Canna Seeds Sprouting

Vansant, VA(Zone 6a)

Hello everyone,
This past winter I didn't dig my cannas, to make a long story short, they all froze and died. I tilled up the ground where I had them planted. Now there are around 50 small cannas coming up out of the ground. Not sure what kind they are but I hope they are different colors. I also have sown some extra seeds I had saved over the years and around 70 of them have sprouted. Maybe I'll get lucky and get back most of what I lost. Any one else grew cannas from seeds?
Happy Gardening!!!

Hello,
Just checked my canna seeds today. I had 21 new ones coming through the ground. The ones I didn't plant are doing better than the ones I did plant.

teentitan, when do you harvest the seeds from cannas? Do you wait until the whole thing turns brown and dried up? I suppose you should break up the seed pod when they are brown, right?? I want to send some seeds off to some friends and I want to be sure to get it right. Any info will be helpful. THanks, Lisa

HI I have grown canna from seeds before. They were from red cannas and the ones from seeds came up pink, they were also slightly smaller than the parents.
Lisa, I waited until the seed pods were dry and brown.
Correct and the seeds need to have stratification to spout.

Lisa,
I usually collect canna seeds in the fall after the seed pods have turned brown and the seeds inside are black and hard. I take a pair of large finger nail clippers and I clip a small piece of the seed off until I see white. Then I soak them for a few days and then plant them in soil. I've had pretty good luck with this method. The ones that are in my garden just decided to sprout on their own.

My Grandma used them as beads, How long does it take to get flowers from seeds? I have saved the seeds for years to make a long double drop necklace, now I'm thinking I'll plant them.

Looking for touch-me-not seeds, for a friend of mine, can anyone out there help?

Will trade other seeds come fall, like Black eyed susan's and zinnia's.

Thanks
Bird
