NoH20 - what is that beauty in your post above? Still checking in here and waiting our Begonia forum - Dave???

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I see there is a lot of interest in a begonia forum, and I'm sure Dave does, too.

However, I think a lot of Dave's attention will be focused on the server transition this week. Let's give him a chance to get the system stabilized (I think Oct. 11 is "d-day" - there may be some downtime during the transition and some "bugs" to work out after that.)

rcn48, I don't know the name of my rex begonias. I got them at Lowe's in the house plant section this spring. They were small and under $3 each. I got 4 of them. One looks like 'Escargot' although I am not sure if it is. I would love to find a site with pictures that would help me identify them.

Here are two of them:

The other two - the one that looks like 'Escargot' is on the left. These pictures were take on July 4 so the plants are much bigger now.

NoH20, lucky you! Our local Lowes carries mostly Exotic Angel plants and I checked their website but can't see any that look like yours. Terry has listed all the Begonia sources here http://davesgarden.com/gwd/advanced.php?category=136 and when you have the time you might check out some of theirs. Also, this site sells wholesale and has quite a selection http://rexbegonias.com/BEGONIAS.htm. I have been adding to my collection over the summer and hoping to get some photos posted soon. Just bought 'River Nile' this weekend - it's a beauty!

Terry, sorry, how inconsiderate of me, I totally forgot about switching servers and now realize that Dave has more important matters at hand. We'll just be patient until all the "bugs" are worked out.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Oooops! Now I am wondering if it was Home Depot instead of Lowe's. I hope I didn't send you on a wild goose chase.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I just got the cutest begonia the other day. It has raised, red poka dots. And a very red reverse. Smaller leaves than some similar to this one. Very colorful!!

I am quietly watching this thread - I did not know there were so many closet Begonia lovers out there! Logee's has a wonderful assortment of Begonias - many more that are not listed in their catalog. Here is one of my new ones that I bought this Spring called Miami Storm...

My best advice for rooting Begonias is damp peat moss... It takes awhile, but I have fairly good success with it. It does not seem to matter if I use hormone or not... Some take a few weeks before they sprout new leaves. Hope this helps!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Julie, what a beauty! I'm still waiting for our new Forum so I can take pictures of my recently purchased (unnamed) Rexes to hopefully identify. Also waiting for my new purchases from Logees to arrive this week. Julie, are you close enough to Logees to visit in person?

pssst.....y'all know Logees is in PlantScout now, right?

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

I make a couple of trips a year - it is an amazing place. It is a real treat to see what is in bloom & just INHALE. You must remember that us zone 6 folks do not see such tropical beauties in our normal day to day travels! In the greenhouses, they have about 70 Begonia varieties. That is also how I was introduced to Brugs too. They have little placards with interesting information about the plants, so you have some background & basic care tips. They have full sized plants that are growing in the greenhouse floor - Brugs that are 20 feet in height! The first time I went I was awestruck. And here is my little Species Brug, just at 5 feet tall. The staff will go to great lengths to find something for you, or look up info in their computer system.

Ok, for all you Begonia lovers, took some photos last night after getting ready to bring mine in for the winter - they looked so nice I decided to leave them out a little longer (possible frost next week).

Wowzers! What a beautiful collection. Do you have them all in clay pots or in plastic pots set in clay pots?

I'm all for a begonia forum! Pretty Please!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Thanks everyone. I'm pretty pleased with how they all did this summer. I've got more pics to post but kind of hoping that one morning I'll see 115 forums instead of 114 on my home page and then I can share them with everyone to celebrate!

NoH20, there's a combination - some are actually planted in clay pots and some are still in their plastic pots and set into the clay to hang them. We picked up these nifty hangers a few years back and they will only 'hang' the clay pots.

Terry, thanks for the info on Logees being in PlantScout - now I'm in trouble - makes it even easier to order!

JRush, I'm planning a visit up north in a couple of weeks and am going to try to get to Logees if my daughter will tag along with me. Planning to make a day of it and take in as much as we can and Logees is at the top of the list! I've also asked her to go along so she can slap me when I
"lose control" :)

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Just beautiful rcn.....you can tell they have had great care.

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

With your penchant for Begonias, you will surely be bowled over by Logee's! They have an entire row along one side of one of the greenhouses with just Begonias. It is amazing how many forms this plant comes in. They also have full size specimens, which are incredible. Don't worry - they provide flats so you can carry all the plants you pick up. It is impossible to leave there without getting starry-eyed. Don't forget to check out the Solar & the herb greenhouses! I go to Logee's with another DG'er, & now she too is hooked. Give yourself some time to browse - I have spent an easy 4 hours just wandering around the greenhouses. Funny, but I am going to VA in another week. (Bluemont)
Enjoy your trip!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

JRush, thanks for the info. I'll have to plan to leave early in the morning because I'll be traveling from Portland, Maine down to Mass to check out Avant Gardens and then over to Logees. Looks like it will be a long day!

Received my new 'babies' from Logees yesterday! China Curl, Connie Boswell, Fireworks, Miami Mist and Raspberry Swirl, so I'll be busy this weekend potting them up and will have more pictures to share :)

Oh no! Oh no!
I think I'm getting hooked again.
I got 2 begonias this spring from Logee's and they are doing well.
After seeing your's I want more.

Keep posting here until we get the forum.I need as much info as I can get.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

downscale_babe, which two did you get? I'll post a list of all those I've received this year as well as others in my collection later - lots to do today to get ready for garden visitors tomorrow morning.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

All this begonia talk has me going again. I just got a neat one that will grow to 8 feet tall.

I was on a shopping round up, LOL! Jerodsmom, Calif-Sue and Pekasky and myself did a day of nursery hopping Thursday.

I got b.maculata var.Wightii (Polka Dot) and My Special Angel.I started with these because I knew I could grow the bat wing or angle wings.I really want to try the Rexes because I have never been able to keep them alive before. It has been a long time since I had one so I want to try again.

I would like to order one of each of the Begonias in the Logee cat.but I'm sure everyone else would too.

My Rex begonias die back every year them come back up in the spring. I am not sure if they rest inside too, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Anyone know the name of this begonia? The leaves are fairly large, they feel like velvet and the colors are so dark, top and bottom.

Kell,

I just happen to own that one also. It is B. Ramirez. I went to a Begonia Show last year and this begonia in all it's splendor had been given a ribbon. It was beautiful. When I asked someone at the show about it, they said it shows nicely when there are 2 plants in the same pot....so of course I had to buy 2 plants, but they were only in 4" pots.

Hey Dave, any more thoughts on our own forum yet? We are using this thread as our own Begonia Forum...lol
I have a lot of my Begonia's I want to post pictures of, but don't want to waste them here in the wrong place. :-)

Donna

That was so quick. THANKS Donna!! It is sure a dramatic one.

It's great to return from Maui to see so much support for a begonia forum. I was lucky enough to visit three botanical gardens while on Maui and will try and post some photos later. Still trying to unpack...
Did see a very tall b. luxurians and several other large rhizo and canes. Not entirely sure of their i.d. yet, but will post and see if anyone can assist.

that b. Ramirez looks a lot like my b. sharffiana? I've seen it spelled differently too.
