Caterpillars on Camellias

Savannah, GA

I noticed a large number of caterpillars on one of my camellias last week. I have never seen this one before. They are only on one plant. Does anyone recognize what kind it may be?

camilliagirl - This is a Tussok moth caterpillar (family Lymantriidae). I believe that yours might be a white banded Tussok moth (genus Orgyia) or something similar.

Night_Bloom, Thanks for the info. I had a different caterpillar on another camellia a few weeks ago. Do you recognize this caterpillar?

camelliagirl - I didn't have time to look up your caterpillar today., but I'll look it up soon.

camelliagril - I'm pretty sure that your caterpillar is a red-humped caterpillar (family Notodontidae, Schizura concinna).

You can go here to read a little bit on it and see a picture to confirm... http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/2000/cateast/schiconc.htm
