Growing from seed

Durham, NC(Zone 7b)

Here is another question for yall. If I grow from seed, do I need to grow them in containers first and then transplant to the garden? Or grow directly in the garden? If I grow in containers, I could conceivably grow during winter, right? Any suggestions?
Thanks again--Michelle

Just what is it you are growing from seed?

Hi Michelle,
I have never grown from seed, so I am hesitant to answer your question, but here goes.

I recently learned about winter sowing seeds. It looks like a great way to do it and requires no grow lights or special equipment because you do it outside. The germination rates look good for those who do it. I am giving it a try this winter. I figure if it is as easy as 'they' say, it is a good choice for a newbie like me. I am making a list of seeds right now and I am anxious for January when I can give it a go. There is a forum about it on another site, and those folks talk about giving away hundreds of plants because it is so successful. Wouldn't that be nice? My yard is so naked, I wouldn't need to give anything away!

http://www.wintersown.org/wseo1/FAQs.html here are some FAQ from a website about it and I also have a link to a list of plants that do well in our area with this method. I will find that for you if you are interested. It may also be on this link above as she wrote it for GardenWeb.

You can also do a search here at DG for "winter sowing" and get some great info. Good luck!

michelle - speaking from a new york state gardener, i al;ways start my seeds indoors under light and heat. i waint until june 1st to put my plants outside, i start my tomatoes 6 to 8 weeks before that date and my eggplants and peppers about 12 weeks before that date. i start the seeds in an old candy box than transfer them to 2 inch containers. they end up in 4 inch pots before they go into the garden. hope this helps a little.

I don't know yet what seeds I will have, does that matter? Will some things not work?

if you are talking about winter sowing outdoors i can't help you as i have never done it. if you are talking about starting seeds indoors under lights then the answer is yes. you can start just about anything that way.

Hi Michelle,

It looks like we are the same zone and I've done seeds, both indoors, outdoors, and winter sowing. If you let me know what you sowing, maybe I can help you. I'm certainly not an expert but have a done a little of each successfully. It just depends on what I'm sowing as to where/when I sow it. Clear as mud??? LOL
