My New Orleans Terrace

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

I finally ripped out everything in this one area and turned it into a New Orleans style terrace with planters and shelves and wall decor. It is not finished. I intend to fill it with edibles--any plants that could be eaten as well as herbs and mints. But since I don't have those plants, I've temporarily filled the garden with cacti and succulents.

Here's an overall view of this small terrace garden.

Y'all may remember I found the most perfect chairs for the N.O. terrace. One is male and one is female (with earrings, no less). They make perfect plant stands.

why is it called the N.O. terrace? is it because of all the ironworks? very pretty and I love those chairs, pretty whimsical

And here's a view of the fountain I was so proud of. It's lost its luster. As I was hanging it, the brackets on the back fell out and I couldn't put them back in. The screwholes were stripped. I finally got it on the wall and found that the pump didn't work. So I got a new pump and hooked it up. The lion is supposed to spit the water. But there's some clog somewhere and the water never comes out of the lion's mouth. Since I bought the fountain "as is", I can't take it back. Bummer! But it's pretty, huh?

Yes, I call it a New Orleans terrace because of all the ironwork and the lion fountain and the general aged look of the decor. I patterned this garden after a garden I saw in TN between two commercial buildings. The whole thing just looked so French or New Orleans to me. And I decided I definitely had to do something like that eventually. And I've never been happy with this area. Everything I've planted here ended up being too big and hiding the walkway by midsummer. I intend to keep a lot of plants in pots in this area and try to keep it nice and neat. This is one of the most used doors in my house, so we need the pathway clear.

My brother walked thru the terrace last night and said it was the most beautiful walk he'd even experienced thru this area of my yard. He gets upset if something touches him. "It touched me!" he'll say. LOL Now everything is planted away from the path so nothing touches him.

Great job BC! You really did a fantastic job and with very little help when you could have really used all the help that was due you.

To think you did it when you were in so much pain from the kidney stones, too!

It's a testament to your ability to accomplish and endure pain to get the job done in time for your Garden Party. Congratulations!

You're right on with the NOLA influence...the pretty stone walk, the wrought iron and the wall decor are wonderful...

Looks sharp to me, sure wish the lion would work right for you!
