)

Calvert County, MD(Zone 7a)

Heain no Umi again. Are these blotchy colors caused by temperature fluctuations?
