Gail,
Yes, they are truly 'Heavenly'.
The next door neighbors dog got to mine this year.

Laurrie,
They are BOTH beauties.
Just look at your 'Heian no Haru' shimmer.
I like that.

Joseph - in response to
"is the change in the corolla pattern of Star of India is related to the age of the plant, or is it photoperiod effect, or is it temperature effect, or all of the above?"

All of the above will affect the physiological display of pigments and additionally in many cases affect gene expression...

TTY,

Janis, have you noticed if the feathered flowers have different shades of purple on different vines? When I grew them, I had one vine that was more blue purple, and the other was more red-purple. Also, I'd love some of your pink and purple Shibori seeds...those are so nice! I've got a couple of things in the hopper over here...

Several months ago, I won a seed pod of blue silk from Dee and I wanted to share what bloomed for the first time this morning. I only planted one of the 4 seeds for insurance in case something happened to this. It is now full of buds and hopefully, it will produced some seeds that I can share as Dee was generous enough to share with me. I have been wanting this one for so long and bought so many duds that I had almost given up. Thanks so much Dee.

Thanks so much Jan (budgielover) I am so happy to see the "Blue Silk" produced so well for you. The parent plant is gone, just toooo hot and dry this year, but I have replanted and hope I have time to get blooms and more seed..........
thanks again Jan.

Gail,
Love your 'Henka type' variation.
Great color combo

Emma - I see that your "Suigetsu" has a white looking throat...the onesI've grown have had a white throat...the one in the database has a distinctive yellow to the throat...Hmmm...

Hi Queeny(!)...

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Ron,
I'm guilty for not looking at all of the gorgeous photos in the Data Base, but will be doing that soon as I'm trying to look at all of the JMG's and understand their names and what they look like.
My "Suigetsu" seeds came From Japan this year.
I did not get mine from eBay, but this photo posted there is the EXACT packet as what I have.
Let me scan my packet so I can show you the back side.

Ok, here is front view of my seed packet of 'Suigetsu'.
Cat got these seeds for me from her Japanese friend.

Now, look at Laurrie's Seed packet of 'Seiryu'
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1735348

To me they look very similar,
however, Laurrie's photo seems a bit darker and a brighter blue
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1733797

than my 'Suigetsu'
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1735389

Which you can also tell by pulling up two screens and putting the seed packets side by side.
'Suigetsu' to me seems to be more of a 'Slate Blue' Color.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Emma the seed packet is not Seiryu, it is Seiun :)

Thanks Laurrie,
Confused enough here.

Emma - I had mentioned that the photo you posted of the bloom you got from your "Suigetsu" has a white throat...just like mine did...which both of ours in this case, does look like the picture on the packet...I have about 20 of those (empty) Suigetsu packets...I mentioned that the one Dee grew and posted to the database apparently has alot of visible yellow in the throat area...so,I was just wondering about that...I had noticed that there seems to be a noteworthy similarity(!) to the "Suigetsu" and the "Seiun" on the packet pictures and the degree of white to the throat may be a variable in both of them, although there seems to be more consistency to the "Seiun" as this point...I personally do not think that the "Seiryu" aka "Blue Dragon" looks like either "Suigetsu" or the "Seiun",not to my eyes anyway...

Breezy - I think it was a good idea to show how your very dilute from the Tie Dye bears a noteworthy similarity to the lighter "Seiryu" that Stacey posted, although the differences in the coloration to the throat area are still apparent...still,your comparison nicely illustates one of the main points about these JMG types that I have been trying to share and that is that very similar looking flowers can result from different named types...and exactly how much variance should be allowed for(?) in any particular named cultivar,if any official standards are promulgated...I am not against the idea of having an official set of references of some type, but where to set the initial boundaries of any first draft of any official standards is going to be difficult,in light of the many variants coming directly out of the packets from Japan and especially of any descendant generations...the fact that there are a significant number of variations that come directly out of the packs from Japan, shows, that just because a pack is directly from Japan, doesn't guarentee that you will get what the packet or description says you will....in point of fact(!)...since there are(!) so many variations coming from packs that are directly from Japan ,this could result in people honestly believing that 'whatever' they got out of a pack from Japan is definitely the 'True ' correct type,...just because it came directly from Japan...

I also agree that the main point should be to enjoy(!) the Morning Glories and not allow any official names to stand in the way of that enjoyment(!)...I happen to enjoy when I get something interesting and unexpected out of any packet...but, if the type is not very true to a pictured representation or description, then the companies offering the types would gain credibility if they would accurately portray the flowers the way they really look, and if a significant amount of variations are known to be present in a named type...then that aspect should also be made known to the purchaser and be stated by the seller...
Apparently the enjoyment of growing them does take actual precedence over any official nameing or we all wouldn't still be growing them...There are alot more dog and cat 'mutts' ,than there are purebreeds, and the 'mutts' haven't stopped people from loving their mixed breed dogs and cats...I doubt any confusion over the names will stop people from enjoying MG's...not knowing the officially corect names hasn't stopped people yet,and people have been growing MG's for many hunderds of years...I perceive no slacking off in any interest...even the confusion is sort of fun...

TTY'all,

Ron,
Very well stated about the JMG's FROM JAPAN.
I totally agree.
I do like the 'surprises' too.
