How do I prepare my (still happily blooming) fushia (sp?) for winter? I'm in coastal Alaska, my plant is currently in my greenhouse but it is getting cooler and will soon freeze. I can't keep heat in the greenhouse much longer and the sunlight hours are getting short fast. Suggestions?
Wintering fuchsia
Bring them into a cool room in the house, they prefer a temperature around 50F with moist compost but not wet or standing in water. Keep the plants you want to keep in the sun for as long as you can before the frost hits even if you have to bring them in at night, this ripens the bark which copes better than the green stems overwinter.
They may lose all their leaves depending on the conditions but this isn't necessarily a sign that they are dying. If they do this allow the compost to dry a little but don't let it dry out.
As added security, Fuchsia cuttings root well and will overwinter quite well in the same conditions as the mature plant, sometimes a little better.
Watch out for whiteflies, the scourge of the mid-winter fuchsia. The warmer the window, the lustier the whiteflies.
We discovered this the hard way last year.
