Need ideas for a "fire" theme garden...

I want to make a fire themed garden and need some ideas of what plants would be good in it. Plants with "Fire" in the name are what I'm looking for, particularly ones that are related to fire departments and firefighting. Examples are 'Volunteer Fireman' iris, maltese cross, any of the plants named 'Fire Chief', etc. Can you throw some more ideas at me that I might not have thought of?
Thanks so much!

There are several dayilies with fire in the name. You could do a search. Two I know off hand are Hearts Afire and Aztec Fire.

There are some nice Crocosmias that have names like 'Amberglow,' 'Bressingham Blaze,' 'Emberglow,' 'Firebrand,' 'Fire King,' 'Flamethrower'... I have several unnamed cultivars and the flowers really do look like little flames. I know Brent and Becky's bulbs usually carries them in their Spring/Summer catalogs.

And the kniphofia... looks like a flame with that red & yellow. torch...

What about hot names? Like Red Hot poker?

mg

Oriental Poppy 'Bonfire' just came to mind...

I love my "Firecracker" plant. tt

Thanks so much! I had done a search for 'fire', but never thought of 'blaze', 'flame' or 'hot'. I knew I'd get some great ideas from all of you!

If you are also looking for plants that remind you of fire, and aren't necessarily named with fire in mind, how about celosia plumosa? If you pinch it back when it's growing, it bushes out and has all kinds of neat bloom spikes flaming up from the plant.

This Celosia plumosa 'Fresh Look Red' is firey!

also consider the colors. Deep red, to red to yellow, tall at center, like a flame.

Here is a flaming coleus that I will be happy to send you cuttings of http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1677028
Sidney

Many more great ideas, folks! I was so hyper-focused on the word 'fire' that I didn't think of plants that are colored like fire or look like it. I've got a red hot poker, so there's a place to start. My poor hubby...he gets a reprieve until I get the first plant to start a bed, then the work really begins. He's got a big job in store and doesn't even know it yet! LOL

I'd love to have the coleus cuttings, Sidney! How beautiful! I think I've found my next obsession! The colors of the different varieties are AMAZING! Are they easy to root? What do I need to send you? You can dmail me with the information if you'd like.
Thank you so much!

Gardenwife, there are some Celosias with "fire" in the name: Bombay Fire and Chief Fire (there may be more.)

There are several tulips with the red/yellow flame look. Those would be perfect for some early spring color in your garden area.

Will you have some garden art in the area that goes with the theme? Here are a couple I found with a quick search to give ideas.

Cute little boy fireman:

my dogs would love this one, hehe

And speaking of dogs, a Dalmatian statue would be adorable too!

Good luck, this is an interesting idea and I look forward to seeing pictures of it.

Celosia plumosa was the first thing that came to mind here too. I didn't plant much this year but have one that came back from seed which has red foliage.

When searching for names related to fire, also include the German version - feuer I have an Achillea with that as part of the name - red and yellow - http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/78439/index.html

Some of those terra cotta million bells petunias might look like embers at the base of everything else.
