I have 'Fujigasume' also, and I've gotten pale lavender-pink flowers. The photo I have is a pale lavender flower with pinkish streaks overlaying it in a star with a white throat. How the actual flowers come out will most likely vary from vine to vine, like my 'Blue Silk's--one vine makes lighter flowers than the others, so there's no telling what color flowers that you may get out of a packet of seeds. The picotee edging seems to be a pretty common occurance in JMG's, so I guess it should be no surprise that it may pop up now and then.
Morning Glorys 2005 # 6
Stacey,
This may be getting off the subject, but while we are talking about 'Fujikasumi' - Can you tell me if you think either of these might be 'Fujikasumi'. These I planted last year and do have seeds from the vines, but unfortunantly when I planted these, I must have been having a senior moment, because I did not keep accurate notes and consequently the seeds are not ID'd properly. Next year, I was planning to just plant them all to see what they produce.
If not 'Fujikasumi', do you know what they are?
This first one is a gorgeous beauty.
Silky Pale Lilac with Huge White Throat and White Star
The first one is probably 'Fujigasume' (as spelled on my packet). The second one looks like an older version of the bottom one. Are you taking all these photos at the same time in the morning? A couple of hours difference, and the flowers will have faded some, looking totally different from what they did when they opened.
Thanks for your help Stacey,
I usually take photos anywhere between 8am & 10am.
Most of the time it is around 9am.
Last year, I did good to even get to take photos.
Your 'Fujigasume' sounds very interesting.
Are you growing it this year?
The packet that I have is from Japan, but one that does
not have the name on the packet itself. Inside the packet
is the photo of the bloom, and handwritten is Fujikasumi.
Need to plant my last seed to see what I get.
Thanks again.
Yes, but it's not setting seed...I'm working on that part. I think it may have to do with our weather conditions or the soil.
2nd that!
Those are beauties!
You have 'Joyce Cobb'. 'Rebecca' is much darker.
I've gotten to where I don't buy MG seeds from individual growers anymore. I got burned on at least three purchases, one who was particularly rude about it. I'm waiting to see what I've ended up with, as far as the seeds that I know ARE the correct ones.
This is my first ever Japanese morning glory bloom and I almost missed it! It was under a couple leaves. The seeds were labeled as Asuka. Anyone know if this is what they should look like? A very deep blue, about 5-6". Leaves are varigated. Came for an eBay seller.

Susan, how AWESOME....
Me too, Me too for seeds.
Did your bloom look a Dark Purple as this photo projects?
If it is ---- I REALLY would like a few seeds.
I too planted some Asuka - but no blooms yet. The seed packet shows it to be more of a Dark Plum Color. Also, I'm still confused as to if Asuka and Heian No Umi are the same or different.
Here is my Heian No Umi from last year.
My seeds grew back True this year, but haven't gotten any great photos of the blooms yet.
I'll sure save any if I can. Would love to trade. To me the color looked more blue than purple, but I think the photo is fairly accurate in color. Guess a Bluish purple? I will get more photos.

I am soooooooooooooooooo digusted. Went outside with the kids, like I do every afternoon so we can wander around and see what needs watered, and what is blooming, and when I walked past the trellis with my Mt Fuji mix on it, there was a bloom LAYING on the GROUND!!!!!!
The silly thing bloomed this AM and I missed it!! I hadn't even seen a bud yet :( I just feel like crying.
Janis
But Janis, at least they ARE blooming.
Just be sure not to miss them in the morning.
Hang in there - The frost is still a long way away.
I hope you guys are right... Its filling out the trellis so nicely, they grow REALLY fast LOL I just want to see one in person. I have had a couple reg MG's bloom now, and my moonvines have what I think is a bud on them, but no blooms. I'm gonna get a pic of the trellis :)
Janis
I went back out about 12:30 PM to see what my Asuka was looking like and the color was now very much a deep magenta. It was pretty much fried looking form the 100 degree temps, but I took a photo anyway. I found the photo I had copied from the eBAy seller and this looks very like the color in her photo. Do you deadhead them after they bloom or just let them fall off?

Janis that is a fine trellis for your very healthy looking vines. You'll have 40 billion flowers too LOL.
Susan, the flowers will drop off by themselves, don't deadhead them if you want seeds to collect. If you don't want seeds and don't have anything to do I guess you could deadhead them, that way you won't have 40 billion x 4 volunteers coming up in your garden next year.
Joseph
Woofens, you have much taller foliage that I do. Mine is only maybe 2' tall, but very thick.
I planted the morning glories with the idea that they would provide shade for my Endless Summer hydrangeas, but they sure have not grown fast enough to do it! Guess the hydrangea will move to my mother's house this fall if they are still alive.
Lincolnitess,
Wonder what the difference is? Before we planted, I dug the beds up about 12 inches (the soil is SO bad) and we turned it all in with an inch or so of horse manure. I started the MG's in the house, but they were only 4" or so when I put them outside. The only thing I have done besides water is I cleaned the gutters out (YUCK) and dropped all the stuff in the flower bed.
The bases of mine have gone insane, I never realized that they would send off shoots in every direction. I'm out there at least once a day, curling new and wayward pieces against the trellis. Now my other trellis, it has Moonvine and a MG cross from last year I got, it not doing nearly as well as this one.
Do hydrangeas need shade? I was gonna check into them for next year but I have NO shade, just late afternoon on the east side of the house.
Janis
Janis, the Endless Summer hydrangeas said they woudl grow in part to full sun. Maybe they will if you want to water them twice a day when it's hot, but mine sure are not happy. The base of my morning glories is really full too. I may cut off some of the shoots. Maybe you were too good to your morning glories. I've heard too much fertilizer will give you lush foliage and few or no flowers. I just poked my into the soil and did not add anything.
Susan
I have been thinking maybe that is the problem :( Well, if nothing else they sure look pretty covering the trellis LOL My other MG's are blooming (not in huge numbers but are blooming) on the oppisite side of the yard, where we just used the garden weasel to break up the soil and I planted them.
I relly want to try the hydrangeas.. I have ALOT of containers, so I"m watering at least once usually twice a day anyhow, so maybe they would work for me. Now to convince DH I NEED one LOL
Thanks!
Janis
Joseph, I'm hoping they do I will save you some for sure!!
Hi everyone, I'm new to DG. I had blooms on my Ipomoea muricata,
lavender moonvine, until the first seeds pods started, then no more blooms. Should I break those off and maybe the blooms will start up again? Any imput appreciated. It's a night bloomer and I guess the term moonvine should have told me that. A soft
lilac, with dark lavender throat. Small bloom, but nice.
