Ron,
Those pink flowers are from the same vine, right next to eachother. I have an entire vine that is doing that, and bagged some up last night for hand pollination today. I am taking a break from outside right now, it is just so hot today, and I definately have bronchitis :(

I just DMailed you Ron.....

Emma - This one
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1748106
is probably the Chiaki,(by the type of blue that it is showing) and that is darkening somewhat at the throat...as compared to this picture
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1749386
which does not show the 'discoloration...
This picture of Josephs darker blue characteristic of the Mai Sugata which was also showing some color 'variegation' in the bloom
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1707395
Then Joseph had posted later on that the bloom color had settled in,and become more uniform,as pictured here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1726008

So,to answer your question"Is it normal" for these type blooms to display that color 'variegation;I would say it is not too uncommon, and actually I happen to like the color being somewhat 'variegated',even though the 'correct' color should be more solid like the later blooms that Joseph's plant(s) produced...

Ok, here are some blooms today.

I'm geting bronchitis, not pneumonia as stated in another thread, it does happen to me every year, and sometimes it does turn into pneumonia, but lets all keep our fingers crossed. :)

Ok, blooms :) Here is my blue star JMG

My absolute favorite today..... Emma, this bloom is marked already LOL

First glance, it was just a regular purple purpurea, but look closer.... its got markings in it, like a flaked, but the main color is the purple. Strange isn't it?

Janis,
lol - good girl!
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1752473
This is a True Beauty. Love the colors.

Here is first bloom -
seeds are FROM FRANCE.
Seed packet is labeled
'Franchi Sementi' [DAL 1783] Ipomoea multicolor,
which of course is I. purpurea.
Not a great photo. I'll have more blooms of this one later.
Also, from the same packet is an AWESOME Pink that you will be interested in Janis.
I'll post it on the new Thread.
Boy, or we going through the Threads.
So many gorgeous MG's.

ROFL guess you didn't forget!

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Gourd - Nice(!) shot of the Ipomoea muelleri seedpods(!)...You are right, you are getting better with the closeups...Now(!?),if you could get a closeup(!) sideview of the I.magnusiana and the I.muelleri clearly showing the sepals at the base of the flowers...
The mystery plant leaves 'ID' that you posted is not coming to me automatically...although I do get the impression that it is a perennial and produces a caudex...Send me the list of what you should have growing and I'll see what I can do...
I would bet that the small blue one from China is an Ipomoea hederacea...closeup of the sepals please for positive confirmation...
It's good to have a photo posted of plant leaves,if there are no flowers and I don't know anybody who has gotten blooms from that species from Ethiopia yet...it may need to mature and I suspect that it probably is a perennial...

Janis - The pictures of the pink ones with the white throats don't seem to have as large a white area as the one that you had posted previously...maybe it varies considerably...they still look nice...
The 1st flaked one that looks like it is reverting,I think is just showing more color...the 2nd one that you posted of the 'almost regular' purp is definitely carrying the flaked gene, but is showing alot(!) more color than usual...put a few of those aside for me...

I'm off to the next thread...

New York, NY(Zone 7a)

Comment on this thread: those pinks with the white extending out of the throat have a very pretty pinwheel symmetry. Usually the creases in (e.g.) a five-sided morning glory flower are nearly mirror planes -- that is, the flower has the symmetry of a five-sided cone. The white swirl pattern breaks the symmetry at the creases and gives the flower a clockwise or counterclockwise twist.

If the flower were a molecule, the technical terms would be C5v and C5. I'll trade anyone for the correct botanical term for what I've been calling "creases" in the flower!
