It's a sickness, I tell ya!

Just when I thought I'd bitten off more than I can chew with the new garden we've been working on for two weeks ( http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/546379/ ), I made it worse. We had $200 worth of peat and topsoil brought in a couple of weeks ago, so that we could amend the soil in the new garden (we have awful gray clay, and some orange). I wasn't happy with the topsoil, as it was VERY sandy, so my husband complained about it and they brought out another load. Needless to say, we now have LOTS of soil. We've been using it in the new garden as well as all the rest of them, but we'll still have lots left over. It would be okay to have a mound of it back by the gardens, but I didn't want to pile it on the grass, or on our regular garden either, so I got this idea to dig up ANOTHER area where I can put my sunflowers and other colorful annuals, and we can pile the extra soil there for now. I do NOT need another flower bed! But it really will be neat. We had a good-sized pine tree die this summer, so my husband cut it off at about 4½ feet, and cut off the branches. I'm going to make signs that indicate how far different cities are from us and will point in their direction, and will paint them with bright colors and nail those to the tree trunk. As I was out there digging up the grass tonight, he gave me an order, "NO MORE FLOWER BEDS!" LOL.

So have any of you had a similar situation, where you just can't STOP with your gardening?

Oh, yeah!! Every year I say I am not going to add anything to the yard...........well, you know how that goes. And the longer I hang around on DG, the more I am adding!!!

I love your idea of putting the signs on the tree stump. That will be so cute.

It's not an original idea. Well, using the 'tree' that way is, but I saw the sign idea in an old gardening magazine that my mom had. I want to put names of towns that are significant to us on our signs.

I will start tiering UP, to get most space

do you want anything more to fill your beds?

I have lysmachia (yellow loose strife - can be invasive if you aren't careful about controlling it but great for spaces that need filling...)

I also have oregano (it makes a big, showy plant that spreads at the root and also seeds, this is the Greek kind that tastes so good in everything!)

and purple obedient plant... lots of purple obedient plant!

Let me know if you are interested, just send me a d-mail and an sasb and I'll stuff it with whatever strikes your fancy.

I love your sign, too - and the idea that it would contain info regarding people you care about makes me want to do one for our house.

Janiejoy, thanks so much for the offer, but I had such a great response to the other thread, both in the thread and via D-Mail, that I now have enough stuff for the garden. What I didn't plant this fall, I have seeds that I will plant next spring. I do want to leave a little bit of space so that I can add things when I see things I like or want. Since hubby says no more flower beds (and of course, we'll SEE about THAT! LOL), I don't want to totally fill it up yet until I see how it's going to be in the spring.

Thanks again!!

Hey - we had that idea first! The one about the little signs saying 'such-and-so 600 miles'. My DH built me a paving-stone path to my raised bed at the other end of theyard so the first sign is gonna say 'Carrie's Garden, 40 ft.'!

I think you've got the order right! I keep buying more plants than I have bedspace
for... Last year I went to this plant auction deal. Lots of nice shrubs and cute
perennials. I went with a friend. We each bid on stuff (it was a silent auction)
and ended up with way more than we intended! What a great idea the guy had -
we had to buy in lots such as "three witchhazels" or "12 gentianas" When all was
said and done, I had WAY more than I could plant. Its one reason I had to get
my new shrub border built this year - those shrubs were not going to survive
another year in pots.
