I'm looking for some advice on a short groundcover that would work in the city -- grass is simply too difficult for me.
Because of the surrounding buildings the amount of direct sunlight varies alot during the year (between 6-3 hours, the remainer of the time is a bright shade), the summer temps are always higher and winter temps are cooler than what is reported by weatherfolk (I'm supposedly in zone 6).
Would mazus reptans, creeping thyme or blue star laurentia survive the baking 100 degree days in the summer and the longer stretches of shade when it's cooler? Any other suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks

groundcovers for the city
vinca minor, pachysandra, creeping jenny, ajuga
I think thyme is a good choice. It looks good and its density keeps the weeds away.
I use thyme also - it's hardy, it blooms in the spring, and no amount of walking all over it seems to do it any harm.
