What's with the lowercase "i" when referring to oneself? I see it more and more all the time and it really hurts my eyes.
And what exactly does *xyz* mean? Are asterisks used in lieu of quotation marks now or is it something new altogether?
Just thought I'd ask.
Growing Trends
i believe the stars ** are used to emphasize a word, in place of italics. as for the i instead of I, well, being the shy, wallflower-type person that i am and with low self-esteem on top of it, i must say that i'm just crushed. perhaps excedrin headache would ease the pain?
hootin and hollerin and gist playing with yer head! LOL debi
Ulrich, guten abend. I recently used the lower case i to refer to myself. Never did that before, ever. But in this case I wanted to put the accent on myself and didn't know how to do that because "I" was already capitalized. I thought lower-casing it might emphasize it. I didn't like doing it, but thought I'd give it a try.
Yoh nap, somewhere here in DG is an explanation of how to do italics, bold, etc.
Found it in FAQ, tried it just now, didn't work. What's html anyway?
Edited to remove superfluous post. :)

html is *hot momma love*, or *HyperText Markup Language*. Take your pick.
If the "left caret, letter, right caret" then the words, and then "left caret, slash, letter, right caret" didn't work, then you done did something wrong. Now ain't that a lot clearer? LOL
did i do this right? well, almost. i was trying for the word "do"

now the whole thing is in italics. rats.
You can do it Debi! Just copy this but take out the spaces inside there
< i > I can do it < /i >
well, i had my darn notepaper upside down LOL. thanks for the vote of confidence. debi
okay, how's this?
boldly now, how's this?

nap, you *so* have it!!! ( i'm making Ulrich crazy with small i's and stars). debi
Now that we have that straightened out...
Someone, maybe Horseshoe, put a musical note at the end of their post. Now that one is a real puzzle to me!
Welllllll, jes blow me over with a lil ol' feather, now wonchee !!

-Magpye
Oops .. wait .. I reckon a lil ol smilee face orta be included .. ;- .. Heck I guess I'll find one a layin' about 'round here 'ventchuly !
Whoops - I found one !! ..
Hey Ulch .. Ye gots mail !!
always wondered what HTML was.
magpye, i'm sorry but i just have to ask, what does wonchee and ,pdy mean? i made the effort to read this post and i truly don't understand why you have to make it this hard to read. debi
'wonchee' is most likely 'won't you' and 'pdy' is probably supposed to be 'purdee', right Maggie?
Buy ze vay, eyem shtill vatink for dee mehl. Promissis promissis, yah?
butterqueen, how in the world did you get the formula with the carets to show up here instead of "I can do it" being in italics?
i think butterqueen explained it very clearly in her post as to just how she did it. tsk, tsk, ulrich
You have to put a space before and after the i and /i inside the greater than/less than symbols for it to show up without converting itself.
I don't know the proper names for those symbols, but I always thought a caret was this one ^. Is the term all inclusive?
Rachel
car·et
noun
A proofreading symbol (^) used to indicate where something is to be inserted in a line of printed or written matter.

oh, this is rich, you mean Ulrich didn't know what a caret was? what a fun and informative thread you've started. i guess i will be forgiven for calling asterisks "little stars"! ROFLOL debi
They are little stars also!!! lol
Could someone point me toward the registration desk? I seem to have stumbled upon a Smart Aleck Convention and my dh says I belong here. Take me to your leader...LMBO
Rachel
my dad had two names for me, one i can't print here even tho it wasn't that bad and the other one was smart aleck. your post brought it right back! i don't know why i had forgotten that term. yeah, you got me. debi
lol Debi, I don't use aleck much myself, but it was 'legal'. Dh actually calls me a smart something else, but I remind him it is better than being a dumb...uh...aleck!
**** huh, little stars!
On my keyboard it has six points. But I think it prints out with five, like a star!
uh nap, i see you're getting bold again. lol debi
Wow, Ulrich, it is interesting that they didn't show an example isn't it? Difficult for the shift+ impaired like my friend Debi, but you would think Webster could get it right! (I really need a smiley here)
let's recap:
^ - caret
* - little star
***** - teeny little people holding hands
* = asterisk (think botany: aster = star or rays ;o)
I love learning new tricks on the computer. Does this work everywhere, or just in Dave's Garden. Like would I use that in email too? Or is that a really stupid question and I should keep my mouth shut?
And did you see the musical note I was talking about? It's over in the Magpye thread, I think.
o stop it, i'm wetting my I_I I_I those don't really look like pants do they? ('o')
maybe really big grandma pants
oh nap, i ain't goin there.

Can you people believe what a smart aleck Rachel turned out to be? She's such a meek and mild sweetie in the rose forum.
So what's the real name of those non-carets?
"less than" and "greater than"... or ""
I use * for a degree mark as in "it was 87* here in Iowa today, in OCTOBER!!!"
or it could be a squished bug I guess, lol
mg
Oh come on...just for a second.
this is like being in high school only i'm actually learning something.LOL debi
***** teeny little people holding hands
I luv it!
Love it, I tell ya! Luuuuv ♫ it! ♫
Good idea, mg! I've always just written ou the word "degrees", but that's much better.
