OMG, I HIT THE MOTHERLODE TODAY!!!

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

OMG, I hit Bargains galore! I went to TN today to visit my little sis. Just about as soon as I hit TN, I found a Lowe's. I was too early for the consignment shop I like, so I swung into Lowe's to see what was on clearance.

There was a rack there that said "Distressed Plants, 25 cents". I found flats of beautiful sedum groundcovers--Dragons blood and two or three other varieties that I'm not familiar with. Well, at 25 cents each, I thought, I can landscape every bed I have with cheap plants. So I picked out 5 flats (about 60 4-inch pots) overflowing with sedums that did not look distressed at all to me! They were regularly priced 2.50, so what a steal, huh?

Then I breezed thru the store and found a beautiful pink canna I didn't have and I grabbed it. And then I spotted a 2 gallon pot of Hilo Beauty elephant ear. Had to have it at any cost.

I got up to the register, dripping with sweat and chattering to the young lady who came to check me out. I told her most of the plants came from the distressed plant rack and pointed to the flats. She said she'd just give me ALL of it for $6! I said, Wow, thanks! So she rang it up and gave me the total--5.83!! I asked, "Did you get the elephant ear?" Yes, she said. I said, "Really?" She said, "Yes, we really need to mark all that stuff way down." I asked if she got the canna, and again she said yes! So I got a 2 gallon pot of Hilo Beauty, a full quart pot of a pink canna, and 60 4-inch pots of various sedums--all for less than $6!!!!! I'm sure the ee's were $20, but she was convinced they should be clearanced. So who was I to argue. She worked there so she should know the inventory, right? I thought about getting more, but I was sure she'd realize her mistake, so I escape with my bargains while I could. You would do the same, right? LOL

Then I went to the consignment shop near there and bought 14 business dresses and evening/prom dresses for a total of $14. I have a small consignment shop myself and can easily resale these at a nice profit.

Then I picked up my sis and we went to the consignment shop she works at where I got 15 more dresses and business suits for $15 total. Sherry's boss will often offer me special sales when I come to town. So most of the stuff I resale comes from her shop.

Then we went to this wonderful home/garden decor outlet called Decor Direct. They have beautiful stuff, but by my standards, their prices are outrageous. However, they have wonderful sales--like 75% off and 90% off. And I finally got the wall fountain I've been wanting for the New Orleans terrace garden! It's a lion's head fountain about 2 ft tall. One similar, made of fiberglass, would cost me about $100 on Ebay. I found an identical one at Decor Direct today, made of CAST IRON, for $35!!!! It was $15 cheaper than the others they had because a small piece is broken off of it. However, I can touch it up with some paint and chances are, no one will notice. I didn't even notice. And I was inspecting it. My sis noticed it before we checked out. But it will be fine when I touch it up.

I also got a metal table I can hang on the wall and two metal shelves. They're all antiqued bronze just like the fountain. And I got these cute cast iron "leafy" pot stands. They look like palm trees or something. They actually stand only about 6 inches tall but they will be noticed.

Then we hit other nurseries. And I got a beautiful potfull of Green Shield elephant ears (with lots of little bulbs), 2 large variegated wiegelias, and 2 large foxtail ferns for less than half the price they are here in town.

OMG, I'm still reeling from all the bargains! Don't you wish you coulda gone with me? Here are pics of what you could have tried to wrestle away from me. LOL

Here are the 5 flats of sedum which cover the entire backseat of my van.

Here's the canna that lowe's labeled Angel Pink, but it doesn't look like the angel pink I got direct from a canna grower a few years ago. Wonder what it really is? Anyone know?

NancyAnn I want to know how you always end up with piles of plants no matter where you go? Yes I want to follow you around - to take the plants that cannot fit in the van! LOL Really - wonderful buys - now I am going to have to go to Lowes (and I hate going there) to see if their plants are on sale to... Mitch

Mitch, you just gotta get up this way sometime. My lowes always has something on clearance. And I can always find bargains and treasures in TN. I get my most exotic plants over there for very little. Take Blackie Potato vine, for example. $4 for a 4" pot with a tiny cutting in it here. Over there, I can get a FULL 4" pot for $1.25!

And these ee's I got over there, I could never find here. If I ordered them on Ebay, I'd get one teeny tiny plant for $5 plus $6 shipping--more than I paid for these big gallon pots with several plants in them. I've been hitting the nurseries in TN for about 4 yrs now. Come on up and I'll take you over there!

I might have to head that way, I am always in shock at the plants you pick up and for the prices! You all ready got me tearing my grass out after reading your dead lawn thread - not that I liked to mow any way but I never thought you could take it all out. Thanks for showing a newbie how to really garden - amazed.... Mitch

NancyAnn,

Would you like another EE? I don't know what it is, but they get huge! When the bed was cleared to put in something new one set was easily 5 1/2 feet. It's gone but now I have lots of babies coming up everywhere. These things are tough! I've done roundup on them 2-3 times and several are still dark green and growing right along. I can send them with the DL if you like.

DS and I found a very large bougainvillea this AM at Wal-Mart for $2. I'm glad you had so much fun.

What fantastic bargains you did get, NancyAnn. I can find bargains but not like that! The EE Green Shield is so healthy and huge. I'm just making a big puddle over here...lol.

Well, y'all, I headed to lowes here in town this a.m. for some organic humus. And you'd think by now I would know where to find it and not have to tour the whole garden center, but where's the fun in that? LOL

So, in my "quest" for the humus, somehow I ended up at the clearance rack at the back of the store. How'd that happen? (Some magnetic force always pulls me to these bargains!) There I found a couple of nice healthy Knockout Roses for $3 each. They hopped right in my cart! Imagine that! And then I found 2 one-gallon pots of lambs ears. I can get enough of the stuff. They were $1 each, so I told 'em to hop right in, along with a gallon pot of Autumn Fire sedum for $1.

Now, where's that humus? Could it be down the shrub aisle? Boy those smoke bushes look pretty, but they're $15, will wait til they're $1. LOL Maybe that humus is over here down the tropical aisle, ya think? Oh, now what's this? Looks like a distressed plant to me! The poor little Alocasia Wentii, all uprooted. I think it needs rescuing. Oh, and hey, over here is another just like it--uprooted and lonely looking.

At the register, I ask the clerk about Wentii, explaining that it's uprooted, as been a while, doesn't have any roots, hope I can revive it. He checks the price; it's 24.97 regularly. He calls the manager and explains to him that the plant is nearly dead (naahhhh, it has some dead leaves, true, but it has a nice firm bulb and several healthy leaves). He asks the manager what to clearance it to and the manager says, are you ready for this? THREE BUCKAROOS! I mentioned the pot behind him also containing Wentii uprooted and he let me have that one too for $3. Each pot contains TWO plants that are about 18 inches tall. I'm sure they'll be fine once they're put back in dirt. Nice additions to my elephant ear collection.

Yes, Lowes Knows. They know what I like and what I'm willing to pay. AND they left the gate open for me! How bout that for service? LOL

(Zone 9a)

Butterflychaser, do you happen to have any matching bridesmaids' dresses in your consignment shop? My daughter wants a coral or pink color for her wedding next June.

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

Fireant, no, I have no brides maid dresses. Sorry. Wish I could help.

can we call you "LUCKY"? lol

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

I think "dedicated scavenger" would more accurately apply. LOL But if you think the luck will rub off on ya, you're welcome to come visit a while. LOL
