OK....here is the best shot I could get of the one I have that bloomed. I did go out that night with a flashlight and sure enough, there it was open. Altho I didn't really detect a strong fragrance. It was more of a mild pleasant smell, and I had to get me nose right into it. (maybe it's just me) Ha.
I will post another picture of a spent bloom on the same plant. My picture taking skills have a lot to be desired.
I wonder if this is the same type of epi?
Marcy
I have a feeling...
Looks like epi oxypetalum to me, Marizee...
I agree with Darius. It looks like Epiphyllum oxypetalum to me too.
Thanks, I thought it was after viewing the above beautiful pics of yours. If I hadn't been reading this thread and recognised it as what was on my plant out front, I would have missed that bloom completely. I stopped reading and went out with my flashlight and camera just in case...and YEP...there it was in all it's glory. Wish I was a better photographer. I may also have caught it right after it opened or something & the fragrance not so intense yet. Either that or my nose is giving out. Ha. Or maybe it is because this is the first blooms for it, and it didn't know it was supposed to smell so wonderful. Ha.
Anyway, thanks for helping me put a label in it.
Marcy
So glad to be back here and find more beauties! Great pictures Clare! Been busy watering and watering and watering.......and working on the plans for the new house. We hope to grade the land in another month or so....fingers crossed. XXXX Toes too!
Yours is lovely too Marcy and I'd agree that it's an oxy! Still no buds or flowers on mine...maybe next year. :-)
Candy, I am really excited for you. You are one lucky gal:-)
temporary hi-jack to say:
It's okay Candy. We'll forgive your absence if you sware to post pics every step of the way now that things are finally "underway"....(yes, fingers, toes and legs were crossed while typing that! :-)....for the sake of legibility, I didn't cross my eyes ;-b
-Julie
LOL, Julie!8-)
Thanks Julie and Clare......I'm almost afraid to talk about it for fear of jynxing it. We need to get this moving before the next moratorium on grading which begins Oct 15th and before I get too old to even think about a garden this size!! LOL
Another 100+ day here........can't even think about what my water bill will be. :(
All the Epi cuttings are loving the heat in the Epi nursery, with their nice shade cover. Evidence of new growth on many of them.
Candy, I didn't realize that they put moratoriums on grading! I wonder why that is -- maybe because of the rain and sliding earth and mud slides are a concern.
I wish we had 100+ temps. It is quite cool for summer down here. I have one red bud forming, and lots of buds on my small-flowered epi oxy hybrid. I am liking that one more and more because it is covered in buds and will probably bloom all summer long. The flower is sweet too. I had one the other night but missed it until I saw it in the morning.
PARTY TIME!!!
We are sitting on the deck with a bottle of wine, watching the proceedings and sniffing the wonderful fragrance of 10 Epi oxypetalum flowers opening at once.
There is no way I could/even would top the gorgeous flower pics of Clare's Epi oxys, but perhaps you can envision the scene? It is a very warm night here in NJ, slightly breezy and the scent is of these flowers is just beautiful.
They are gorgeous Ursula....and I think I can smell them all the way out here in California!
As far as the "wiggling" goes......how much wine have you had????? LOL
I would like to mention - at the same time one of the Epi Edna Stoddard flowers is fully open. I am glad the Epi oxy scent is totally overpowering. Out of curiosity I just put my nose into Edna Stoddard. Would you believe - dirty feet aroma? This is most amazing. What parentage imparted this stink?
Beautiful, Ursula, beautiful! You painted a lovely picture of your New Jersey evening, and I had to smile as I was looking at your pictures and envisioning your party! Your flowers are so beautiful. They are just breath-taking!
Doesn't your camera have a flash? That's got to be tough holding a flashlight and a camera at the same time! LOL! Thanks for sharing your gorgeous pictures. ;-)
Clare,
I discarded every picture I took with a flash. They were all overexposed. I think I could use some lessons here.
I LOVE those "arty" night/flashlight shots you got Ursula. The one was so beautiful, I saved it for a screenshot. Sometimes I think the night shots are the prettiest. I have more buds forming. Guess I better hone my camera skills now. Ha.
Marcy
Ursula, that image of the double is wonderful......elusive creatures of the night. :-)
Hi Ursula, I know what you mean about overexposure. I don't know if having a patio light on will help with that or not. I think I had my outdoor lights on when I took a picture, but I can't remember now. Your pictures are just beautiful so whatever you are doing now looks great.
Awesome pics!
thanks, Darius! This plant is a lot of fun!
What a beautiful plant, Ursula. Get ready to party again tonight!
good night!
Ursula
Beautiful, Ursula! That one with the flash came out nicely! Congrats on all the wonderfu flowers! You must be in heaven right now with that lovely fragrance scenting the night air.
No fair, no fair....teasing me again.....lol! Beautiful!!
:) Donna
