One last shot before bed time. The fragrance was heavenly, and lots of pollen came right off on my nose!

LOL! Thanks, Don! It's great to see you here! The blooms on this one are pretty small. If I remember correctly, they are only about three inches across, but they smell great!

Nasty woman! torturing the rest of us like that! tsk tsk tsk! It's not fair for one plant to have so many blooms on it....at the same time! Ack! ROTFL

Congratulations Clare! It's truly a gorgeous site....and I bet it was breathtaking IRL :-)

Clare,
what a beautiful show!! The flowers look like a grouping of large scented stars.
And I really like the way your plant displays, nice and compact.
Thanks for posting,

Epi oxypetalum
Big Mama is getting ready for the final show of the season!
Yesterday we had 2 flowers, today we will have 3 to watch and then I am counting at least 15 buds for next week to open.
Here she is again -

We watched 5 flowers ( I had missed 2!) yesterday and they were still open this morning, just gorgeous.

Are you getting bored of yet another picture?

And - since we had a fairly cool morning, 58 degr F - the flowers were still open at 6:45 am.
I shot this picture straight through the window.

Hi RUK,

Beautiful flowers! I can see your picture that you have huge and healthy Epi oxypetalum. I wonder how do you bring it in the house before the winter comes.

Thanks Connie.
The plant doesn't have too far to go inside. It has a perfect spot in the greenhouse, just a couple of yards away from the summer spot on the deck.
To get it in, I pull it gently towards the greenhouse door, tilt it and THEN I yell for help because I always get stuck. But together we always manage, although prune jobs can't be avoided.

Ursula, I never get bored with your pictures! Just beautiful! Congrats:-)

Hi Claire, thanks!!

Hi Ursula,

LOL! How old it is? How often do you prune it? What will you do with cuttings after you pruned it?

Connie

Connie,
the plant is at least 10 years old. I don't know for sure because I got this particular plant from somebody ( he retired and left it for me) at my work place about 6 years ago. It was then already a good size sprawling plant.
Well, I don't prune it, the door frame does that for me.:-) Actually, I then usually choose one or two good pieces and root them, if somebody asks, I give them away. I just did that, about 2 weeks ago. I guess, I will start another one soon.
This is the plant in 2000 as one of those two plants mentioned here.

Hi Ursula,

Thanks for giving the link of your homepage. That's neat! Someday I would like to have some Epiphyllum oxypetalum cuttings and start to grow them. I wonder if it is good on the hanger.

you mean in a hanging basket?
I would think not, Epi oxy gets to be of a large size and very heavy. To make a hanging basket, I would go for the pretty cultivars.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Yeah, I agree. I had my epi oxy in a hanging basket last summer for about a week, didn't work at all!

Fair Lawn, NJ(Zone 6b)

One of my co-workers here showed me this morning pictures of his Epi oxy flowers. Very pretty!
But what was really interesting, he explained to me how he grows his plant. He tops off the long canes at a manageable height, gently keeps those together and upright in the center of the pot and lets the pads/leaves gracefully hang outwards. Can you picture that?
The "Ur-plant" from which we started all our cuttings many years ago, was also grown like that, if memory serves me right. It seems a good way to do that.

(Zone 6a)

Yes, it is hanging basket. I am glad that I asked about hanging basket. The epi oxy looks too big on the hanging basket. I have Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter cactus. They look nice on the hanging basket.
