I am telling you,I don't remember Hatsu arashi eevr being this huge and ruffled,but every day they are getting bigger and better,with no signs of stopping.

Emma, we are going to have to trade seeds of Akathoukinoumi,as yours is much lighter than mine.I like yours better! Mine is too close to heavenly blue

Emma, I got my seeds from Parks. It was called

That's the only ones I bought this year, because I thought I would have seeds from last year. I did but not the ones I really wanted. I have Grandpa Ott's coming back really nicely. But the beautiful white vine that I had last year hasn't come back yet. However, that vine didn't really bloom until fall anyway. So maybe it is out there somewhere. LOL

Parks seeds have on their packages 'seed origin Japan',
so I assume they are JMG's.
It is a lovely bloom.

not a problem.
Now that my blooms are opening nicely now, I am going to take a piece of the petal off of my 'Akathukinoumi' and place it on the bloom of the 'Purple Shibori NOT' for pictures to compare the exact color difference. We need to find out a name for this one, or find out what it is.
Dee is catching up on the threads, so maybe she will have an idea by now, especially since she also got the same blooms.
I really do like your Hatsu Arashi. Blooms are much larger than mine were. I figure I'll be sending you some of everything I have, so just count on getting the 'Akathukinoumi'.
I just got in from putting baggies around the 'Gray Smoke' and my 'Dark Blue Henka Asagao Blue Type' blooms that will be opening in the morning.

golgi, your flowers are beautiful...

Emma, what kind of baggies are you putting on them? Paper baggies? I've been using coffee filters for the snail vine pods, but that isn't working to well.. gotta figure out how to keep them from popping.

Ron wrote some great information on this a few thread back that was very detailed. If you can't find it LMK and I'll track it down and give you the scoop on what all he said.

Gail, this looks like your Hatsu Arashi.
Mine is labeled Henka Asagao. What do you think? Which one do I have?

See what Gail says, buy yours looks to me like
'Akathuki no umi' [maybe spelled wrong]
Hatsu Arashi leaves are not variegated.

It is interesting to see the intra-vine diversity in flower form of Star of India; my SOI flowers are now showing little to no star as I had seen earlier in the summer.

it is almost impossible to identify,as it seems there are alot of blues in that color range.
compare sepal length,leave shape and coloration.
As Emma has said,Hatsu Arashi has no variegation on the leaves
oops,sorry...in the first link photo,Hatsu is on the left,then Akatsuki no Umi,and Berlin Blue.

the rain today destroyed most of mine, also wind brought down a tree and took out the phone lines, thanks goodness for cable internet. My yard swing took the brunt of the tree, but it could have been the house right? I'm not complaining, it could be so much worse.

Had some new plants bloom, but the rain and wind had really done a number on them before I got tto them, we had heavy rain winds of about 25 MPH and 3 inches of water in the basement. No power loss, so the sump pump kept the water under control

Emma, taken this afternoon, around 2 or 3, I guess. I think it is the temperature and the rain. I get some that look like that when the temps are down. VERY dreary here today, clouds and rain, maybe 70degrees humidity is up, but not oppressive. Its just plain yucky, in a word.

Joseph - seems the more you grow these out ,the more your observances are alighning with my perspective...

Gail and nut4spuds - I agree with Gail that the sepals are the samer as the Akatsuki no Umi - Next lesson in sepal identification...you will notice that there are two types of sepals visible in the photos you posted...the outer sepals and the inner sepals...the outer sepals are usually longer than the inner sepals as they are on the Berlin Blue and the Hatsu Arashi,but(!),interestingly enough the inner sepals on the ANU are longer than the outer sepals...a noteworthy(!) ID feature...


Janis - GEE(!)...I sure would like to hear some kind of feedback(!) on how your "let's try to get some pure seeds by using the baggie method" turned out...Did any of the plants or parts 'die'...do the flowers that you bagged appear to be producing seeds...if you happen to get a free minute...PLMK...

I'm sorry Ron...... I think the first time was a dismal failure :( The day I choose ended up being nasty rainy and cloudy, and cool and the flowers didn't even really open. Starting tomorrow it is supposed to sdtart being nice again, so I plan to try again

I self-pollinated 3-each of my 'Dark Blue Henka Blue Type' and the 'Gray Smoke' this morning.
That was a neat experience.
Jerry has a Magnifying Visor [I guess is what you call it - the kind a jeweler wears to work on stones and jewelry], so, I could see what I was 'attempting' to do nicely.
That was amazing because I have never even thought to look at a MG with a Magnifier.
I think I messed the first one up on the 'Gray Smoke'. Then, decided to do it manually rather than with a brush - like you suggested to Kevin, and that worked great. I can't wait to see if they produce pods.

Emma, alas I have not the time to keep up with everything that is going on in my life, maybe next year we can try this pollination experiment. I'm on a call list to deploy to the hurricane ravaged lands, where, when and what I'll be doing is to be announced.

Ron, is the change in the corolla pattern of Star of India is related to the age of the plant, or is it photoperiod effect, or is it temperature effect, or all of the above? So many questions, so little time LOL.
