deformed cimicifuga blooms

Schaumburg, IL(Zone 5a)

I have some cimicifuga racemosa that I have had for around six years. In light shade, they had only a few blooms. Last year, we cut down a nearby tree, and for the first season, they were growing in full sun. The difference in the number of blooms was amazing; they were beautiful. This year, with no transplanting or any apparent changes to their conditions, they have bloomed, but the flowers are not straight up and down like candlesticks, but deformed; they are curvy, like the letter S and more horizontal rather than vertical. Can anyone tell me what's going on with my plants??

Hi Mud, I'd guess the flowers are curving from inconsistent water. I have two big clumps of cimicifuga and this happens to the clump that's in a drier part of the garden. The other one is more shaded and where the soil stays nice and moist. The flowers always grow nice and strait on that plant.

Poppysue, thanks for your reply. I had a suspicion that water might be the problem; I'll have to pay more attention to the cimicifugas at bloom time; I have a tendency to not water long enough for the larger established plants, especially if the foliage is not withering in any way. I had heard from my Dad that if cucumbers were not watered consistently, they would grow curved rather than straight. (I have that problem too!) By the way, are you by any chance the Poppysue that had a website at msn with beautiful pictures posted of your garden as well as pictures of mosaic projects?? I had gone to Poppysue's garden at msn back in early spring, but for some reason, cannot find it anymore. I'm interested in getting into mosaic work, and enjoyed the pics and info.

That was me Mud! I still have the mosaics on my homepage. Here's the link - http://communities.msn.com/PoppysuesGarden&naventryid=100 The mosaics are on the menu bar at the left. You'll have to let us know how your project comes out.
