Morning Glorys # 8

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I am going to take a break from gardening for awhile and I hope you all don't mind. The weather is so hot and miserable I couldn't think of a better time to do this. I had a back injury some time ago and it is really getting the best of me. I am not sure what the dr's are going to do at this point but surgery is an option. So I hope to not be gone to long.

In the meantime I have asked EmmaGrace to take over the task of keeping up with this thread. She will start the new threads and offer the enthusiam and support I have not been able to do lately.
So with that I will sign off for now and I hope to see you all in the fall.....
Emma if you need help...............your on your own...............LOL
She is a sweetheart and I know she will do you all proud....
Happy gardening...........and I leave you with a close up of my Favorite....."Chocolate Silk"...

Tazzy, it looks like your dark one is a 'Yojiro' MG called 'Maisugata', and your rose one 'Rose Silk'. Both are very lovely!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Hey QueenB, thanks for the invite. I've posted this is another forum but thought I share it here too.

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

the Maisugata is so beautiful. That will be in my wish list.

Thanks for sharing

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Hi Moby, save me a few seeds of Maisugata if you have any extras. I will save you some Asuka if you want any and I have enough. I have a few more varieties that have not bloomed yet.

Susa

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Me too, Susan. I got them started early enough but was late getting them in the ground. Still waiting on Aogakiyama and Tancho.

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Well all,I'm living vicariously through you and your morning glories.Really poor showing in my garden, this year.I have a couple of pics from this morning... is this a teenage Blue Silk?

And here is Akathoukinoumi looking suspiciously like Heavenly Blue(although the white throat is a bit larger)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

golgi - Wow. . . your Akathoukinoumi is incredible.
Would LOVE to have seeds of this one, if you get enough to share.
The one you are calling Teenage Blue Silk, can't be Blue Silk because it has the Fuchsia Throat, rather than White.
Could possibly be a cross from some that you are calling Henka.
It is Beautiful!

Moby and tazzy your photos are all Gorgeous!

Moby, I am looking forward to seeing photos of your
Aogakiyama and Tancho.

I think it might be an early Fujimusume,...I have that planted in that pot too.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Dee, I sure hate to hear that you are having back problems. It seems as if all my good gardening friends are suffering either with their backs, knees or feet this year. Sure hope you feel better soon and don't have to have surgery.

Very nice, Gail, aren't they awesome??

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Gail,
Your Blue Silks are beautiful.
Like Joseph said, Now I see what all the fuss is about this JMG.

Mine are putting on a show as well. Had 6-Blooms today.

Here is photo of two of them

Gail,
This is from your Henka Blue with Star.
Have any of yours bloomed this way,
or did I maybe get a seed ID'd wrong?
Looks like Hatsu Arashi to me.

And another Photo

The color is a Royal Blue with slight Pink Halo at Throat fading to White

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Yep,Emma, looks like one of my Hatsu Arashi seeds snuck in with the Henkas. Sorry!

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Seems that this year,I have had to help alot of the JMG open. They aren't opening fully or they tear and the heat is wilting them before they reach full glory.Hope it cools off soon, cuz this is OHIO-not TEXAS for heaven's sake!!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Gail, you are hilarious.
Texas IS hot now. It's a huge job keeping everything watered.
Heck, I didn't go to all of this trouble not to get seeds....
I too am having lots of problems with blooms tearing and wilting too soon.
No problem with the Hatsu Arashi, my vines are dying back now, so will have fresh new blooms.

This photo is one I need help with an ID if anyone can.
Color is Royal Purple with Lavender-Fuchsia Halo at Throat with Dark Plum Star
Purchased seeds on eBay and is 'supposed' to be Heian No Izumi - NOT! It is definitely I. purpurea with Heart-Shaped Leaves.
At least it is pretty!

One of my Fujishibori blooms from this morning

Thumbnail by EmmaGrace
Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

This vine is throwing all kinds of neat blooms.
It is a cross that I grew from last year that crossed again,
and all of the blooms are amazing. This vine is only
one of a couple that all of the blooms are not the same.

This one is UNIQUE!
A Bright Pink, almost Hot Pink with Silky Pink Streaks
that are Glisteney with Sparkling Particles like Rose Silk
[learned those words from Ron] *-*

Thumbnail by EmmaGrace
Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Another UNIQUE - that just appeared from no where.
This too is a cross from last year that crossed again,
and the blooms on this vine are not all the same.
This one is
A Pale Rosy-Pink with Rose-Red Streaks with Pink Halo & Star and Pink Halo fading to White

Thumbnail by EmmaGrace
Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Oh Emma the last one is LOVELY.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

And another photo of one of my new Crosses
'Mauve Frost'. Just love these blooms.
Need to do some hand pollinating on these
[per Ron's detailed and appreciated instructions]
to see if they will hopefully grow back 'True' next year.

Thumbnail by EmmaGrace
San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Emma, that Mauve Frost is gorgeous. I can't seem to get more than one bloom at a time on anything. The only ones that seem to keep on blooming are the blue SunSmile ones. My pink SunSmile have not put on one bloom yet.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

I call that I.purpurea 'purple with a burgundy star' but I'm sure alot of other people will call it 'Star of Yelta,Grandpa Ott's,Carmen,President Tyler and all the other quasi-official 'purp' names that don't seem to really have much of a very distict difference to them...but it's a free country with freedom of speach and alot of different purpurea names all referring to the same basic flower to prove it...I'm still waiting for the 'votes' to come in on the Akatsuki no Tsuyu and the Blue Silk to see if people think they are the same or not...

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Ron,
I agree that there are many of the Purple I. purpureas that look soooooo much alike. However, this one I've never grown with these colors. I'm not too much on I. purpureas, but a few I do like.

Wonder what Akatsuki No Tsuyu means translated.
I'm waiting on seeds that I bought on eBay.
Thinking about getting one started to see if I can hopefully get blooms before our first frost.

Ron, do you have a greenhouse - or a way to over-winter your MG's?
If you do, I'll be happy to send you a couple seeds of Akatsuki No Tsuyu.

Emma

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Emma, your little I.purpurea is very common in my yard.I'm constantly pulling it up so it doesn't strangle the I.Nils. It's pretty but pretty invasive, too. My daughters car sat in the same spot for two days and when she went out one morning to go to work, one had wrapped around her bumper.Grew right out of the hard packed gravel that dandelions don' even survive in.
