Seed Snatchin' XII...Snatchin' Bunnies

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

OK, this is a continuation of Seed Snatchin' XI: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/518298/#new I thought I'd post a picture of one of the City of Seward beds along the beach front. I sold them the bedding plants, and we foolishly decided to put ornamental cabbage in these beds. We overlooked the fact that somebody has freed their domestic rabbits in that neighborhood. They snatched all the cabbage, then dug up the other plants and strewed them around. These little fellows obviously give snatchin' a bad name. Bad, bad bunnies!

just caught up with the new thread (after catching up on the old one.) no snatching lately here, injured my hand july 3rd, had surgery the 8th. not a good idea to detach the ligamemnt that connects all your arm together! no more volleyvall for me for a while LOL

still trying to keep the garden going, but won't be tsking any pictures, btw, 8ft, your tyard is perfectly gorgeous!

TamaraFaye, sorry to hear about your accident! One handed gardening is not much fun, and it's just darn hard to snatch with one hand! Hope your recovery is swift.

I need to report (confess) a new snatch today: Went to a nursery just to pass the time (and a little money) and they had a nice border of perennials, some of which had gone to seed. So I snatched a seedhead from a poppy (named Bread..somethingorother), and a gazillion seeds from a tall foxglove that I suspect is Digitalis ferruginea, and some seeds from a white primrose. Then I spent money, so I feel fine about it.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

ya'll are so fun... glad I found my way back.

Tamara I think I goofed with the squash. They're in big containers out front and starting to do the big leaf running squash thing. Guess I'll let them run and they can hide weeds. :)

Yo, Weez - I think it was the weather channel tonight said something about an anniversary coming up when an earthquake and 2 tsunamis hit Seward. Ackkk! That registers on my mental map. I don't know how long ago but was it before your time?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Tamara! I am so sorry!!! Was that your snatchin' hand! You better start practicing with the other one! Hope you get better soon!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, Tamera, how awful! I hope your recovery is swift & uneventful.

Here's one of the snatchin' bunnies in my yard. If he sticks to eating the clover, he & I will be OK. LOL!

What a cutie! Oh he looks just like Peter Rabbit ! Hope he doesn't act like him!

Hey, where is everybody? Just got in. DH & I went fishing at a friends farm pond, and another friend lives next door. Walked over to see her daylilies, she has about an acre, nobody was home, but snatched several day lily seeds. I'm sure she won't mind and I will probably confess to her. Heck, she is so generous, that if I really admired something, she would probably dig it up and give it to me. It's just the thrill of snatchin that I enjoy. Having never tried saving day lily seeds, now somebody tell me what to do with them. LOL.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

There's a method for sprouting daylily seeds in jars with a little peroxide water... http://daylily6.tripod.com/Step_1.html

However, PoppySue, who kindly sent me daylily seeds last winter, says she has tried this method, and it did not work any better for her than what she usually does, which is to soak them in water (or peroxide water, 1Tbsp. 3% Hydrogen Peroxide per quart of water) until they plump, then put them in moist potting soil. I sowed her seeds in a 48 cell flat and ended up with over 3 dozen little seedlings to plant out.

My baby daylilies are doing well, too! They've stopped looking quite so much like sprigs of grass, making it "safer" to weed the new daff & daylily bed...

Put daylilly seeds in the refridgerator for 6 weeks then plant in potting soil. Bottom water with hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. Take about 3-4 weeks to germinate at room temps.

Went over to a friend's house to do some pruning for her. Her neighbor had several varieties of beautiful annual poppies - double flowered lavender and purple, plus some with fringed edges. Snatched a seedpod from each.

Anyone know how to germinate begonia seeds? I don't know much about them, but I have one I 'snatched' from the jaws of death at Lowes for .50 earlier this season. It has flowers that look like little flat orchids and pointy leaves. I had some in a budvase, and it has produced seeds for me. The rest of the plant is in a pot and is doing well. Any tricks to growing these seeds?

Also, for all you coleus lovers, I totally snatched a broken off part of a coleus at HD and have it in a vase with water. Can I root this? (or rather, can it be rooted by a rooting failure?)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Oh Pixy Coleus is easy to root! Even I can do it!! :) I root mine in water too! I have several varieties from Snatchin'! Don't know about the begonia seeds though! Hopefully someone knows!!!

Don't know about the begonias, but coleus generally roots very easily in water. Good snatch! Change the water often (every day is good), and you should see roots forming in a week or so, sometimes sooner. The coleus I snatched a couple weeks ago has nice roots now, and I probably should've potted it up last week. :-)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Pixydish, are these tuberous begonias, wax begonias, angel's wing? Here's info from Tom Clothier's germination database:

Begonia x semperflorens-cultorum , wax begonia , ,Type= an , , sow on surface @ 79º in light , 14-21d , grow on @ 60ºF

Begonia x tuberhybrida , tuberous begonia , ,Type= an , , sow on surface @ 71º in light , 15-30d , grow on @ 60ºF

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I'd dip that coleus in some rooting powder tap it off and stick it in a pot with soil in it. I have 100s because I do this.

So, since I have different advice from three successful rooters, maybe I should try both ways? My 'cutting' is about 4 inches long and here's a photo of it. Can I make two cuttings out of it? It seems to be doing fine in the water but if I can try both ways, I'd like to do it. I only have one growth tip, though. But maybe that's not necessary for these?

Recall, if you will, that I had some variegated geranium cuttings, three of which succumed to mold. I had put the little pot out on the patio in the shade of a larger pot and forgot about it. I just checked and the cutting still lives! Plus it appears to be getting some new growth! I am holding my breath for this one!

Here is a photo of the begonia flower, leaf, and seedpod. Is it an angelwing begonia? I'm not knowlegeable about begonias, just start some white tuberous ones each year to brighten up the shade border. I've never grown any other kind, but these were clearanced out and they would either go in the trash or go home with me. So hear they are. I didn't even know what they were when I bought them, just thought they looked 'good'. They are very pretty so I'll be trying to overwinter them in the greenhouse.

Pixydish, the coleus will not only root in water, but will be happy to live there, if you choose not to plant it. As for the begonia, I don't recognize it. The seedhead should be a good clue, but none of mine have time to go to seed.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Lovely plants! Here's a picture of my angelwing begonia... the flowers are much smaller than yours, but the leaf may be similar in shape. Mine wasn't really a snatch, but was given to me by a neighbor when she moved.

I have an angel wing up on an overhead beam in my house, but it doesn't look as healthy as yours, Critter. I don't think Pixy's cutting is angel wing, but if it is that, or wax begonia (which it doesn't really look like either, judging from the bloom), it would easily root in water. As for a tuberous begonia, I don't think they root in water, but I can't say that I've tried. I think the stem would just rot.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Leaves resemble a tuberous begonia and it will rot if you try and root it in water.
Bulb is very subseptible [spelling, where is my spell checker] to rot if watered too much.

Maxine

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yes, you are right, Maxine. In fact, when I store my begonia tubers in the basement in the winter, I let the stems dry and fall off naturally. Breaking off the stems at the base can cause the tuber to rot, as well.

Yes, the leaves are the same shape as the Angelwing begonia, but smaller, and the bloom doesn't seem to match any begonias I've looked at on line. Here's a better photo of the whole plant.

Looks like a tuberous type to me, but the bloom is not familiar. Of course, whatever your root starting method is, the flower should be removed to take some strain off the cutting... sob!

Center, TX(Zone 8b)

Just found this forum and I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one that does it. My husband tells me I'm going to get arrested! When I'm drive down the road and see something pretty I stop and get it. I carry a bag of potting soil around with me all the time just in case. Always be prepared. Last summer went to Austin and on the way to the capital for a meeting saw a bush and grabbed the seed pods. They didn't grow and I believe it was a Pride of Bardados. If anyone has seeds...I want to trade with you. Please don't make me come snatch them off your plant. :>)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

sorry brenda, don't have those

but last week while my kiddos were in their insect class at the museum, i took the liberty of dead-heading the dianthus, so i have plenty of those seeds LOL, i even took the label :-)

Gosh, good thinking TamaraFaye!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Welcome Brenda! You are in great company here!!! :)

OK, I've read all the forums too many times so I was looking through the Watchdog. Don't feel like working today. Look at this! Looney! Pinetree is one of the companies I order from - how is it their fault that this person was on vacation!! This one should be removed if you ask me! Kjbuxton signed up on the same day this was posted and how much you want to bet that was the last time they were on this site... Nicole

I ordered a very large order (almost $200) from Pine Tree last year. Over $50 of it was plants, which they did not send until half way through June when I was on vacation.

When it did arrive, I was gone and the plants were dead when I got home. I called Pine Treeupon my return and explained the situation. The first person was unable to help me. After several phone calls, they explained to me that they were not going to do anything about it -- neither refund my money nor replace the plants.

I will never order from them again."

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

NC, I'd pass it by Admin to see what they think. They can always contact the person who made the entry. They don't really say when they ordered or were given to expect delivery, do they. Hey, if you are getting that bored, could you come do some weeding for me. I'll fix you a nice supper and let you sit in my recliner afterward.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

oooh, I'll gladly make the same offer, NC! and I'm not quite as far away, LOL. there could even be blueberry pie for dessert.... see my post for recipe... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/530231/

OK, that's pretty off topic, but I haven't done any good snatchin' lately.... unless it counts that I got 10 free un-named iris rhizomes when I joined the local iris society at their sale last weekend? Got $10 in free named irises, too. Plus, of course, now I'm a member -- they were just having way too much fun to resist!

Gosh, those look great! They're HUGE for wild blueberries -- guess it's all that daylight you have! I could do some serious snatchin' & eatin' from bushes like that!

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Was in a discount store today, and they had various packages of bulbs marked 25cents per package. I bought more gladiolios and dahlia bulbs. Don't know if they will do anything this late but am planting them tonight.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yes, the blueberries are really good this year, Critter. Boy, I'll be digging my dahlia bulbs in another month or so to bring them inside. I suppose it's quite different in Kentucky! LOL!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

wow Weez, my dahlias just started to bloom. But really, I guess I've only got about 2 months or so with the first frost in Oct somewhere.
