Pirl - a new side of you I did not know - I have to get out and read threads more often! BTW Love it!
Did you ever just take the scissors to your hair????
I used to think I was hiding under my long hair, but in truth, it dragged me down. It drew all the attention to my chin(s) and neck instead of up to my eyes. I weighed 277 pounds and just felt dragged down, matronly and clumsy. I needed a change!
I didn't just go immediately to super-short hair, though. The first truly shorter haircut I got, my hairdresser took my hair in both hands and sort of piled it up top -- the effect of that alone was amazing. I've had people tell me I look younger and thinner with my hair styled short. Well, thinner could also be because I've shed 62 pounds! But younger, definitely. I feel younger in short hair.

Arlene, are you doing things behind my back...shame, shame....you cut more and did not post a picture? Naughty, Naughty..
Hap
Actually, Hap, in front of my bathroom mirror! The blow drying is just the best. If it takes an entire minute I'd be shocked. Then a few curls and whammo - done!
As for you 75154 - have you done any self trimming? I bet not. I don't think men are as adventurous as women.
Once, when Jack's was a tiny bit shaggy around the ears, I offered to trim it and he accepted. Between the cold scissors and my shaking hands he has always kept up to date with haircuts since that scary day for him!
Congratulations Gardenwife on losing 62 pounds!!! Unfortunately, I found 2/3 of it!!! Free for the taking... LOL ~ Suzi ♥
Hey, I found the 2 Howie lost this week, so I've lost 60. But I'm still generally heading in the right direction, LOL!
Unfortunately, thoughts of being skinny have been attacking me lately! Maybe my back wouldn't give me so much trouble IF I lost 35-50 pounds... Didn't gain them poof - not sure can devote the time daily for exercise that need to, when back in school for MBA. Plus, gotta get back better before can go for walks. :(
Too bad I just can't take the scissors out and trim off the fat, LOL :)
I hear ya! I liked what a member of a weight loss support site we belong to said (#3 is the one that really struck me):
The biggest argument obese people use against dieting is their fear of time and effort. It seems like an impossible task. I had convinced my self of the same thing, and as much as anyone would like to deny it, that attitude is a major cause of laziness.
Once I was able to step back and look at the numbers, I realized three things:
1) I have been overweight almost my entire life; that’s 30 years. If I followed any basic, logical diet, anything approved by the most basic standards of the FDA, I should, on average, lose three pounds a week. That would not be all that taxing.
2) At three pounds a week, it would take less than a year to lose all the weight I needed to lose. In fact, for me it would take approximately 44 weeks to reach my goal. That would mean losing 133 pounds. Even at one pound a week I would lose 52 pounds a year. That is phenomenal if you consider that I had been overweight almost my entire life.
3) The thing about it is, the time needed to lose the weight would pass whether I made the effort or not, so for me, the choice was: did I want to spend that time losing or gaining weight? The choice was obvious.

Just wanted to join in and say I've cut my own hair for years. Started w/ the bangs and my nerve grew from there. I've even had a few requests to do other's hair too. For those who end up w/ crooked bangs (and etc.) here's a little tip...pull your bangs straight in a curling iron to the length you want to cut them, then cut them while they are in the curling iron (don't try with curly, curly hair tho!!!).
I just got tired of the ponytail the last few weeks, so I got the back cut really, really short. The front is still longer tho...to my chin. Sounds strange, but I think it's cute. It's always tucked behind my ears, so it looks like it's pulled up. No one realizes it's cut till they see the back.
Weight loss...I'm soooo happy! I lost 20 lbs this spring! First time in my life I was successful at losing weight. I'd had back surgery that wasn't successful and finally *gave-in* to dr's requests to lose weight. Wow, am I glad I did! Besides that, it was so encouraging once my clothes started fitting better and people started noticing my efforts. As much as I wanted to eat all the junk food, I wanted more to lose the weight. I took a break from the dieting for a bit, because of other hectic things that have been going on. I'm getting close to going back on. Another 20 or 30 lbs and then the drs won't be able to complain at all...well, not about weight anyway! lol
Good for YOU, heathrjoy!!!
Yay!!! Great! I am pleased for you too... both of you! Keep it up! Before long, you'll inspire me to do it too! ~ Suzi ⑉
Two things that have helped me so much are:
"Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels". So true. What did you have three weeks ago, on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday to eat? Can't remember? Well the calories are still with us all, even if we don't remember what we ate. The moral: is it worth the calories?
Ruth Reichel, editor of Gourmet or Bon Appetit magazine, (I can never remember which one!), says, "Only eat the very best food on your plate". If the steak is too chewy, don't eat it. If the potatoes are dry but you think a pat of butter will help - just don't do it. Don't even have the butter on the table! If the salad isn't crispy - don't eat it. For many years she had to eat at restaurants every day. She was the reviewer for the food column in the New York Times. If she can be thin, we can all be thinner than we are.
Eliminating all bread does wonders for my weight: works like a magic charm.
Pirl,
Amen on the bread.
Judy
Roughage the calorie killer!! My mother always preached put a lot of roughage in your system so the calories will be flushed out before they cause you to gain weight
This message was edited Jul 30, 2005 7:13 AM
Just have a big salad with a half of a can of black beans or white beans tossed through it and you'll find out how roughage makes for what the doctors on radio politely call "quick exit time".
Pirl,
We have a running joke, "eat all the deserts you want just don't forget your roughage"
.......but I'll pass on your 'quick exit time" test. lol lol lol
Thank you for the compliments, I'm blushing! "nothing tastes as good as thin feels" is true, but I've learned to ONLY say that to myself! LOL
Pirl, that is a great point about only eating what is best on your plate. I will remember that for when I have to dine out or attend special events.
I had been on (the dreaded) Atkins diet. It worked for me. I don't recommend it. Not many things have worked for me. Atkins was just easy to follow for me, and it IS quick. I guess for me it was the most results w/ the least amount of effort. LOL It's not for everyone. My dr said short term is ok...but that was for me...not everyone. You just have to find what works for you and stick w/ it. Weight Watchers worked great for me, but I couldn't stick w/ it. On Atkins I actually quit losing weight at one point because I wasn't having enough carbs, that's hard to imagine. I was on a roll! Just talking about it makes me want to start again, once you get going on it, it's so exciting.
I do have to include a warning about Atkins tho. Since I just sung it's praises! A close friend was also on it and had to have their appendix out. The reason for having the appendix out was not related to Atkins, however the appendix was very badly infected, and the dr said such a bad infection could very well have been from not having a balanced diet (not enough carbs). They are fine now, but just had to add the warning.
I just want to get the weight off fast then get on a healthy diet. I was never overweight until I was pregnant and then had back problems.
How would you feel about typing a sign and posting it on your refrigerator about "nothing tastes", etc.?
We also keep anything extra from parties, crackers, potato chips, etc. behind closed doors. I'd prefer to feed it to the birds! You never saw a fat bird fly did you?
Maybe you could get a picture of a fat bird and stick it to the refrig to make you smile, give you encouragement, and be a reminder: all in one fat bird! :-))
I was afraid I was getting off-topic with the weight loss comments, and now I'm so glad I brought them up. Heather, that's great, your 20 pounds! Wow!
Howie and I actually feel more sated now, eating nutritionally dense (and great tasting) foods. Just replacing junk food with healthy snacks made a huge difference. If you eat right, the pounds do come off. And it's amazing how your mind changes...You change from the inside-out as well as from the outside-in.

Gardenwife,
Please don't worry about getting off topic, this thread was meant to be for FUN topic does not matter, well just so long as Pirl doesn't start taking about "you know who" weeding her garden. We don't want them to 'take her away'. lol lol lol
Judy
The gnomes don't have to weed the garden for me: no weeds grow where the sweet gnomes live! Judy, did you mean the gnomes or Peter my physical therapist. I'm too confused. :-))
Your friend from Memphis sometimes called "The King"
Oh! That pest! I sent him down to visit a friend in Pocahontas, TN!
He'll be right on time for a kitchen full of country cooking. Smoked ham slices, black-eyed peas cooked in the drippings, corn on the cob with lots of butter, fresh sliced tomatoes, Russian cucumbers and sweet cornbread..... oops that'll probably kill him.

Not if you put enough bacon and whipped cream, with some peanut butter on top!
YUCK!!!!!!!!
Hap - what happened to your wonderful sense of humor? In exchange for the ham my Elvis would skip the melted cheese on top!
Oh mercy....I think I'm getting sick.........oh..........oh.................................................
That's much better, Hap!
Bacon, whipped cream, peanut butter & melted cheese...now there's a diet I could lose a LOT of weight on!!
pirl I envy you. DW likes me to have long hair in the back. I ride with a fullface helmet. The hair out the back becomes uncombable.100 mph air does a number. How can I convince DW? (I only go fast Sunday mornings, last Sunday, 40 miles in 30 minutes. Start @ 5:30 AM)
Frankay....
Go to the end part of this thread....

PS...I had hair down to my knees...I used to braid it....at 100 I stuck my braid in my jacket..I also had a full face...it was loved by the men at the border of Canada...lol I painted it to look like a Foo dog, the opening was his mouth...I was all floresent paint..
Hap
Oh My, never would I. I'm just too much of a chicken... I know pain!!! (lol lol)
Judy
I like the idea of a braid if you want your hair that long. Less mess and easier to comb.
I've had two experiences with getting sap dropped on my head and didn't realize it until it had dried! Too late! Trying to comb it out I came out with a chunk of hair! Ouch!
There she is! I remember how long your hair was at the KYRU. I think this looks nice. :) Beautiful brug!
Judy,
Bet Elvis just loved your smile and your hibiscus! Maybe I missed something but have you cut it or are you trying to get the scissors and do it?
I did mine, again, but just to "even off" the front top. Way too short! What was I thinking? Well, I won't have it to worry about until Christmas.
Lookin good Judy..
Arlene, let's see the :"too short"...mine is definitely too short...I don't know what I was thinking. Christmas is probably about right...LOL
Hap
I'm not mentally prepared ... yet.....for a photo! Maybe tomorrow it will look better. Can I try stretching it?
Pirl,
I started this thread by saying I took the scissors to my hair.... but never posted a picture, so finally I did. The bloom is a Brugmansia (Angel's Trumpet) turned so you can see down the trumpet.
Judy
Well, I am still holding onto my locks... IF I can make it the rest of the summer, I will be all set. Trying to get it long enough to donate by next spring. Then, I will def be getting my 19 y/o to cut it back. Haven't had long hair in years. Gotta do it now, while only have a little bit of white! (Turn 50 in Jan)
I loved your pic Judy!
Hey, I lost 5 pounds, just making better choices about what I eat and drink. Maybe I can get inspired! Then, imagine how well I can do when I actually work at it! ~ Suzi :)
