Yummy pics, Clare!!! Hey even if the Duke doesn't smell good...that is one pretty flower!! Hurricane is a "looker" too eh?

Michael, got a brother? :) LOL

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Chantell! I did detect some coconut fragrance from Duke today. It is still pretty mild but not bad at all. Yes, Hurricane is definitely a looker and will get more striking as the outer color starts to fade, bringing out the inner red. I think reds in general have a reputation for not being the ones with the best fragrance, but as you know, fragrance is fairly subjective so many would disagree with that statement. To me, yellows seem to have the best fragrances followed closely by whites.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I do have a brother Chantell,
He is married and living in NH
3 lovely children and a great Lady in his life.
Sorry cant help ya there. ;)

Thanks for the Duke shots Clare.
I have always loved the flower.
And yes scent is subjective for sure!
Mrs. Malestrom (the flower) smells like sweet cherry candy. I love it.
My DSP (dearly departed) smelled mild like baby powder.
My Japanese Lantern smells a bit spicy..
I have whites that smell like Jasmine... ack* I hate it...
Celadine is one of my favorite scents, that true frangipani waft.. aaahhhhhh......
I am so excited as this year I should have about 20 new varieties blooming.
Including Aztec Gold and Peaches for scent? WOW!! I am looking forward to that!!

Thumbnail by Malestrom
Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

My pleasure, Mike. Duke's fragrance is not a bad one at all -- just mild. My least favorite fragrance is probably Intense Rainbow at this point. Gulf Stream is not that impressive either in my opinion. It's just okay, but I guess the colors make up for the lack of fragrance. I'll send you an email about the DSP. I too am looking forward to this coming spring and will have some new varieties blooming as well. I have some unknowns with inflo's, Som Raya, Florida Dawn, DSP, Celadine, Intense Rainbow, Pacific Pearl, SCP, Duke, Samoan Fluff, and some others will be blooming.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Yup,
I have about 6 new ones coming now and ones im bidding on.
India, Smiths Candy Apple, several from my favorite Hawaii Gal Suki also.
Im hoping to win some of Brads and get that last Quandamooka up here also.
Springll be here soon.
Im looking forward to new blooms.
Michah has a bloom in his flower room now.
Ill go see it tomorrow night.
What does Gulf Stream smell like?
Speaking of
Som-Raya, remember the one white I had that I thought was it?
It had the sweetest fragrance of any 'cept Mrs. Malestrom.
Its probably my favorite white.
Funny how a mistaken id can endup being a blessing.

yIkes did ya'll see how much that beautiful Apricot Dreaming ended up going for of Brads? To think I was going to place a bid on that gorgeous one... way beyond my means...so sad. You just know I saw his description of "spicy" scent...and I "needed" it....ok, I wanted it...
Michael...sweet pup...here's my trio...

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

You are very safe! LOL!
Thats one handsome looking crew.
I missed the final price on Brads Apricot what was it?
I won a few this week. 2 today from Brad.
He is the best
Never be too shy to bid.
Last year my buddy Micah won a 3 foot tall 2 tipped Princess Victoria for only $54.-
That was easily a $300.- plant.
Noone was paying attention that weeek lol!!
It always pays to play.
Ill bid $20.00 on most I like and then watch.
I had about 15 bids this week lol!
I have about 6 plants coming this way from auctions and purchases in the last 3 weeks.
More and more yet to come from generous souls who offered me replacements
and even more from a freind who is just incredibly generous!!
WOO-HOO!!
I have a nice celadine who gives lots of cuttings every 2 years.
I am able to give them away from time to time.
The blessing just keeps coming back WOOT!!
It helps to be kind to folks too LOL!!
Man im ranting!!!! dang steroids heh..... :P

Clare can you name this one? ;)

Michael - it was, I think, $82 - THAT'S what I meant by beyond my means...and how!!! Nah...I'm never too shy to bid...it's just when it started going up, up, up within the first few days of being listed....knew I was in trouble. I think the most I spent was on the Duke I got - now I wonder if I should've thought twice. The main reason I was intent on getting it was b/c of how the scent was described in listing and in emails with the seller. So what do I have?...a Duke and a Rainbow...from what you all have said two of the harder ones to root...yikes! Live and learn I guess. The other two are already rooted and being held - the celadine (21" - 3 tips - rooted) and the Miami Rose (2 tipped - rooted) that Hetty is holding for me. It's a start at least...
Yes...I feel very safe in my house...they're big babies - honestly BUT I never doubt their loyalty if something were to happen. I tell the folks with ADT each time...no thank you...already have my own home protection system. LOL

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

It sounds like your collection is off to a good start.
I reccomend you get an Aztec Gold next.
Scott Pratt is suppossed to be a tough one to root but I had 3 root for me.
Sometimes you just cant tell.
There seems to be a 'wanna live' factor for sure lol.
I have 2 Aztec Golds that took over 1 year to rot! lol!
They never finished rooting, just rotted.
I try to make it a practice to only but rooted for that reason.
I think a great pink for you would be a Slaughter Pink
Ill be at the Philadelphia Flower Show this friday and they always have a plumie stand there.
White, yellow and red or pink. No named ones though.

Ive sent the alarm guys away many times also LOL!
The best alarm in the world is a barking Dog!!

A flower show? Never been to one...how sad. Yeah right...now that's just a paycheck waiting to be spent on things I didn't even know I needed....LOL!! I'll have to refer to my "list" of scents Clare was gracious enough to share w/me to remind me what the Aztec & Slaughter's scents were - I'm really stuck on the spicey/sweet scents. Yeah I know...blah, blah blah...I've only said that a million times, Ha!! Next step will be to rent yard space from my neighbor's on either side of my townhouse...LOL...OMG, can you see it now? We'll have the prettiest row of townhouses in the developement!!!
Glad your dog at least has the sense to bark. Cant' tell you how many pizzas have about hit the sidewalk b/c mine (Rottie on left) likes to just stand in the dark beside me - until she smells the food and then decides to stick her big head on up...I tell you...I've got to start insuring the pizza. LOL...oh but it is funny at times.

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

Micheal,

That white you got is called Sang Dao, if I remember correctly. My Thai seller ID'd it for me when I asked him what it was. It is a nice white but definitely NOT Som Raya. LOL

Brad

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Guys! Great pictures! Michael, I'm so glad that people are sending you replacements and gifts and things. That is good news. You are such a nice person that you deserve all the gifts that you get. I should have a few for you this spring as well. Let me know if you still need the DSP in the spring. I saw that Roger said he could send you one in the spring. Are you trading cuttings of Mrs. Malestrom yet? Let me know as I would love to trade you something for it. Your white looks like it could be San Germain. I had an Aztec Gold rot on me last winter as well. I've also had cuttings that just refused to root and took over a year to rot too! I'm very tempted by Brad's auctions too, but I have spent a fortune already this year just on fertilizer, soil, miticides, pesticide gear, and plumies that I am going to hold off buying anything more for a while and just enjoy the ones that I have. I have several unknowns about to bloom, and those are always fun surprises. Smith's Candy Apple and Gulf Stream are the same plumie; the scent is faint peach.

Chantell, your babies are so beautiful! I love Rotts. My Duke is part Rott. Don't be sorry that you got Duke because it is beautiful, and you could really enjoy the fragrance. I think you would really enjoy Kauka Wilder as the scent is strong and fantastic, and I would highly recommend that one for you. Along with Miami Rose/Key West Pink and Celadine, Kauka Wilder is right there at the top of the list for fragrance.

Thanks Brad!!
Im glad to have a name for her, and she is magnificent.
Her scent is outstanding!! Sweet Baby Powder if I remember correctly.
The flower shape is lovely and she adds a wonderful touch to the visual effect of my lil piece o' paradise.

Clare, Ill be happy to have anything you send my way.
I treasure my plumies, but the gifted ones most of all.
When I start deciding which to move on the hardest part will be knowing that I never give the gifted ones away.
They are a large part of my collection.
Have you guessed what my mystery plumie above is yet?
I know what it is. ;)

I tell you Clare, that Duke is a sweet boy...just look at that face!! They all look like "pizza eaters" to me...LOL I'll keep an eye out for the one's you and Michael have mentioned...IF I see any that are reasonable AND rooted (LOL) I just might be tempted...maybe by then the weather will have warmed. The tribe (human) groan every time they see a box come through the door. I told them...ya'll are just jealous...LOL! Just wait till they see how pretty the plants will all look!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Michael, which one is your mysteria plumie? Is it the inflo above? Hmmm, that is a tough one to say. I know you lost a Pink Pansy, and hopefully, someone replaced that for you. Is it that one? Or is it Mrs. Malestrom? Let me know if you are parting with cuttings of Mrs. Malestrom. You have enticed me with the scent description.

Thanks, Chantell. Here he was about twelve years ago! We called him Devil Dog occasionally because he was so mischevious, but he just gets sweeter and sweeter with age. I will be inconsolable when we lose him. Florida Colors has Kauka for $15, and I don't think you will have trouble rooting a cutting, but you could get it grafted for $20. There was a seller named Pooba32 on eBay last year, and I got one from him for $8, but I don't know if he will return again this year.

Thumbnail by Clare_CA

OMG...LOOK at those paws!!! Whew! Tiny thing eh? So sweet!!! I've gotta find some of Amber when she was a pup...I didn't get her until she was 7 months old...so she wasn't real small...never has been. LOL
If no one minds my asking...what happend that Michael lost a lot of his plant babies? That is so sad!!
I'll keep a watch out for Pooba32 - then make a short list of what you all have mentioned and ask ya'll for a vote...it'll help me out. LOL

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I believe Hetty has rooted Aztec Golds looking for a home.
Send her a D-Mail to Dutchlady

Clare Im gonna tell you yet heh...
I want you to guess, its the white with the star shape
10 posts up. ;)

Mrs. Malestrom will be cut and shipped to 3 different locations around the world to satisfy the conditions for registering her.
I selected 3 locations that are quite diverse and people who I believe Ican trust to see that she does well there.
They are pretty sure to be permanent as well.
all fingers crossed heh..
Im afraid after that there wont be much left to share.
If there is You are on the list ;)
The list is only 6 people long including you and 4 will have been met by fall. Im hoping for rapid growth this year.
Ill plunge her into the ground and feed her fish heh....

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Oh, I guessed that was San Germain. No? The flowers look too small to be Dwarf Deciduous and too big to be Kina Kalakaua. I give up! I understand about Mrs. Malestrom. I am happy to wait until there is plenty to cut from. No need to cut her on my behalf. Thank you for putting me on a waiting list. I appreciate that.

Chantell, Aztec Gold and Kauka Wilder cuttings are plentiful as they are both good growers so you shouldn't have any problems finding them at a reasonable price. Since Hetty has your other two, she may be able to send you an Aztec Gold as well as Michael said. You might check with her first.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Clare,
Its a Venezuelan Snowball. ;)
Chantell, you need to do some seeds too.
No less than 50, you want to have a chance at finding the next 'big one'.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

SEEDS? Michael, that's a four lettered (take off the "S") for me. Don't know why I have such problems with them...but they do not like me...Says Sam I Am! :( Only seeds that have grown for me are cactus...LOL. However, I've never used that papertowel method I see ya'll talking about...so maybe there's hope yet. LOL

Longboat Key, FL

Hey Clare_CA~

Wassup? And how are you?

Anything rooted, yet?

Brad

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hey Darling Brad. How's my Flyboy? Hope you are keeping warm this winter. I'm looking forward to seeing your TW blooms this summer and mine too and, of course, Brad's White too! Did we decide we like "Flyboy White" or "Brad's White" best? I think I have "Brad's White" written on the tags. Yes, everything you sent me is rooting wonderfully in the nice warm greenhouse. The TW cuttings are well-rooted and ready to bloom. I'll be posting lots of pics this summer, I'm sure. You are such a dear for sending those to me.

Hugs and kisses,
Clare

Longboat Key, FL

Clare:

Doing well. Each morning I check on the color of the few blades of grass we own. If I see the green side -- all is OK.

It's been a nice winter -- and spring has sprung. The TW is full of tiny inflo's -- and the Brad's Whites are showing leaves. Sometimes I think the plumies look better when they're bare and gaunt. No spraying -- no nothing.

The good news is my Biblical Garden. We've been picking, and munching on, delicious figs -- and I still have one pomegranate waiting to be plucked off one of the trees. And, their new buds are showing red -- one has even popped open.

The tomato plants are already showing four leaves in their flats -- and the arugula is almosr ready for snipping.

There are still a couple of quarts of kumquats waiting -- the Persian limes are turning yellow, and almost hidden amid the new blossoms -- and the aroma of the other citrus perfumes the air (and drives the little winged things to frenzy.).

Man (and woman) misses so much if his/her comestibles all come from stores!

Hope you're well -- and, I can see, are obviously keeping busy.

Brad

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Did someone mention pomegranates? Yum-my!! Discovered those "back in the day" when I lived up Michael's way. How excited I was when I lived in CA for a bit...right across from my work...pomegranates galore...oh that was nice!!! I had a Cockatoo that loved those!! What a mess he made with them though!!! Too funny!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Clare and Michael - sure this question should be put someplace else but...I was wondering if either of you have or know of: Clematis 'Sweet Autumn' ? It sounds wonderful - scent-wise? Any opinions of it from ya'll?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Brad,

Your Biblical Garden sounds lovely. Figs are wonderful. Someday, I will have a fig tree when I have more room. I grew a couple of pomegranate bushes from seed just for fun one year. The red flowers were very bright and cheery, and the hummingbirds loved them, but the fruit wasn't that sweet, and because of my lack of room, they went off to a new home.

I am very late in sowing seeds for my vegetable garden this year and just did it the day before yesterday. I sowed seeds of tomato, cilantro, onion, green onion, chives, and peppers. You are so right that there is nothing like home-grown fruit and vegetables. We've been enjoying avocados, tangerines, and oranges for a few weeks now as well.

I hope you are well too, my friend. It sounds like you are doing just great and will be swinging that golf club shortly when warm weather comes. I'm glad to hear that TW is full of tiny inflo's. I will have to re-examine mine. I agree with you that plumerias are quite beautiful even without their leaves.

Chantell, I have heard of "Sweet Autumn Clematis." It is said to have a wonderful fragrance, but I don't grow it. Here's a link: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/683/index.html Be sure to read the comments because there are some positive and negative ones.

Here is another one. Is it just me, or does my Duke not look like other Dukes? It came from Florida Colors, who is the hybridizer of Duke, I think, so it should be Duke. The petal shape is wrong though. My friend Kukiat first noticed this a while ago. Hmmm. I need another opinion on this.

Chantell~

Pomegranates. They're delicious. And chock-full of anti-oxidants (whatever they are.) The trick is opening them underwater (in a basin.) The arils ( a scholarly name for the seeds) are great when added to salads. You chew, and eat the whole thingies.

But the flowers are gorgeous, too.

Be well

Clare~

Whad'ya mean -- when the warm weather comes? We're in the South. Except for the occasional rain, we've had no non-golf day this season.

And your blossoms look gorgeous. I am still stuck with just two varieties of plumies. You have to understand us (born) Bostonians. We don't buy things, we have things. It's a curse, but it keeps us from dying of envy of the grass on the other side of the street.

Be well

:)
