Didn't know how spoiled we are!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Until I joined a motorcycle forum. You can't post pics on it from your pc. They have to be from a public website. What a pain!

It also does not take your watched threads up to to the top when a new post is entered. Instead it sends you an email. BLAH!!! I get enough e-mail as it is at work!

Thanks Dave! This is the very first site I've ever joined with forums. I thought they were all this easy!

DG makes it ALL easy, doesn't it? it never ceases to amaze me that Dave can not only run this ship smoothly, but that he can keep all of his "crew" ,and we are an unruly bunch, in line! LOL debi

Irving (Dallas area), TX(Zone 8a)

Personally I think Dave's "watching" system is brilliant. I haven't seen one this good anywhere else (and I've posted on quite a few forums). The image hosting is understandable (and not so bad once you get used to it), noting that bandwidth can be hard to come by. But sending emails thing on other forums is far inferior.

if dave reads this, he won't be able to fit his "bleeding wig" on his head! LOL debi

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Yep!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Aww, I think his natural "wig" will still fit, but the kind words are always welcome! My guess is that he stays attuned to industry trends, and keeps DG one-step-ahead whenever possible ;o)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Whenever I stumble across a new forum that I find myself at more than a couple of times- I grump and grumble about it. Nothing is as good as DG, for sure!!

Then, if I spend much time at a new-found place, I always try to figure out a way to see if Dave could talk them into hiring him for a contract position just long enough to re-do their forums for my viewing pleasure :) It did happen once, but that was 3 years ago :) I'm spoiled indeed!

BTW- a nice word is always music to his ears :)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Ha ha! That's EXACTLY what I was thinking Trish! I was trying to figure out a nice way to direct them to Dave - couldn't think of one since I've only been on their site 3 days! LOL!!

Nicole

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

of course, Dave doesn't have time to do those sorts of things now anyway.
We keep him hopping on DG :)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I DO hope he's busy hopping doing paying things with his programming talent!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, at one point a decision had to be made. Either Dave would have to work full time outside of DG and DG would be largely ignored (and probably run down and out), or we would just go for it. There wasn't time to do contract work (or otherwise full-time employment) and do DG both.

We made the decision to keep DG and try to grow it enough to support our family. That's when ads were put up, Plant Scout was being conceived....etc. A labor of love for many years turned into a salary. Although nothing like what Dave would make were he working for Google, or some other company that would love his talent (sorry, I'm a little biased), but enough. Plus, an added benefit of having him home all of the time :)

He's turned down several offers that would easily double his salary, but it would mean throwing DG away.

So, if ever one starts to think about, and get discouraged with DG looking "too business" or "not like it used to be", or "too big"....just remember that those are the very things that allow DG to exist.

And what would we do without DG????? :)

Trish

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Great reply, Trish!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Well I like the ads! I 'watch' them on my signon. I know you won't promote unscrupulous vendors and they give me ideas.

Dave needs to teach someone how to run DG so that it won't die if he has to leave; it should only take a few years to learn the ropes. :D But who can do it? OH, I know! Terry... ;)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Actually, Paul......

How old are you now?? A couple more years......

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

hehehe, yeah - I second Trish's nomination. (Administrative stuff, I can do. Programming? You might as well spend your efforts teaching a pig to sing - you at least have a glimmer of hope in succeeding with the pig.)

Irving (Dallas area), TX(Zone 8a)

Uhhh, maybe after I've finished college. I'll get back to you on that in about 6 or 7 years, heh heh. :)

*In my best cheerleader voice* PAUL! Paul! He's our man...if DAVE can't do it...... PAUL can!!! YAH.....

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Dave, Terry, Trish.

I love being spoiled.

Any news on a Rita Forum, or consolidating Rita and Katrina into a Disaster Forum?

mg

Paul, I never went to college. Somehow I managed. :-)

No news on the Rita forum. If a forum is warranted, we'll do it, but we haven't gotten to that point yet. The wind only just started blowing.

Dave

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Bad Dave! Don't encourage him. Remember his mom is a member here too, and if you don't watch it she will give you stern talking to. ;-) You've got plenty of time for him to go to college, before taking over duties.

:-)

Just found this and had to add my two cents worth. I've tried joining many forums, but gave up because they were so taxing with my speech. Thank you Dave for such a great site. I've met many wonderful people here at DG, and have learned a lot too. Was just out there doing a google search for info one day and stumbled onto DG. Sort of lurked around before I joined to see how things would work. Thanks, again, for such a user friendly site. ... Elaine

Paul's lurking mom comes out of the shadows on this one! I must say there's not a way in the world I'd ever worry about Dave's influence!!! I hope whatever's in Paul's future will equip him to serve others -- which brings me back to the subject of this thread. The outstanding features of this website and forum are the result of the combination of genius and a servant's heart.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

if we do end up having to have a Rita Forum, please don't consolidate it with Katrina. my 2 cents. Dave will know the right thing to do. debi

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Nice to hear from you Luv2Weed. :) I think you are right about that one... Paul is one lucky kid to have Dave as a mentor/promoter of sorts in his pursuance of technologies passion.

Now Paul's going to hate me for calling him a kid...

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Dave, if you are in the market for another protégé, may I introduce you to my son Nathan? He is 14 and the reason I now have a boot password installed on my computer. That now makes 4 levels of passwords before the internet can be accessed.

I'll be looking into a fingerprint scanner next, lol.

I'm a big boy. *sticks lower lip out*

*smile*

Luv2Weed, thank you for the kind words. I'm tempted to say something humble but I won't. :-)

Dave, I second Luv2weed's comments "combination of genius and a servant's heart". I've only been a member for a year and I can't say enough about this website. Only bad thing about it - my early mornings are consumed keeping up to date with the forums.

I have finally used your media information and put together a poster to display at the plant sales we attend to encourage other gardeners to check it out - here's a photo of what I threw together at the last minute before last weekend's show - hopefully I'll be able to spend more time on it for next spring's sales to make it a little 'flashier' :)

Sorry, I didn't have enough room! Next time I'll add more info :)

Real nice, rcn48!!!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Dave :) I really was in a hurry when I threw this together - doesn't do justice to all that DG offers - but I do plan to work on it over the winter to get it ready for our shows next spring. I was just anxious to get the spread the word about DG.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Wow! I like that...would it be okay if I print it out, laminate it, and display it at my Farmer's Mkt, rcn48 and Dave?

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Horseshoe, no problem here, if you need a larger size I can email you one if you like. I printed it out on 8.5 x 11 paper but I think I saved it for DG in a smaller version to download since I'm on dialup and it takes forever!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I know this is off the subject, but Terry brought it up. She said you might as well try to teach a pig to sing. The way I heard it is..."don't try to teach a pig to sing. It doesn't work, and it annoys the pig."

But seriously, I have NEVER spent more time on the internet than I have since I discovered this place. A friend gave me some mosquito plant and I didn't know anything about it. Dave's Garden sounded like I should give it a shot. I was immediately impressed and joined that day. Since then, I've been amazed to find out that it's so much more than gardening. I don't want to go to work, I don't want to sleep, I just want to hang out in Dave's Garden. Thank you, Dave and everyone else for this wonderful refuge.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

nap, "ditto" :)

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

I don't know what I would do without Dave's Garden. I have a true extended family here as well as a complete encyclopedia of information mostly based on experience on nearly any topic. GOD bless and keep Dave and the entire administrative staff.
