Planting Bulbs

Randolph, MA(Zone 5a)

I need help planting my bulbs now for the Spring - last year I lost $120 worth of bulbs - the squirrels and gophers had dinner on me for days - This year I'm reluctant to plant them but I couldn't resist buying the tulips - I have $200 worth of bulbs still don't know what to do with the squirrels - please help.

In a recent prior thread someone posted re plain steel wool placed over each bulb. See that thread.

I planted a few daffodil bulblets in them. The squirrels stayed away. Another thread showed people planting the bulbs about 6 inches deep and then laying down 1" hardware cloth at about 2 inches deep. I have tried both of these methods and they have worked.

I had great success last year with a green mesh, the sort you might use to build a compost heap with, I hope that makes sense. I bought it at Home Depot. Anyway, I planted the bulbs, then placed the mesh over the bulbs, cutting holes to allow the larger bulbs to grow through. The smaller bulbs, I reasoned, would not need such help, and that proved true. Then I covered the mesh with a layer of dirt and mulch. In the spring: success! Don't think I lost any to the critters.

Rose, I dug out a full 4' x 8' bed for my mother's tulips to a depth of around 8 inches. Lined the bottom and sides with 1/4 inch hardware cloth, added some of the soil back in, planted the bulbs, and then covered almost to the top. Used flexible wire at the junctions "sewing" the hardware cloth together (she had LOTS of moles and voles). Put a layer of 1/2" hardware cloth over the top and then filled in the rest of the dirt.

Lots of work, but nothing could get in to eat the bulbs!
