Coffee and...Part 22...! :-D

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Hi and WELCOME (and/or Welcome BACK!) This is session #22.

Here's my usual message...
"Our door is *always* open to anyone who cares to drop in and sit a spell, If you have any special goodies to share, just put 'em on the counter with the rest of our absolutely, positively, NO-cal supply! We'd Love to taste them! :-)"

Here's the link to our last session:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/526683/

We're beginning to get into the harvesting and preserving of the goodies being produced in out veggie garden now. I have Okra, Zuchinni, bell peppers, tomatoes now...I've already gotten the Broco-lee in (Why is it that I can't spell that after Zooks? hehehe Can't remember EITHER of them unless it's for a grocery list! :-D)

Julie, didn't think that you meant that you didn't love DGD. I know what you mean about wearing out DGM. I think God knew what he was doing when he gave the ability to give birth to younger women.!!LOL I can't imagine these 40-50 somethings beginning to raise a family. It has it's merits of course, like being settled, maturity, over the phase of "sowing wild oats" etc, but do they really know what they are getting into?

Well I have several chores today. First I am going out to weed, then when the fog lifts (yes fog) don't know where that came from, but am going to DM's to paint her front porch. Went and prepped it last night, so I can begin painting right away.

DGD (age 9) gave my husband's 5month old beagle a bath in the utility room sink. Not a laundry tub, mind you, but a vanity type sink. The dog weighs approximately 20 pounds, and this was his first bath. Can you picture the mess? I had water and dog shampoo all over the floor, plus, my walls were soaked, where he shook the water off. I cleaned this last night about 10:30. She says that today she is giving the other one a bath. So I will have to find a suitable outside container to do that one in!!, Well off to weed.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Bonnie...I honestly knew what you meant...I just didn't want anyone to think that I was a "bad" granny. LOL

IT'S RAINING HERE!!! HOORAY!!! Of course it had to start out with 1/2" hail...but when it started I could have cared less if I ended up with damaged plants...at least they were ALL getting a drink at the same time. :-) I think the rain gauge is reading right around the 1/2" mark...and that's a half an inch I don't have to pull from the well. (What a relief!)

Well...I'm off to look at the pictures I took of the rain dripping off the roof. hehehe (You know, just in case this is the last of the wet stuff I see until the snow flies. hehehe)

Good Morning everyone!! Getting hotter here again....but we had a nice rain on Sat, so things should be fine for a couple of days.

I'm sitting at the computer with a plastic bag over my head - highlighting the hair today. Hope it turns out ok and not all white (I've had that happen!) I know I should have gone to the hairdresser, but I couldn't see paying 100 bucks..I'm cheap when it comes to things like that. Have a hair appointment next week for a cut, so if I muff it up too much, I will just chop it off. We have the 'wedding' on the 30th, so I want to look half way nice.

Opps = timer just went off - now i get to see the wondrous new color I have - life is always a surprise at our house!!

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

LOL...can't wait to see how it turns out! I have mine (mostly all grey) colored Light Ash Blond. The sun fades it out to almost white in about a week. My DD picked up my color last time and got Extra Light Ash Blond. When I took the towel off it was the exact same color as I had!
Pati

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Oh Pati, that _IS funny.

I did my own hair coloring for years... waaay back I used a product called HAPPINES, just cause it tickled me to buy happiness in a box for so little money.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Highlighting was a success!!! I look 10 yrs younger (LOL) and man does a little abuse to the hair make it much more manageable!

Got a burst of cleaning going on - doing the windows right now Just taking a break until DH comes home. I will start working about 2 min before he comes home - works every time!!! Windows haven't been done for two years and I could hardly see outta them! Even doing the screens. They really need to be replaced as our cat has clawed them for our attention!

Just got a call from the wife of my 2nd cousin (who we see once a year) asking if we could come this weekend and help paint their new house. Thank goodness we are going camping!! The weather is supposed to be in the 90s - and I hate to paint!! I did tell her that in two weeks when all our wedding junk is over, I will give her a call and will help - hopefully it will all be done! She is a real young chick, with a laugh that about drives you crazy, but I do like both of them. She is PG and cannot do much. The only excuse I have is that I am old and overweight! Wonder if that counts...

Patti - good story - I wonder what I will use when I am all gray - reverse color?? Add back in the brown streaks?

"Happiness" - good name for a color= we all could use a dose of that!

Oh, I did finish weeding the garden. With all the work I have gotten done, I'[ll probably be confined to a chair tomorrow...gotta boogie, back to work...

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Okay, Folks... here's a Sweet to share. Not pretty, but authentic and made from scratch (even the graham cracker crust)... Key Lime Pie!

Thumbnail by darius
Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Out in the garden pulling weeds, setting posts and trying to get things cleaned up.
Darius, that pie looks delicious. I've never even tasted an imitation Key Lime Pie much less an authentic one. With the 3 dozen eggs I got on sale yesterday maybe I should try one- if there are any key limes around. How many does it take to make a pie??
Sarv,Blooms, Patti etc. You have empowered me to go out and find a new hair-color, but alas and alak, I couldn't find Nude anywhere, and I hit ALL the local lumber yards too!

Thumbnail by balvenie
Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Darius, that looks wonderful, if I liked Key Lime Pie, my mouth would be watering and my stomach would be growling.............oh my stomach is growling.

You're making me hungry here!

Molly
:^)))

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Balvenie, 2/3 cup of fresh juice although recipes vary from 2/3 to 3/4 cup. My first pkg. of 2 pounds of of key limes netted 1 cup of juice... but only with a citrus reamer. Otherwise I'd have had maybe 1/2 to 2/3 cup. You can buy bottled Key Lime juce.

Yes, the recipe needs eggs, 3-4. Plus sweetened condensed milk.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

oh that pie looks delish!! I just hopped on the scale and can't have a bite until I weigh in tomorrow at the docs. Then look out!!!

Bal - how about some black spray paint? My hair is thinning so, I shall soon look somewhat like you.

We just had a nice rain - downpour, but not an awful one. I could just see my plants lapping it up. I do need to get out and put some more slug pellets out.

Some of my plants look awful pale - light green. Any hints on what I should dose them with?? It's certainly not too much water, but I hesitate to try stuff, as I burned a bunch last year feeding with fertilizer. (too much?)

Taking care of DGS on Thur, Fri and Monday. Babysitter announced this morning that she was taking a trip. Man, how do people do it when they don't have a grandma near? I remember those days - they were nightmares to me.

I just looked at my heels and they are a sea of massive cracks. It is almost as bad as in the winter. I am always jealous when I look at my friends heels and they are so smooth. What in the world am I NOT doing right?

Hold that pie for me= I really need a big piece....

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Sarv,

I think we talked about this last night in chat. Your friend probably doesn't go barefoot in the garden. She probably has nice nails and hair because she doesn't pull weeds or work up a sweat. And if that is so, she doesn't get near the satisfaction of suffering through the rough chapped heels, broken nails and mussy hair that we do through our efforts and love of gardening.

Molly

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, have been very busy today. Went out this morning and pulled weeds from all my flower beds. (except one) maybe hit that one tomorrow. Then went to DM and painted her front porch. Take into consideration that it was 96 today with a heat index of 104. Well, I was drenched when I got done. I ended up showering 3 times and changing clothes that many. This is after I had given my DGD a lecture on changing clothes so many times a day!!. She does it for the heck of it, I do it out of necessity!! Anyway, I end up doing laundry every day when she is here. Taking DM to doctor tomorrow. She got bit by brown recluse spider and he wants to check on it. Need to highlight my hair also. Do the color myself, only go to hairdresser to get it cut. My DS is a barber/stylist, who lives 1/4 mile up the road, but getting him to cut it when it needs it is another story. Remember the cobbler's kids who had no shoes. I paid for his training, and still can't get a haircut!! Oh well everyone have a good night.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

I'm a tightwad in the hair color dept too...in fact, I don't even know what my real color is except icky brown with a lot of gray in it but not enough to throw in the towel and quit coloring. I tried something different last time, and it was too ashy, so I redid it the next day which you aren't supposed to do. Anyone recall me saying I gave up perms? I must have been delusional, went and got one yesterday and the results are not what I had hoped. I look like Shirley Temple on steroids. I'm hoping it will relax a bit, but since that's not worked in the past it looks like I'm in for a haircut. Sigh. Will I ever leave well enough alone? Don't answer that.

Luscious looking pie, Darius. I've never had key lime pie either, but I could make a lemon meringue vanish in no time at all, so key lime won't be a challenge. Slice me a BIG piece!
Then I'll have chocolate cake for dessert!

Gee Robert, I thought you'd grown a giant pink tomato. Friend of mine who is similarly blessed with a high forehead, says, you can use your hormones for growing hair if you like, but he prefers to keep them in reserve for other purposes.

We had a real downpour around noon, but it only lasted an hour and then it all cleared up and got hot again. Supposed to rain tomorrow, so that would be a bonus. I'm deathly sick of watering.

Had the swiss chard I picked the other day for dinner tonight. DH likes it better than spinach. Had spaghetti, and meat balls for dinner, as we've been salad=ing for days because of the heat and I was suffering from tomato sauce withdrawal. Turned out delicious, although it would probably choke him to compliment me for making it.

Son and DIL back from Oregon, raving about how beautiful the coast is, wants everybody to move there with them. I don't think the Oregoners (ites? eans? ) want an influx of new people, as unemployment there is terribly high. Pictures were lovely. They can go. Just thinking of packing up all this accumulated
...uhhh. ....treasure (?) gives me the heebiejeebies.

Invited over to paint their house??? How thoughtful. I'd have gone camping too, even though I hate camping....just to avoid painting. Not my favorite passtime. I don't mind the actual painting, it's all the prep work, and then the clean up that's not fun. Speaking of not fun, I have to go find some cement patch and fix that crack alongside the front steps where the yellow jackets have apparently made themselves a cozy home. I've Raided it a few times but it hasn't done the job, so I need to fill up the hole. Tried Redicrete but it's got too many big stones in it. They didn't like that either. I'm getting very good at being prepared to sprint.....

Have a great evening..

Hello, it's late and getting my bedtime but I thought I would catch up on what all of you have been doing and have a little snack. The pie looks delicious!!

Hair coloring, well, I can't be bothered with that or nail jobs or jewelry, but then I hate to dress up and all of that stuff goes together. My MIL did that hair color stuff and was never pleased with the results so I wondered why she kept doing it. Then she would go get a haircut and wasn't pleased with that either. I used to give her home permanents and guess what? she wasn't happy with that either so I finally was always doing something else when she wanted a perm. Then she would do the job herself and.......... I guess you can tell that she wasn't happy with anything. Clothes shopping was the same thing. She had a closet full of clothes that she wouldn't wear but "might need someday when hard times come". Living through the depression did something to her thinking that she never got over. You all probably know people like that, always expecting it to happen again.

Robert, from the looks of your sparsely populated head I would say you would be happy with any color! We had a friend who was slick as a billard ball and he knew more bald jokes than anybody I ever heard. One of his best was that God liked his face so much He was clearing off a spot for another one. Also, he said they don't put marble tops on cheap furniture.

Today was another hot and sunny one. I worked in the vegie garden awhile this morning and then took a horseback ride. Patch is such a good boy, he is a real pleasure to ride. I relax and just have a good time up there. We went out a few miles into the hills, didn't see any deer and no rattlesnakes either.

My bug bites are really itchy! They've make big red welts, and no, I haven't been scratching them. Just having my clothes rub on them is enough to keep them stirred up. Cortizone cream only helped for about a half hour. I'm taking antihistamine every 4 hours to try to tone down the itches but so far it isn't doing anything but make me sleepy. I sit with an ice bag against the worst one and that feels really good for a while. Every time I sit down for a few minutes I find myself falling asleep, so I think I'll call it a day and crawl into bed.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Aha!! First one up gets to make breakfast. Let's have waffles, I'll get out my mom's vintage waffle iron that still makes the best ones I ever tasted, and some nice raspberry syrup that was supposed to be jelly, and for those who like to indulge, some fresh fruit and whipped cream! Come on, the coffee's hot, and the sun is up!! And we had another sprinkle of rain last night!! I'm a happy gardener today!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

I'll take a plate of waffles!!! Haven't had homemade ones in years - I fine the eggo ones too convenient.

Didn't sleep worth a toot last night. I had a terrible pain in the right side of my chest - washed windows yesterday - that'll teach me not to do that for awhile!!

DGS is spending the day with me. I need to truck him over to DS (his uncle) to watch him while I go to the doc. I asked DS if he would come our way, but no dice. He's the same one we floated a loan for a new boat and I bought a 5 day new fangled dangled cooler for him. Seems like this is a one way street to giving. I was in a snit when he refused, but decided to get over it. DGS had to come over earlier than planned so I can do the road trip stuff and still be on time at the docs. Oh, I was in such a state going to the doc, that I got up and took a xanax!! I need to ask the doc for a refill....kinda embarassed to do that!!

Need to shop and pack for another camping trip for this weekend. DGS wants to come with us, but I think I deserve a solo trip..

Molly, you're right, my friends with the smooth heels, long clean nails and perfect hair - don't garden! They live in condos (with manicured- weedless (but flowerless) lawns) They just don't understand my fascination with growing things!! But let me tell ya, their houses are immaculate while mine is always a complete disaster!!

Gotta go get on the road - keep me in mind at the doc - I am a real weinnie....

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Remember Me? I'm back. Had a better than wonderful time at DD and her garden walk....will be posting pictures on another thread when I get my desk back in order. (How do I get all this crap in one week?)

I have missed all; you are all such a part of my life now. It's amazing....my new friends and family, you.

My garden is a mess, and I have some DGers coming tomorrow to see. There are 4 of us that are meeting every-so-often and it's my turn. Not good planning on my part seeng that I was gone for a week. I have every weed thriving that had seeds in the Ft. Lauderdale area....LOL Oh well....such is life.

Glad to see all is well, and not much changed...Life is such an on-going saga....

Chat later, have to get out and try to make things presentable.....sorta..

Hap

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Welcome back, Hap. Be sure to tell us where you post those pictures. And at least you have an excuse for the weeds since you've been gone. You need one of those signs that says "don't just stand there, pull weeds". Who is coming to visit? Anybody we know?

M5, I had some lilies like yours once but now they seem to have hybridized with something nearby and have lost their bright color and spots. They're still pretty but I need to get some of the original ones again when they get into the stores this fall. Anybody remember the name of them? Stargazer maybe?

My itchy bites are not quite so itchy this morning. I think maybe so many hours in the sun yesterday got them stirred up more than usual, plus the fact that there are 5 of them. Most people don't react like this to bug bites. My husband keeps telling me the bugs have good taste, so I should smear myself with something that will make them go elsewhere for dinner.

This morning I will get more weeding done in the vegie garden before the sun gets hot. We are supposeed to get to about 95 today. Maybe I should do something desperate like clean house?

Gotta get moving now. See ya.

Thumbnail by MaryE
waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

OH pleeeeeze don't start cleaning house, it might be contagious!! Yes, I bought that as a stargazer but it has taken three years for it to actually produce blooms! I'm quite happy with it this year, but for a while I was thinking of relocating it. There's another lily of some kind struggling up through the bleeding heart near the bedroom windows but I can't tell what it is, yet, until and if it blooms.

Don't those itchies just make you insane? I get huge welts from mosquito bites, and head for the lanacaine spray which helps in my case. Only good thing about this drought is the lack of standing water for hatching mosquitos.

Glad to see you back Hap, good planning, grow weeds, invite guests. They won't see as many weeds as you do though. Be sure to give us a link to the photos. Had to go pick up a couple more tomato cages yesterday. Some of my little pear tomatos decided to self seed, so they need propping up. They need a good pruning, they are too prolific and we can't keep up with them, or give enough away. Wonder if I could pickle them?

Hair still looks like I stuck my finger in the light socket. One more wash and then it's off for a scissor intervention.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Back from the doc!!!! Cholesterol is ok (wonders of wonders), BP normal, thryoid will need treatment in a few years (doc says) She didn't mention my lard arse either LOL or my weight. Put me on steroids for my sore arm and some different meds for my clicky fingers. If they to the trick = I will be in hog heaven~~

Hot, humid stuff has returned....yuck. AC needs to go back on. I need to get busy deadheading. On my way home I noticed local greenhouse had flats for $2 - didn't stop, but may need to later on. I had a bunch of stuff croak in some of my pots and they look pretty sad.

Just had a candy bar (had to take meds with food LOL) so off I go!

Welcome back Hap...

I'm steeping some Vinegar of the Four Thieves, a great insect repellant. It will be ready to bottle in 10 more days and then I'll list it for sale in my member store.

MaryE, stop by a health food store and get some Rescue Remedy Cream. It's great for any skin irritation, esp. bug bites. I swear by it!

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi everybody!!. Just now getting around to checking out this thread. Had to take DM to Dr today, a follow-up on the brown recluse spider bite. He pronounced it about healed. It does look better. Then on the grocery. Don't you just hate that. It's all that handling, take it off the shelf, into cart, take out of cart to check out counter, back in cart to the car, from cart to car, then home, from car to house, then getting it in the right place. I wish there was someplace that took phone orders and delivered.LOL If DH would shop, I wouldn't mind the cooking. Last night, (after the sun went down and it cooled off some) I moved some plants that weren't doing well. Checked on them awhile ago, boy they sure look stressed. Hope they make it.

Sarv, someone invited you to come paint? Gee, I don't need friends or relatives like that. I have heard of painting parties, but that ususally involves young folks and kegs of beer. Don't know what the paint jobs look like, but the beer would take the tedium out of the job.LOL. BTW, good doc report.

Welcome back Happy !! Where ya been?

The discussion about hair coloring and highlighting gave me inspiration. I purchased hair highlighting kit today. I usually color my hair, but have been busy and have let it go. Therefore more gray is showing. So this time I will highlight instead of coloring. DGD wants highlights too, so with permission from mom, plan to do that tonight. Don't come near me with a perm, and no one will get hurt. Last one I got was horrid. Finally has grown out. Why do I get these crazy ideas at night? Lack of something to do?

Darius, the Vinegar of the Four Thieves has taken care of my dog's fleas. I just use it about every 3-4 days. Then bathe him about every 2 weeks and start over. Well about time to start thinking of cooking supper. Will catch you all later.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Thanks on the vinegar feedback, Bonnie! I'm steeping some now to sell.

Vinegar of four thieves- what a name....did someone steal the receipe???

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Nope, Four Thieves who had to bury folks in the plague survived by this concoction of herbs.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Dcat, I go through the same routine with DH. "Honey, will you bring in the big tubs of cat litter from the car?" After all, I took it off the shelf, put it in the cart, etc. exactly like you said! He usually does it but once in a while I have to remind him that I already lifted the two 28 lb buckets 4 times each, which is close to 200 lbs. And I schlep the rest of the groceries myself. I'd like home delivery too, and it would cut down tremendously on impulse purchases. But then I'd really have to make a list, and not get reminded of things I need by cruising the aisles. And there goes my exercise program.

Knockknock ... I've been lurking hhere today, and have had several chuckles. I've never heard those sayings about bald heads. The DH always says ... some folks turns gray and some folks just turn loose. I don't know what he's grumbling about. Got a full head of hair. Now me, well, that's a different story. Fine and thin. Instead of him, I have the receding hairline. *smile* Darius, the vinegar sounds interesting. I didn't know you had a web site. I just keep learning things around here. Thanks for letting me drop in. Y'all are just tooo funny!

Oh Blooms, I can certainly feel for you. We remodeled last year. Tore the bathroom out ... floor and walls. Tore out the tub enclosure and put in new tub and tile. Had wall paper on the walls. Ugg. Had it in the hall and kitchen. Got rid of all that. Painted inside and put down new carpet and kitchen floor. The whole house was a wreck! I'm fortunate that the DH can do most of the work, but it takes time and patience. Good luck!

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

The "Florida Grocery Store" Publix, started an on line shopping program about 3 years ago. The bought box style trucks with refridgeration units in them, hired drivers etc. I was so excited! I was in on that one the first week they were open and I used them every month for the next year, until they shut it down.

I hate grocery shopping, it takes too much time, and too much exposure to the "elements" of society.

Ordering on line really cut back on the impulse buying. Once I got my main shopping list down, all I had to do was return to my usual list and click on the items, choose how many and at the end of each page click on add to cart. You could even buy beer and wine as long as someone over 21 was at home to accept delivery.

I could order my groceries and set delievery up for the next day with a delivery slot of 1 hour.

When they announced that they weren't doing it anymore, their notice was "effective immediately". Well it was time for me to shop, and I was so depressed. I hated the store closest to the house because it was so dirty and the selections were not the greatest. I had to find a Publix that was cleaner and bigger. I have never missed anything so much as the home deliveries.

Since I moved, there is a new Publix a few blocks from here. It is a high rise by downtown. Parking is on the second floor, there are people/cart movers like they have at the airports. They even have valet parking there. So now I almost enjoy shopping.

Molly
:^)))

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Oh My God, valet parking and people movers, I would think I was in heaven!! Well DGD and I did the highlight thing last night. Turned out real good. DGD wasn't sure about hers last night, but this morning, likes it real well. I got out early this morning and did some weeding. Had about 3/10 inch rain during the night, so it made it easier to pull them. Cut back all my petunias, as they were "leggy". Fertilized them, so they should begin a new cycle. It is almost painful for me to do that, as I have raised them from seed. It's almost like chopping off a childs arm!! DH keeps fishing every day. Pretty soon will have to buy another freezer to put them in. We already have one freezer dedicated to his catches, and he is using another one for the overflow. That is another job I have to do this morning, is freeze some. I have a vacuum sealer so it isn't too bad. He used to put them in freezer bags and then add water. That was until I had to defrost the freezer, and I had about 6 inches of ice in the bottom where the bags had leaked. Talk about a job. It is a chest freezer, and I ended up getting inside (as I am vertically challenged) to get all the ice out. Didn't think about the possibility of the lid closing until later. We are planning a fish fry September 10, inviting about 100 people, so that will eliminate a lot of the fish. Going to DM to use round up on a flower bed. It is completely overgrown, so I am going to completely kill it out and start over. Well, back out before it gets too hot. They have issued a heat advisory for the next 3 days, so will have to be careful.

Molly, what an interesting tale about grocery shopping! I both hate and love to grocery shop. I HATE it when the stores are scant in the variety they carry, and I absolutely LOVE it when I can find a store that has all kinds of goodies I cannot find elsewhere. Of course, I now do a lot of online shopping which gives me access to things NO single store would ever carry.

Bonnie... I can just SEE you now inside that chest freezer chipping away the ice later! DO watch out for the lid, though. I don't think Frozen Bonnie is on any menu I have ever seen.
