Hi everyone. Robert you are sure one busy dude!! Seems like you stay with your projects, I start, then they sit and eventually I go back to finish them.
Meezer that pie looks sumptious. Haven't had that in ages. Still full from supper, but I'll take a piece to have later.
Darius, glad you slept though the shakies. We get them occasionally here, but are more common in Western Ky. (KyRU site)
Molly, hope you fare okay during the coming hurricane. I wish you could send the rain our way. Although the weather person says that we will get rain after midnight tonight and all day tomorrow.
Mary didn't know you had a JRT. Male or Female? I often share stories about my male Bruno 15 months. This is the second one we've had. Bruno is very laid back and spoiled rotten by me.
Sarv, tried a sports bra sometime ago, and although have never been in a strait jacket, the bra surely is worse!!. I guess the idea is to flatten the appendages so they won't move!!
Well I am going out and cut my petunias back for the 3rd time this summer. I will give them a small dose of MG this time. Maybe this will be the last trim before frost. I will check in later.
Coffee and...Part 27...! :-D
Defoe - trimmed my petunias back so far that they croaked!! Oh well, butter luck next year.
Bal, I declare you are the workingest guy I know! You should give lessons to a few DH here... Mine is a real pokey Joe, but he is always puttering at something. He loves to make everything from scratch or make something from what he has laying around here. The deer were eating my hostas one summer and he took an old kettle pan and wired 5 popcans inside and hung it in the tree. When the wind blew it jiggled and scared them away. Worked good unless there was no wind - then they came and ate anyway!! You have 80 brugs!! I have one called 'golfito' - do you happen to have that one? It sure looks the same as the EP I have. For some reason I thought it would be yellow-gold.
Yum - pie=- give me a big piece - I never make them myself as I cannot leave them alone. I could eat a whole one by myself - easily. Had my folks out for hot dogs and fresh veggies from the garden - rounded off with ice cream sundaes. Tasted good. Then we played two hands of rummycube - love that game.
DH is now watching that disgusting wrestling, so I will keep busy here for a while, then hit the hay.
Darius- my gosh an earthquake!! Glad nothing crashed down. I am such a light sleeper- I hear everything (my teenagers hated it as they could never sneak in or out - I always heard them...) I did take an allergy tab and slept 4 hours - a real long time for me!
One of my kids has a video cam that they got 2 yrs. ago. It quit working, and they took it to get repaired. Cost was $233 - can you imagine!! It is a cannon and they said NO ONE would touch them - you had to send them back to Cannon. They are really in a funk - guess they will have to get a new one. Bad thing was it worked until they loaned it out to another family member- returned unworking. Of course the borrower said he didn't do anything to it. Lesson learned - don't loan big ticket items.
Mary = I checked for that juicer thing, but it was over $100 bucks and I can't afford to drop that much on it. I checked on ebay, but there were none there either. Guess I will just have to do it the way I did last year. I never can figure out how much sugar to add - my taster is off.
Gosh, it's getting dark early here- it is 8:17 and the sun is setting. I get tired when it turns dark outside. In the winter, I sometimes fall asleep at 7pm. = then I get up at 1am ready to start my day. I am really turned around then. Oh well...
Hi again. Robert, that's a nice job you are doing on the shed. What will the inside be? a workshop, den, or ? How big is it? Tell your friend John that we enjoy looking at projects and would love to see some of his artwork.
I went to visit with a neighbor who lives a couple of miles up the road today. We looked around at the flower beds at her place and then later she came here and we sat down and weeded while we visited. Next week I will go help her weed while we visit some more. We both agree that it is more fun to weed when we have somebody to visit with. I sent her home with some summer squash. Hers have lots of leaves but so far no squash.
This morning I discovered that one of my retired endurance horses had gotten into a barbed wire fence and cut his leg and so I brought him out of the pasture to hose off the wound and put some herbal remedy on it. I will have to do that for about 3 more days. No sign of infection but I have penacillin on hand just in case. I only give antibiotics as a last resort, not as a preventative measure.
Tomorrow I will be helping the neighbor move his cattle to a corral near where they are pastured and sort out a bunch of steers that are ready to be butchered. He will haul them home and then to the slaughter house. He is totally organic and sells frozen cut and wrapped grass fed meat to several customers, a farmers market and at least one restaurant. The lame bull needs to be replaced, he is no better after resting a few days and looks like he has lost more weight, so the mobile slaughter unit will come to butcher him in the field in a few days. Sad, but things like that happen. Meanwhile, they are looking for a new bull of the same breed and will have a later calving season, or possibly 2 calving seasons with a gap in the middle. On a farm it's always something going wrong, it's not all sunshine, flowery meadows and nice breezes. Some years it seems to be all work and not much profit.
Have a great evening, see you tomorrow sometime.
Well I said I was going out to cut petunias back, but got sidetracked. DH wanted to go fishing, so we took off. DH caught a 4 lb catfish, all I caught was what I call "cat fish" so little that you give them to the cats to eat!! Took the dogs with us, my dear JRT Bruno, buried something in the edge of the lake, and came to me with his nose covered in slimy mud!! Of course he wanted to "kiss" me. The rat terrier found a hole and dug the whole time we were there, (about 90 minutes) finally came out with a muskrat. She is good. DH took her squirrel hunting the other day, and although he didn't kill any squirrels, she treed on several.
They are predicting rain for after midnight tonight, so I hope I will awaken to the pitter-patter of rain on the windows.
Went to Orthopaedic Surgeon today, don't have to go back unless pain is unbearable. Said the only solution is surgery and I am not ready to think about that. Still have the brace and it seems to be helping. He is so good looking and single, don't mind seeing that Dr. at all. LOL.
Well, off to bed,and hopefully peaceful sleep. Will have banana nut bread for you in the morning.
I'll have some of that nut bread, Defoe, that is if you are up to serve it LOL, in the meantime I 'll admire Robert's handy work once more
Maria.
Where is everybody???????????
Maria
'Morning Maria, Started ti respond earier but one of those pesyy
migraines came in and is slow to go away.Is a beautiful morning
here. Might go to he Evergreen State Fair this weekend and see the dog
comppetitinns.DW going to the cabin so I have lots of clean uo work to do .
Not typing so well and too lazy to correct.More later.Have a good day.
Lunch time here!! I just got back from helping new DIL with a garage sale. She didn't really need any help as she had a friend hosting it with her. But I sat and gabbed for 3 hrs, then came home. Pleasant morning. I took over 50 plus paperbacks - I sold three! got me a whole 75 cents!! I hope she will give the rest away, I certainly don't want any of them back.
Not much of anything happening here. I need to get out and plant the new stuff I bought. It got really wilted yesterday, so I need to give them a good soaking.
Fall coming makes me blue. Even tho I like the cooler weather, it means my garden walks will soon be over and I will be stuck in the house. But then I can tackle my jumbled up closets! It is more fun cleaning them with a friend - any of you want to come over?? LOL
Hope the hurricane hasnt made too much mischief for our Fla friends. Well, time for lunch!
hi there everyone :)
i brought some sweet carolina canteloupe for y'all ... save your scraps for the chickens! it's their favorite meal :)
the skies are carolina blue! we're having some marvelous weather here in north central nc. i treasure these respites from the oppressive heat & humidity. i've been working non-stop in the yard the past two days, instead of chilling in the a/c with my laptop. the dh had the day off
yesterday, so all the brute strength stuff i'd been saving up
got accomplished. he also went and got me another pick-up load
of free city leaf compost - compost mountain is getting bigger, yay!
i've been out garden-touring in my jammies, as usual, in between faxing stuff to daughter's school for the financial aid quagmire. there's an anole factory in my russian sage and i watched the babies frolick for awhile - they're so darned cute.
i sure hope molly didn't float or fly away ... looks like we're gonna get
some much-needed rain from katrina. thanks, molly, for sending it our way :)
the figs i dried are disappointing. they aren't plump and nice like the store-bought kind. they're not hard as pine bark like the first ones i did, but they shrank up to mere little bits. this will drive me crazy till i get it right, like everything else i attempt.
i got my kitchen garden laid out yesterday, with rocks marking the corners and leaky garden hose (i was gonna throw away) marking the boundaries. what a sad piece of weedy land it is ... lots of shovel work ahead just getting it leveled up. it'll probably be two years before this
20x20 patch is ready to grow veggies ...
i trimmed my hair for the sole purpose of spreading it around my rose to keep the rabbit away. it seems to have worked - no more missing canes this morning. i put hardware wire around my swamp sunflower, and that solved that lil problem, too. i have a lot of hair i'm willing to donate to this cause :)
aria, how was the reception the other night? i hope you had a good time and some good food :)
robert, 80 brugs?!? holy guacamole, man! how do you keep them fed?
do they overwinter outside? i've got one brug that keeps me hopping just checking on water & fertilizer needs.
darius, i was up in the middle of the night feeding my infant daughter when the plates i had hung on the dining room wall started rattling. it sounded like the furnance was jumping up and down. the next morning the news said we'd had an earthquake. it was a 3.something. except for those of us up in the middle of the night feeding babies, no one was aware of it when it happened. this happened in north central maryland, of all places. so, i've been thru a hurricane and an earthquake - now all that remains are tornadoes, volcanic explosions & tsunamis. i think i'll pass on all 3.
i tried to do the garden chat tuesday morning ... the java thing loaded up and i got the chat room page, but no matter what i clicked nothing happened. was very disappointing. i'd set my alarm to make sure i was up in time. is there a trick to getting into the chat room?
the windsock is telling me there's a lovely breeze outside ... off i go for more garden adventures. have a wonderful day, everyone.
peace,
dig
Hi everyone,
Diggingit, thanks for the canteloupe, ummmm, one of my favorites. It's so refreshing, I'd love to be able to grow it but my season is too short for mellons.
I started a lasagna bed about 2 years ago. It sat under snow all winter (not frozen but v-e-r-y sloooowly breaking down) and I planted in it about 6 months later. You can do this. Have a look. Go over to the Garden Talk forum, and on page 2 at the moment is a thread I started called "Lasagna bed, so far" with pictures and discriptions. With all that leaf compost you have a goldmine there to spread over it. I added some potting soil where I thought it needed it in some of the deeper holes, but mostly it was ok. There is very little of the original material that I can identify anymore and it is time to add some more to the top.
This morning I woke up about 3am to my dog barking and heard coyotes yapping. So for the rest of the night I wondered if the sheep in the field next to us were ok, and at daylight I got the binocculars and looked. Can't see anything dead but I can't see the whole field. Last week a lamb was killed so we know the coyotes still have a taste for lamb and know where to find one. I watched a red fox hunting mice, he is so pretty, his tail is as long as his body and very bushy with a white tip. When he pounces on a mouse it is poetry in motion, well, I think so but not the mouse!
The tv is on so I can get updates on the hurricane that is apparently going to give Florida a 1-2 punch. Right now it is out over the gulf and strengthened from when it left land as a tropical storm. I am seeing the pictures of the damage from it when it hit land as a category 1 hurricane last night. The folks farther north had better board up their windows and prepare to go inland since it will be stronger yet when it hits land again. Stay safe!
Time to get something done while I wait for my neighbor to let me know when to help him with the cattle.
Dig, you probably need to re-download Java. Maria (aria) just had to do that and it worked. Here's the thread about it: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/536544/
Reception was very nice at a museum in our town, Digs, we have many antiques that were saved by the elders from way back starting around in the16 hundreds. Collections are still coming from all over the country whose ancestors were from here... Many are from my husbands family. I am a member too, it is called the Antiquarian Society, it was established in 1894 to get all these old items organized. Last night we welcomed new members.
It was my very first time out in the community since DH died, felt very strange to be without him.
Digs, had no problem getting Java, chat came on at once, hope yours does too when you try again.
Sorry about your head ache, Robert, I know what that feels like but do not worry about typing errors, I am the worlds worst, it is just embarrassing when it looks like one cannot spell. LOL but most of us do know.
Maria
Well today was a bust - I didn't get a thing done besides pouting - you'd think I was a teenager!! I want to do something, but don't know what! It is a nice evening and I have walked around the garden a zillion times. Japanese beetles are still gnawing at my stuff- I am so sick of them.
I think I need to make a list of things I want to do and then pick one and do it. I always feel better after I get something done, just need a boot in the fanny to get going on it.
Friend just got a computer and emailed me- so fun to hear from her. She was a neighbor who used to live across the street and moved. She said she got a compaq for $300 from Staples. Do you think she is right?? I can't imagine spending that little for one.
DIL took their cat to be put down and ended up taking their 8 yr old son. He was there for the whole thing - she said they held the cat and kissed it crying the whole time. The vet came in afterwards and hugged DGS and told him he was a brave boy and that his cat sure loved him. DIL said he cried and cried going to bed that night. I went over today to see him and he was fine - been looking on line for another kitty already. Gosh losing a pet sends me over the edge...I am a basket case just thinking about it.
I just had 4 frozen oreos - they didn't even taste very good- please help yourself so I don't eat the rest of the pkg.
Sorry to hear about the kitty, what a brave boy to go along. Our pets have been an education for my kids, watching the full cycle of life. They are animal lovers to the core. I still choke up over old Hobbes, poor thing.. Even when they are suffering, it's hard to let go.
Didn't rain on us for golf but it is supposed to rain tonight. A whopping quarter of an inch....I watered the front but I'm just about to give up on the flowers. DH's buddy sent a big bag of ripe tomatoes home with him today, had two of the big red ones sliced, with dinner. I sent him a slab of the banana cream pie, so he's rewarded! Packed up roast beef and ham sandwiches for our road trip tomorrow. DH says we are leaving at 5 a.m. (If I wake up first and shake him out of bed.....LOL) Can't stand much of that road food, too much grease. Gonna wear a loose T-shirt and jeans and hope it doesn't get too hot. The truck has A/C which, if we use it, brings the mileage down to about 10 mpg. He still figures it's cheaper than having the vehicle shipped up here. Told me to bring my pillow, and a book....like I need a reminder!
We are beginning to look like a used car lot. DGS is supposed to come over tomorrow and finish up his truck,so that would be one less. Guys that are supposed to side the new garage called and said the shipment of siding hasn't come in yet, so that will be yet one more delay. This has been going on a year now, bit by bit. I just roll my eyes and remind myself that it's not my problem!!
A Compaq for $300? Sounds like a deal, unless it was a return or refurbished. AOL is offering a $300 deal, for the computer, (don't recall the brand) plus sign up for a year of AOL at $30 a month, you get the tower, the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. And is loaded with software and ready to go.
I'd better check my list and make sure I have all the stuff I need to survive 12 hours in a truck. See y'all on Sunday, have a good weekend!
DH brought up the big Igloo cooler which was in the lower garage (for his brother's endless supply of beer), and it had been closed up so you can imagine what it looked like. He took it into the Jacuzzi and we scoured it out with Comet, and now it looks presentable and I'm willing to put food in it.
Aria, I was up way before 8:30, more like 6:00, my arm wakes me up early every morning. Robert so sorry about the migraine. Hope it got better during the day. What kind of dog trials do you go see? Sarv, wish I could have put some stuff in the yard sale. I have been saying that I was going to have one, but it is so much trouble. I know what you mean about fall making me blue. I can't stand the thought of being in the house the whole winter, not being able to get out and plant and weed. I did plant about 6 things that I had gotten on sale about 3 weeks ago, they had been sitting in the garage. I had wanted to have my load of dirt hauled and make the new bed, but I put them in a temporary place, and will move them when the bed is finished. DH is going to be gone on Sunday, I wonder if the "dirt man" would deliver on the Sabbath?Diggingit, thanks for the cantaloupe, very good. If you every want to experience tornados, I live in the appropriate place. The spring has the most favorable conditions. They are not pleasant, have been on the edge of one, it was scary. Mary E. we have coyotes here, we hear them almost every evening and early morning. Lots of neighbors will not let young calves out to pasture because of them. Every time my house cat "miss boots" goes on one of her extended trips outside, I wonder about her safety. She has always come home though. She went out Wednesday night about 10:00 and has not returned yet. The longest she has been gone is 2 weeks. Sarv, sorry to hear about the DGS kitty. That, too is a part of life. Meezer, where are you going? Sounds like a long road trip. I don't travel as well as I used to, have to make frequent stops to stretch the kinks out.
Gee I hope Molly is safe and doesn't have any damage. Darius, you have been quiet today, you doing better?
I have been in and out today, didn't get a lot accomplished, but I will try harder tomorrow. Well, will check back later, or see you in the morning. I sure would like breakfast in bed tomorrow, do I have any volunteers to do that for me? LOL
Yeah, I have been quiet... nothing much to say.
Ahh the road trip....just down to Des Moines to pick up a Ford Maverick that DH claims is a steal, and which he also claims he will sell at the swap meet, in September. Uh huh. But first he'll have to play with it, shine it up, jazz up some hardware, blah blah blah. We will see if it disappears in September. I'm sure I'm invited along so that he can claim I am a co-conspiritor. .. . . . .. . :>P
I'm in a funk -grouchy, with no news at all. I used to get this way when I had to go back to work after the summer break, but I am retired - for heavens sakes! Sheesh - gotta get a grip on myself. Gonna have breakfast -maybe that will make me snap outta my doldrums.
IT'S RAINING! HALLELUJAH! - and no, I'm not out dancing naked in it! Don't know the "official" amount we got (and are getting) but the birdbath is full (and was dry last night). That's about 1.5 inches. We're so glad that finally we got a break. Doesn't look like we'll get any cool out of it though.
Anyone heard from Molly? Saw pics this morning on tv about all the damage in Ft. L. and wondered. Of course there are a LOT of people without electricity and phone. Hopefully she's okay. I know we have other members in that area too - just can't think of any.
Sarv - you make me think of that line Cher says in "Moonstruck" = 'Snap outta it!' - but man - I know those types of days. Do something special for yourself - that always works for me!
Well - have to say my cold is on the outs. My cough is much less and today I'm actually feeling just a wee bit ambitious. I have to work some (work work) to catch up on things - but not too long. Then I'm going to tackle something in this house. Haven't figured out what yet - but something.
Good mornin' all....
M.
good morning!
i'm up early - maybe too early - i can't stop yawning. more coffee, that's the ticket. dh got up in the middle of the night to drive a moving
truck to maryland for a friend. ds went to visit a friend who just started at NC State Univ in Raleigh last night - he came in a few minutes ago! ah youth! so, it's me, the dog, and the sleeping ds today.
another pick-up load of leaf compost appeared yesterday ... this time, it was the ds who got it to surprise me. i was surprised, alright :) he even off-loaded it directly onto the front beds i'm building. he loves his mama and has never been too old or too cool to hug me in front of his pals. his heart is as big as the great outdoors. i will miss him more than i can imagine when the marines take him away. it hurts to think about it. i'm prone to spontaneous crying spells these days, when i see the news and hear the daily american death tolls in iraq. it's too awful to contemplate, and i really try not to. i wish he'd join the coast guard, instead.
no news from molly, i see. she may be one of the zillions without electricity. hope she fared ok ... when that storm intensified just off her coast, it surprised everyone, i think.
darius i'll heed your advice and re-download java.
mary, thanks much for directing me to your lasagna bed thread. i first heard about this method just a few weeks ago, so i've got a small one going. don't know why it didn't occur to me to attack the kitchen garden area this way. it should certainly shorten my original two-years-till-veggies estimate. yay!
aria - most of the furniture in my house are antiques passed down through dh's family. it can be a mixed blessing, these ancient pieces of furniture. i've always felt compelled to keep it all even though it's not necessarily the style i'd choose. the few times i've mentioned selling some of it, dh gets a look of horror on his face. i'm hoping to pass it off to the kids in a few years ... before i leave this earth, i'd like to have furniture of my choosing :) anyway, i'm so glad you ventured out for the evening ... it's good for you!
anybody ever hear of freecycle.com? my dd told me about it. there's a freecycle group in most every county in the usa. you post a message about something you want to get rid of/give away and someone comes and takes it away! yahoo! i did my first post last night to get rid of an old metal school locker - it took 16 minutes to receive an email from someone who's picking it up today! it's a neat way to keep one girl's junk and another's treasure from ending up in the landfills. oh, the things that will disappear when dh moves to virginia ...
my first plant-for-postage ever arrived yesterday. i got a ginger lily from someone in Texas. i think i jumped too soon, tho ... it won't overwinter in the ground here, so i'll have to drag it inside every year, along with the brug. wish i had a greenhouse. someone gave me a frosty pink brug cutting and it finally looks like it "took" ... there's a leaf starting to emerge ... so now i'll have two brugs - i swore i'd never deal with tropicals, but one look & a sniff of those blooms did me in.
well, it's time to get on with the day ... there's so much i want to get done before Katrina's rain comes. i hope i don't have one of those days, sarv, with much to do and ya end up just spinning wheels.
have a great saturday, everyone :)
dig
I love antiques, Dig, though I thought it strange when I first came to this country what was considered old and what was not. To me nothing seemed particularly old unless it came from Europe, lol.
This house is full with them, there would be a lot more but gave them to my children who would be very angry with me if I got rid of them other than to them, and that is how It should be to keep up being caretakers of items that ancestors passed along.
Also, Dig, I can imagine how hard it is for you to sent a beloved son away to places that are not safe. Having lived through
Word War II I know what it is like, have been against any war since.
I love fruit, any kind at any time of the day. Just prepared one of those huge Papaya, size of a extra large cucumber and as long. The big bowl is full add the juice of a Lime, if you like some help your self
You are not the only one in a funk this morning, Sarv, I am there too. Had very little sleep last night. Went to the mall yesterday with my Daughter we bought lots of clothes for her, my present for their anniversaty and the same will be for her husband, who I love dealy. He is a Teacher, DD is a psycho therapist all the rest of them are teachers also. When I gpt home I missed a package, but remembered I told the sales person to hold it while we continued shopping, of course, I forgot all about it. Now I have to go back and get it, ugh. Called DD last night, we both laughrd at our selves, two forgetful braines!
Betsy, glad you got some rain, even had a nice rainbow but it must have rained some where else we have not had any for more than a month, everything is dying.
Maria
Hap posted (over on the Weather thread about Katrina) that she had talked to Molly. Molly is fine... just no power.
My Aunt Jean (my mother's baby sister, 82) lives in North Miami, is also without power but no damage. Having no power is bad because she's on oxygen and also needs power for the nebulizer treatments she needs. FP&L says it could be a week.
I'm in the PITS today too.
Okay you guys, snap out of it!!. I am first cousins with funk, grouch, depression, crying jags, they come to visit occasionally!! Just not today.
We had rain last night, about .7 inch. Not near enough, but my slogan for this year has been "every little bit helps."
Slept until 8:00 am this morning. That is so unusual, usually up at 5:30 or 6:00. I took 2 tylenol PM last night so I am assuming it works. Had coffee, read the paper, then a nice leisurely breakfast. Nobody on this forum offered to come bring me breakfast in bed as I requested last night, so had to cook it myself.
Went out to run some errands, bank, library etc. Stopped at several yard sales. Bought a brand new pair of jeans for $4.00, and the cutest birdhouse for $2.00. It is a hand crafted University of Kentucky piece. DH is a big UK fan. DGD is into nail polish, and bought 20 bottles of Estee Lauder in a gift set, never been opened for $1.00. I know all of this was unnecessary, but I like the bargain, no the finding of the bargain better than the merchandise.
So far it has been a leisurely day. If DH wants to eat tonight, he either cooks or we go out. Don't want to ruin my "do nothing day" by slaving in the kitchen.
Miss Boots, my inside cat who had been on an extended outdoor trip finally came home last night about 10:00. I would love to put a video cam on her just to see where she goes. She is spayed, so I know it's not romance that keeps her away!!
Glad to hear that Molly is just without electricity.Hope that she doesn't have any damage from Katrinia. Florida has sure had more than their share for awhile.
Well going to polish my dirt stained nails, not to be fashionable, but to help camaflage the ground in dirt, that I can't scrub out, then I think I hear my recliner calling out to me. LOL Will catch you all later.
Would you believe that I have done NOTHING all day long! I tell ya the last time I felt like this I was PG - and I KNOW that can't be the problem now! It is comforting to hear that I am not the only one in a funk today - misery loves company ya know.
Folks called and want us to go out to dinner with them - I would give anything NOT to go, but given their age, I feel obligated. So we will go - DH is grumbling too - he wants to get carryout and come back here and eat - that means dishes here- so that's a no go in my book. We are going Chinese.
I tried on some capris that were big at the beginning of the summer and I can hardly zip them now - that is part of my funk I think - I just feel bloated - plus my arm is still really bothering me.
I dusted my main floor (we don't live up there) and I cannot tell ya how much black dust/dirt I got off the tables. I cannot believe it!! I swept the floor in the kitchen and it was awful too - how does this happen when we don't even go up there? But it does look nice there now. I still have 4th of July decorations out and need to pack those away soon - maybe labor day!
Since I did nothing today, I am gonna make myself get some things done tomorrow- today was my day of rest!!
Called my DIL and DS was a crab today too - She wanted to go out with a friend from another state and he said NO, she didn't get all her jobs done. Man, if I was told that, I would go for sure. She just rolls her eyes at him , but she won't go if he doesn't want her to. That girl needs to get a spine!
Oh another good one- talked to my best friend and she said her husband got mad at her and slammed the frig door- it squished one of the top pair of girls (if ya know what I mean) - she said she was so mad that she threw a container of potato salad at him and smashed all over the wall. I tell ya, there is something in the air - they never bicker! LOL That one made me chuckle...
Glad to hear that Molly is ok -
Darius, fess up - what are you in a funk about?? Recline on the couch and tell me about it...lol
Just funky feeling, Sarv. No real NEW problems, thankfully. I think it's just accumulated stress. I did pop a couple of blood vessels in my right eye, on the nose side. It's a tad painful and looks awful. Who needs an eye that's solid red? (besides the colored part in the center)
Well, DH didn't want to cook so we are going out to eat. Don't know what we will have, but it won't get fixed here!!
Cheer up Darius, the burst blood vessels will just start everyone talking about it being a"hang over". All the consequences without the fun.
Sarv, the man who slammed my top girls into a fridge door, would find himself with both hands protection the family jewels!! Harsh words maybe, violence no way!
Do you suppose the moon is in a wrong position or something for all to be down today? Dog days are past so know it can't be that.
Well DH is ready to go, will post again later and let you know what kind of meal we had.
D'cat... it (eye) doesn't look anything like the bloodshot eyes of a hangover, LOL. Just one big solid red eye now, but at least the pain is lessening.
Sarv, I am just now envying your dinner out... Mine was 2 pints of chicken/turkey stock with some meat that I canned last fall, and some angel hair pasta thrown in. It really needed some veggies.
Helloooooooooo, anybody here? I brought some frozen yogurt so we can endulge and be healthy at the same time. Here's some granola with nuts and some craisins to adorn the top and that even looks good in a paper cup! Look, I just made a face with freckles!
Come on girls, snap out of it! Take control, refuse to be manipulated by moods! I guess we all have a day like that now and then but I refuse to let it get to me. Obstinate maybe. Probably.
This morning we sorted sheep again. The flock is getting smaller and smaller. This was the final sort and we have a small bunch with 23 replacement ewe lambs, another with 35 lambs to sell to a buyer who gets them from all over and takes them to a feed lot somewhere, and 10 to go to the slaughter house on Monday. Those 10 will be organic locker lambs. Really, all of them are organic, (raised without chemicals) but these 10 will be for repeat customers. Right now the market for organic beef is better than the market for organic lamb. One buyer took 100 lambs a few weeks ago, they will be resold as organic or natural. There is so much confusion over these names, but if you buy organic or natural it means there have been no growth hormones put into the animal to make them grow faster, and therefore no residue to be passed on to you, and also no antibiotics which animals are given when they enter feedlots just because there are so many animals coming in from various places with who knows what that they do that to keep disease from running rampant. Ok, everyone thoroughly confused now?
My lawn got a haircut this afternoon even though it was already 85. It looks much better. I've already started the watering cycle. When I get all the way around the house it is almost time to start over. Our heat and low humidity and wind dry things out so fast, a lot of the perennials are looking sad, and the violas just went flop, "we are not standing up until it cools off". There's lots of trimming and deadheading that needs to be done but not today, I've been in the sun long enough and will be out in it for several hours tomorrow moving cattle. We are going to start early so may be able to finish the job before it gets hot.
We all need to be praying for the folks in the path of the storm, the latest track has it hitting Louisiana and Mississippi, but really everyone on the north gulf coast could be in for a bumpy ride. It's up to category 3 now and still getting bigger and stronger! Looks scarry even on tv, I can't emagine living where something like that is coming right for me. No thanks, I prefer earthquakes, been through a couple of sizeable ones, 1948 and about 1964 in Washington state. They are pretty much over before you have time to be scared.
Gotta jump in the shower. The neighbors invited me down for dinner for helping them this morning. Sure can't turn that down when somebody else is doing the cooking.
SNAP OUT OF IT!
Let's all think happy thoughts......what makes us smile?????
Silly hats and funny socks
Warm, fuzzy furbellies (cat or dog - or gerbil or rabbit...you get the idea)....
Butteflies fluttering and hummingbirds hummering...
Fresh coat of paint and a job well done
Having friends you can count on through it all (like all those I have here at DG)
Smell of the ocean or fresh rain.
ok - make yourself think and add to the list...
THAT'S AN ORDER!
m. ;->
D'cat....I'm like your Miss Boots, spayed.....it hasn't stopped my romancin' any.....LOL
Hap
PS...I wondered where all you guys went.....then I saw that I forgot to mark this as a Watch.....Dummy me....
Darius, hope your eye gets better reallllll fast.
Hap
Hap, you ARE FUNNY... being like Ms. Boots indeed! Spaying only turned my interest down half a notch, LOL.
Eye looks worse but feels better. Should clear up in about 3 days.
My BIG concern now is all the flock of DG'ers along the Gulf Coast and inland. I've been in too many hurricanes, including the one where my family escaped with their skins but no house, no clothes, no ability to cook, etc.
MaryE, thanks for the explanation about organic/natural from the farmer's end!
My DH and I were talking at supper and both agreed that we had quite a hiatus between Andrew in 92 and the nonsence that started about 2002. Of course, last year took the cake. I also wonder if age might have something to do my feeling that the seriousness of these hurricane is greater or is it that there is just more news and hype?
Hap
Hap, I went through some pretty bad ones as a youngster, up through Hurricane Donna with 160 mph winds, early sixties, before I moved to MD.
Without all the news and hype we had no idea we were in so much danger. Of course, I lost friends, and some of them lost homes. My family lost everything but the actual shirts on their backs in the 1926 storm... no house, no clothes, no way to cook... Luckily, they escaped to an uncle's house during the eye.
I think it's a combo of age and media that makes us so much more aware.
I guess so, Darius....or we just have more time to think about things...LOL
Almost 5:00 and time to wind down for awhile. Fantastic day today. Bright and sunny and a delightful 75°. managed to crate up a box and get it out, watered, changed over to a really good 100 ft non-kink garden hose, burned a big pile of old shingles and scrap wood and cleaned up the wood-shop (at least a part of it). The 'bestest' part is the pattern is inked in on the door post wood. So this evening, after a wee scotch and soda I get to start carving. Well what about those other things you haven't finished yet, he says. There's 3 stained glass name plates and a BIG window, and speaking of windows, the 6 new ones should be delivered this coming week, and each of the bays has to be rebuilt. You dummy, why don't you finish something before you start a new toy. He answers," because it is just my nature, my Karma, to be obstinate, unfocused, irrational, ambiguous, and a bunch of other things that I have not even heard of yet". Well gosh girls, if I don't get my 'lower extremity' out there and get to work the day will be done.
Take care of the top floor girls ladies, and Darius please take care of yourself,
Mary, boy thats a lot of lamb chops.
Chin up ladies, and whatever else may arise. Tomorrow is a brand new day.It may not be any better, but doesn't it have that new car smell ?
Gee, it took me a while to catch up. Is everyone's mood improved by now? I recommend a pedicure, (most of our fingernails are shot anyway and a pedi is sooo luxurious) a meal you don't have to cook or clean up after, and a good book to take to bed! Preferably with one of your fur buddies keeping you company and looking at you with adoring eyes. If that doesn't work pretend your DH is George Clooney, no, wait, Robert Redford, and let him give your new fancy feet a nice rub. Meezers Magic Mood Manipulator. Let me know if it works!
Road trip went fine. Car looks good. Guarantee it won't be sold next month. DH is already talking about replacing floor, fixing fender wells, blah blah blah. Gas was $2.46.9 for 89 octane.... on the way back just before we hit the border, filled up the truck, filled up the Maverick, and three five gallon gas cans! I told DH we wouldn't have to pay for cremation if we got T-boned on the highway, we'd just be one big fireball!!
I stopped yesterday at the new "cake" shop up at the hwy intersection and bought two cheesecake muffins for our road breakfast, and they were super delicious. We polished off both carafes of coffee by noon, and ate our sandwiches for lunch on the way home, with some sweet yellow cherry tomatos from DH's buddy.
When we hit Mukwonago, about eight miles from home, I said head for the Taco Bell because it's your only chance for dinner tonight. When we got here, Alex was working on his truck so he helped us polish off the burritos, gordita, and that other folded up thing that looks like a change purse that you squeeze to open. You know what I mean?
Anyway, now I've got heartburn but at least I don't have to clean up the kitchen.
Mary I'm going to check that lasagna thread too, that might be the best approach for the beds under the killer walnut. DH doesn't want to use 2" X 12" lumber like we did on our old ones, says it woudn't look right, and since I depend on him for muscle, we'll have to think of some other way to do it. Suggestions welcome. We'll have to put some kind of permeable barrier on the bottom as the soil there must be saturated with the juglone from the trees, that retards the plants.
Robert I hope your migraine went away quickly. DH is on constant meds for cluster headaches which are migraines that bounce back within hours, and sometimes repeat for days. He hasn't had a real banger for a while, so we are thinking that the current Rx is doing the job. Another med he was on worked very well, but they took it off the market!! Don't even want to know why. LOL
All those earthquakes and hurricanes make me glad we live in the middle, although we've surely had our share of tornados lately. Some speculate that there were always lots of them but now we have spread out so far into the countryside that they hit homes instead of forests and plains. And we hear about them endlessly on the radio and tv. Are there more? I dunno.
I could have spit as much moisture as the rain we got last night. Tomorrow will require watering all around just to keep things alive if not thriving. I need to move the dragon's blood sedum out from under the death trees and pray that they recover before frost, and survive the winter.
Me got spayed long time back (70's), a rather racy girlfriend of mine said, "Just take out the nursery and leave the play pen.....!!" Hadn't noticed any bad effects from it, except for the moustache. LOL Well, not a real moustache, just a couple of long hairs that like to grow out on the left side of my upper lip. Being Italian, I'll gladly settle for yanking those out, since they aren't growing out of big lumpy moles! (I know, Robert, TMI)
DGS swiped one of my Dove bars but said he left a dollar in the box. I told him I can't eat a dollar, he'd better plan on replacing the ice cream. He groaned and said he was afraid that's what I'd say.
Pity the man who slams one of my girls in the frig door, or any other door, or tells me I can't go somewhere because my "jobs" aren't done. There will be a sincere and heartfelt memorial service for him. If anyone thinks that times have changed, just look at what some young women put up with to have a man in their life. I raised my girls to understand they were responsible for themselves, and if they could take care of themselves, they never would have to take any **** from anyone. Well......it worked on one.....! If it was calculated like batting averages........
Sending good thoughts to our friends in the path of the storm, trust they will be safe and have power restored quickly and no damage.
Glad we got home early so I could check in with the gang...oh, and to the above cure for the doldrums, throw in a couple of high quality chocolate bars.............
Meezer, you are a hoot. Take out the nursery but leave the play pen. Yah I got spayed too in the 70's . And then the nice sincere memorial service, I laughed out loud at that. Sprayed the beverage of my choice on the keyboard at that.!!!
Well we went out for Chinese tonight. Real good. Then took a scenic drive (I thought) but really was to look at a fishing boat a buddy had seen. Then started home, but DH saw trucks and horse trailers heading in a particular direction and ended up at a horse show. We enjoyed that so much, but a sad note, after one rider had finished the barrel course, just outside the arena, her horse collapsed and died. She was a young teenager, and very devastated over it. I don't blame her, can't stand to see any animal in distress. Evidently a heart attack. Ran into some friends and enjoyed the conversations greatly. All in all a good evening.
Brought my JRT (Bruno) some chicken from the restaurant, he just loves it when I bring him treats. He has to thoroughly welcome me if I have been gone 5 minutes or a week. He couldn't decide if he needed to kiss me or start on the chicken first. Love that little guy.
Well going to scoot on to bed, everybody sleep tight tonight, see you in the morning.
hi, everyone, took a while to catch up here.
Had a great time with DB and SIL. We grilled brats and I picked up sweet corn on the way home, great price - $1.00 dozen. They were thrilled to have good sweet corn. Get very little of it in Regina, SK, too short growing season. Mostly just get stuff shipped in - we all know what that means! I was going to pick up a Forestburg melon too but they were out. RATS! They are grown in a small area around Forestburg, SD - there is a different type of soil there, of course I can't remember the particulars, just how absolutely wonderful the melons are! You ain't lived til you ve had a Forestbrug melon!!! SIL and I spent a couple of hours on DG and PF. Also went thru my seed box and found a dozen or so she'd like to try. That's always fun!
The crud in my chest is not improving much. Very annoying! I'll be headed back to dr on Tues. if it's still the same then. I was quite hoarse yesterday and wondered if I could manage the whole day at work, but I was ok, voice didn t get worse or better so I just sounded sexy all day. HA HA!! DD had chest xray and blood work done Wed. They added a nebulizer to her antibiotics. Xray looked good except for one suspicious spot. She is finally getting better. No one else has picked up this nasty bug, thankfully!
Went to work early this am so I could stop at the Farmer's Market. Got a small box of tomatoes. Paid $15. for 22 lbs. The individual ones were selling for $2. to $2.65 per pound. They were all organic. Grabbed a few cucs too. Ate one, very little taste, :( hope the second one is better.
Stopped at Wallyworld on the way home, got dance slippers for Samantha and a couple of new girlie harnesses. I was down to one that I liked and it's looking pretty ratty and holey.
We had nice showers two nights in a row. Boy, is that a blessing. I hate watering - spigot on the front of the house and the side one, are not working so I have to drag the hoses all the way from the back. I need to whine more -- asked DH why they're not working. The side one drips and unknown on the front one. So I requested he look at them, we've been in this house 7 years and I'm sick of dragging hoses. A few more timely reminders are in order.
Hope the migraine, red eye and sore arm are all better... and praying also any other unmentioned emotional and physical pains all heal.
