Golgi--your teenage Blue Silk looks alot like Seiryu. Here's mine.
Morning Glorys # 8
Emma,Akatsuki No Tsuyu means "The Dew at Dawn"
QueenB,it does resemble yours. I don't what it is yet.I have Fujimusume,Blue Silk and Yamatoji in the same pot.Seeds purchased on e-bay so may or may not be as titled.
Ron is educating me [Thank you so much] . . .
on many of the blooms that I'm getting that I'm referring to as 'Crosses'.
I can't elaborate yet, because I don't know the right choice of words as Ron does,
but would like to share what I learn as a result.
Plus, I need to read over his notes to me several times and absorb all that he is explaining.
Many are reverting back to genes - sometimes 'way back there'.
What ever they are, they are so gorgeous -
especially when you see something entirely new that you've never seen bloom before,
as two I posted above.
Just amazes me!
This should be a great Thread to start this fall/winter, when we can't go out to play.
Emma
Gail, thanks for the translation of Akatsuki No Tsuyu.
Stacey just love your Seiryu. Very nice!
Sylvia, are your MG's getting enough sun?
Gosh, I hate that you aren't getting to enjoy blooms
from all that you have started.
EmmaGrace,
Will you save some seeds from your collection for me? Anything other than what I have (normal chocolate, Royal Robe, and Henka Asagao (blue with white rim)). I love them all, so any is fine. I have another Royal Robe (so far that's the only ID I got from our members) that's doing well, so I think I will have seeds to trade with you. I just want to make sure that you are not out of seeds when I have some to trade.
Thank you
~Eliza~
Eliza,
I'll be more than happy to save seeds for you.
I'll get with you a little later. Already getting many seeds,
but not all yet.
Emma
Hi Everyone,
Emma - I happen to like I.purpureas, and I'm especially fond of the lighter blue colors, the very(!) dark purple ones(especially the true double version) and the flaked colored strains...what I see causing confusion is alot of name and color duplication that does not have any real consistency,e.g.,Star of Yelta,Grandpa Ott's and President Tyler all look so(!) similar and if you look at the colors decribed by these names, the only consistencies seem to be the fact that they all look like the same flower being called by different names...Carmen and Kniowlas seem to be the same to me...Kniowlas did seem to start out as a darker color when it was first offered by Hudson, but then the color seems to have become less consistent and Carmen seems to be just a marketing name for a version of Kniowlas...
Thanks for the offer on the seeds Emma, but I've got the Akatsuki no Tsuyu(I've also seen this spelled as Tsiuyu)...although I may be interested in some other color variants or alleleic mutations that you have gotten...
A greenhouse is still on my wishlist and I only overwinter a very few select perennials at this point...;
QueenB and Golgi - The throat color on Gails flower looks to have a more definite fuschia to it and the outside tube is light fuschia...any shots of the outer tube of yours Stacey(?)...
Eliz - The flower you last posted 'looks like' a lighter colored version in between the Royal Robes I posted here
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/84452/
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/84502/
Closer to a lighter version of the second one...I first saw the The "Royal Robe" as it came out of the first batches of Burpee Sunrise Mix...it came out of a much darker Burgundy colored flower and RR produces a usually 'set pattern' of variations as I posted to the Database, but each succeeding generation can yield some further variants, and so although the RR has a certain consistent set of related patterns that it usually displays...the variations on the basic theme show what type of natural color mutations can and do occur from RR and so I view the RR as representing some basic patterns that can also be displayed in flowers with the same genes for those patterns and colors, but resultating from related, but still somewhat different parentage...
The Blue that Golgi had referred to as 'Henka' also has a certain set of patterns(some very similar to the RR) that it usually produces, but still with some different variations on the 'basic' theme being produced...So,having a definite knowledge of the actual parents is helpful, but, realistically, not always possible, when trying to positively identify a particular color and pattern, because the same colors and patterns can and do(!) originate from different parentage sharing similar genes...I know this is not as simplistic as people would like to hear, but it happens to be
the objective reality of the genetics involved with these types...The Japanese have been 'wrastlin' with this aspect for 'a long time'...
Take a look at this basic flower color pattern chart so generously provided on Dr.Yonedas site:
http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/PCD4764/htmls/11.html
http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/menu.html
(and this above link is to the main menu of the Morning Glories Database that I highly recommend for study of the different types and genetics involved,Please(!) look this site over thoroughly(!),and use it often(!) for a reference on various Morning Glories...)
The color pattern chart shows the basic color patterns that can come out of a number of seemingly different parents, but,in order to display the color pattern shown, the parents of different stock must share the related genes to produce the same or very similar pattern.
The Henka shown by Golgi could produce a color and pattern that looks like one of the most common(!) patterns produced by RR...in fact the flower that you have with the diluted blue star pattern could come out of seemingly very(!) different parents...if the genes for any(!) colors or patterns are present in the parents, they could show up,but with more or less frequency...
When trying to identify a plant whose parentage is unknown, then you must resort to other characteristics than just the flower, e.g., like leaf form, size of the various plant structures and any other characteristics that can give you a clue to the genetic 'jig-saw puzzle'...what the plant may produce if only self-fertilized(!) can also be very helpful...
Sometimes only a tentative identity can be arrived at,in which case a tentative ID is notated until further infornmation can be gleaned and a more 'precise' identity can be ascertained...I use the word precise with single quotation marks because so(!) many of the highly bred Japanese types can carry many of the same genes for producing the same colors and more especially the patterns as shown on Dr.Yonedas authoritative site...;
To answer the question as to what your flower is...it could have descended from a RR parent,a 'blue henka' parent or anything(!) that was carrying the right gene combination to produce it...
A 'rough' tentative ID is the closest I feel comfortable offering...and that is it looks like a lighter version of the Royal Robe,but it could very well have had other parentage as the colors and pattern are relatively common in Japanese Morning Glory genetics...;
I like it no matter who(!) its' parents were...'Tinker,Tailor,Soldier Sailor' and so on ...
Just look(!) at the Power and Beauty in these Morning Glories (and some people say there is no God!! HAH!!...)
These two links are from the Dr.Yoneda mirror site, but tends to show more English translations than the protist site ..

'Check it out'...
Lvsgrtdanes, the blue of "blue dawn" is electric. I love it,and am thrilled to see it blooming in PA. It inspires me,here in Ohio....maybe next year.........!
Well, the much needed rain destroyed all mine today except my dwarf. My Mt Fuji's finally are starting to shows signs of buds, too :) *Happy dance*
The chicken wire dome is doing great too... its getting covered, and ther are vines on each side taht have buds all the way to the top of the vine :)
Here is my submission for today.
My Blue Silk was blooming as well, but I forgot to take a picture of it. My 2 pots of Akathoukinoumi both just withered up and died before blooming. They are so beautiful that I'm just ill. Hopefully, I can trade seeds with someone later.
Well that's a nice greeting on your special day ~ Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday, Minigrannie :-)
Happy Birthday :)
Janis
When I got home from work today, (around 6:30 pm), to my surprise, one flower (the only one on this plant) is still blooming (chocolate color with white rim). The two Royal Robe that bloomed this morning were already closed. The chocolate and the Royal Robe are in two different pots, but in the same location. I will have to pay attention to what time the sun gets to the pot.
It would be nice to see blooms after a long day at work.
Kate wonderful shots and neat flowers thanks for sharing
Everyone has such gorgeous MG's!!! I just have to drool over everyone elses...lol! EmmaGrace, I luv, luv, luv your Fujishibori!!! Think of me when you have seeds to trade.
:) Donna
