Pairing for Spanish Bluebells

Newark, DE

This is my first post so it is kind of scary.
In a moment of weakness, or excitement, I ordered 1000 Spanish Bluebell bulbs. I would like to pair them with a deer resistant, later blooming perrenial that will somewhat hide the foilage when it dries out. I am in Zone 6 with dappled sunlight beneath large white pines. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to DG! Friendly folks here.

Sorry I have no suggestions except maybe hostas. Don't know if deer like them or not.

Deer tend to nibble hostas around here, but ferns would be nice. There are some great cultivars of Japanese painted fern that would give you some color. You're going to love all those Spanich bluebells; it would be great to see a pic when they're in bloom. You may want to try posting this question in the bulbs forum; lots of people discussing similar plans over there. Welcome to DG! Neal.

Deer also like the Hostas where I am. The biggest problem with deer is in the winter months when they have much less food available in the woods and are some what desperate to eat my evergreen plants like azaleas, yews, mountain laurel, and acuba. Hostas and some ferns would work in my Bluebell site. I was just trying to come up with something a little different. I have some hay-scented fern and hosta that would be easy to divide. I may do that if I can't come up with something unique. I do appreciate the suggestions.

kbeachy46...welcome to DG. You will find out lots of good information here...

I planted Actea Narcissus (a late bloomer) with my spanish bluebells last year...they are supposed to come up together...) but I don't know of a perennial to cover the greens after bloom...maybe columbines?....

Mine are planted under and near deciduous shrubs, so as they come out they distract as the bluebells die out...

You might check out the 'shade' forum too. There are lots of people looking for cover for under pines 'n such...

Good luck with planting the 1000 bluebells...It will look lovely!
