Did you ever just take the scissors to your hair????

Starkville, MS

Judy, I'm sure not the one to help you out. I'm trained to put the "poofs and puffs" on poodles, but I don't believe that's the look you're going for! Enjoy your short hair. If it doesn't really satisfy you, just let it grow back.

Didn't there use to be a hair style called a Poodle Cut, or did I dream that. lol lol lol

Judy

When I was a little girl, I cut my eye lashes! I've always had real long ones and I cut them off! It's funny when I look back on it. Today's Mom would probably say ... "What in the world was your Mother thinking of ... letting you have scissors at such a young age?" Things were sure different back then. No baby proof homes back then! I've wacked on my bangs, but usually regret it when I do.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Oh I've done that also!! My hair is curly so I figured out if I just cut them short enough so that wet they hung to about the middle of my eye, when they dry they will curl back up and be the right length. But I sure looked funny until I resolved the length issue.

I'm off the make the world a better place to be, one weed at a time. lol

Well this is one hysterical thread! Judy, loved your story and wonder if you'll ever go back to long hair again?

My mother always cut my hair and I loved it. At 13 I started doing it myself and even when I made mistakes curls could make up for any dents and I had my share of them!!!

Now I'll be sweet sixteen for the fourth time next week and still cut my own hair. Better than sitting in a beauty parlor with all the stinky permanent wave smells, the enless gossip, etc. No appointment necessary and I love doing it. Last beauty parlor appointment was when my daughter was 5 months old. She's now 36 and wouldn't dream of cutting her own or her 14 year old daughter's. To each her own!

Great, great stories ladies: keep them coming!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Ah, Arlene....you come from the good ol' stock like myself....I will be 65 in Sept. Have been cutting my hair, again, now for about 5 years. It keeps getting shorter and shorter and my husband is liking it more and more....So I have a win-win situation. LOL

Kids of today.............they don't have a clue.

Hap

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Hap - I'm on top of the world: we just found out my daughter is pregnant with the first child for her and Tony, her DH. Due date is March 21, two days before the daddy's birthday!

Once a friend's son decided to make my daughter bangs. He left stubble. The pictures of her for the balance of the year are so pathetic. The mother thought it was funny! Right!

Hap - my scissors are going to get a workout tomorrow morning. If you can go really short then so can I. You can see my hair and DH on Forums: Garden Talk - Southold Historical Society.... and don't forget to sign the page with your comments so we'll have them to read to the new baby - "Charlie". See thread for details.

THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Congrats on the upcoming grandbaby, Arlene!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I second what GW posted!!!

Judy

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Arlene, you really tugged at my good memory strings with your story of your up-coming grandchild. I also was called "Charlie" before I was born......then at my birth, it was announced that "Our Charlie is a Betsy"....That was a joke all the time that I was growing up. To me, they got both...I wore the frilly dresses for my mom, but was in the garden and in the cellar with my dad repairing and building stuff,. hence I guess I led a double life...and still do.

When I cut my hair, I do it right from the shower, no even squeezing it out...Come out and comb it all down and forward from the center of my head and then do a "bowl cut." That way I have the lenght of my bangs, sides and back that I want. Then I pull clump by clump straight up and cut it starting with the top., bangs area. do the same with the sides, blending in with the top lenght. Grab the crown and make that a little longer and then use that lenght at the back for the rest of the back.

Hope this doesn't confuse. I hope that I can get DH to take a pic and then you can see what I mean. Stay tuned and good luck.

Hap

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Hap - we both do it the same way but I don't do the bangs. I can't take the hair on my forehead: much too hot. I have a mirror on a fold out metal extension and pull it out, while my hair is wet and combed and trim the back, etc. It's so great not to have to waste time at the beauty parlor and then have to pay them and not even like what they do!

Thanks for all the congrat's for the new baby: I woke up early, went into the kitchen and just started crying tears of joy all over again. My daughter went through such misery in her first marriage: the beating, the physical attack, etc. that it makes her joy in this marriage so wonderful and a baby is such a blessing!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I am so happy for you, Arlene.....I can not imagine you going through the pain of knowing of your daughter's situation. When I went through my stuff I never told anyone...I don't know if that's good or bad for anyone...

When I get the dirt off of me I will take a pic of my hair....maybe we can be twins....LOL

Hap

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Hi Hap: If I didn't mention it 100 times so far our gardens are on tour: Forums: Garden Talk - Southold Historical Society..... - please stop by and visit. It has over 200 posts now (mostly mine) and lots of photos, even our hybrid daylilies. Please write your comments on the thread so we can print it out and save it for the grandCHILDREN!!!!!

Honestly, Hap, when she came over one day about 9 years ago and was black and blue from her throat to her ankles I wanted to kill him. He doesn't have the right to live and has now remarried. I feel so sorry for her and the pain she'll go through. Even my granddaughter, Megan, told her mother, I feel sorry for her. What perception!

If I can get myself up and into the shower before dark I'll do some cutting myself but I'm going one step at a time!

Arlene

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I did it and I like it but maybe it should be even shorter. Fair warning - I took pictures wearing the earrings Kaleem sent me along with my Cape Cod tee shirt so don't go too hysterical. Have to go see what I got on film. TTYL

I got sick of my hair once, was seriously considering cutting it off and had scissors in my hands. My DD said I dare you and I did cut a piece. She couldn't believe I would do it, then asked if she could cut too... I let her.

She was 9 and did a great job. I also knew that my neighbor was home and could fix any really bad lengths for me. She didn't have to "fix" much at all. Friends at church and work couldn't believe that I would let a 9-y/o cut my hair. Why not? It'll always grow back. Same philosophy still holds. She's almost 20 now and cuts both mine and her sister's, whenever we need/want it.

Been sick of it lately and contemplating cutting it. However, trying to exercise patience since have been considering saving it to send for the wigs for cancer victims, like my younger step-dau did last Christmas. Will I last that long? Don't know... Patience has never been my long suit! ~ Suzi ♥

OK - here come the photos. You saw the before photo on the garden tour so here's the after - credit to Hap!

I didn't go crazy and here's what I cut off. Be honest if you think I should go shorter.

I think it looks darling!! I vote for leaving it that length.

Judy

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks Judy: you're vote #1 and now I have to go make dinner. I'll be back at 8:00 for the rest of the jury!

Moon Twp, PA(Zone 6a)

I like it too!! Looks very nice! ~ Suzi ♥

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

You dun good....I like it...with all the natural wave that you have, I agree, I would not go any shorter. From the front shots, the back looks good to....it's the right lenght...keeping with the front.

I likes it... My professional fee.........the earrings...LOL

Hap

(Zone 5b)

looks great just like it is pirl

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks for all the votes. Today I set it with the curling iron: no natural waves here! Tomorrow I'll try just blowing it dry. I'm just afraid it will be much too flat for me: I'm from Queens, NY - home of BIG HAIR!

I explained to Hap that Kaleem sent me the earrings as a gift. Otherwise I doubt if I'd have worn them with a tee shirt but he wants a photo.

If I do cut the sides again I'll let you know.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I love the new 'do, Pirl! :) The earrings are beautiful, too.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks. The earrings are "one of a kind" type and not my typical plain Janes. They really didn't match my tee shirt but I did feel quite fancy for the evening.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I could tell; they are treasures..

I have started to wear my "special jewelry" more often. I realized, 1. Where do I really go to wear it anymore, and 2. If I don't wear it now, I never will.........So I have started to re-enjoy my stuff. Why keep it in the safe getting dusty??????

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, if I didn't mention it, I highlighted my hair last Friday night. Really turned out good. Was getting pretty shaggy, so went and had it cut today. (that's one thing I don't do) My hairdresser, as she was putting me in the shampoo bowl says, so what in the hell happened to your hair. She is used to me coming in with all kinds of things done to it. Later, as she was drying it, she admitted that I had done a pretty good job. All of my experiments don't come out as well, and she has fixed some real messes for me too.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

My ex hated the fact that not every hair was the exact same shade of light blonde so I started coloring it when we got married, in '62. By '82 I was becoming my own person and stopped coloring it. But when I felt like a little color was in order (in the 90's) I'd use some coloring and an old toothbrush - worked like a charm.

Now I have so many shades of blonde that everyone thinks I color it and I no longer touch it: the sun bleaches it baby blonde but only at the ends.

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

I took the clippers and the scissors to mine last night. I lost 2 lbs in just a few minutes! LOL

It feels SOOOOo much better. Nice and short and wash and wear!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Betsy - it feels like freedom! Pure freedom!

somewhere, PA

Arlene - you must have been at my place when you took those pics!
The wall paper is the same as mine! I just wish my "do" was as niceas yours..

All - just found this thread. I've been so tempted so many times to whack
off this thick head of hair that the thread title grabbed me! I get my hair
cut 2X a year (or at least once a year). It just grows straight for my face.
I pull it back w/barretts for work & put it in a pony tail at home. When the
pony tail is too long (starts making my back hot), that's when I see a
cheapo haircutting place. I just hate the idea of having to get it cut more
often! But I love the idea of short hair.

I guess I gotta learn to cut it myself!
Tam

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I don't miss my long hair, especially since I don't *have* to wear a ponytail. When mine was long, down to mid-back, it got tangled so easily if it wasn't lashed into submission. Mine's short (I mean short-short) now, and I adore it! No more sweaty, heavy locks clinging to my neck, no more tangles. Long hair was my thing for many years, but I feel so liberated now!

Tra-lalalala. LOL

somewhere, PA

Oh you are tempting me so....

I guess the other thing that's holding me back is vanity. All my life, people
have complimented me on my "gorgeous hair". I've got my dad's fat chin
and my mom's jowls. (When did I start looking so much like them anyway!)
Definitely when I retire (so looking "young" is completely irrelevant to my
income!) I'm going short. "til then, vanity vs comfort will continue to battle it out!

Tam

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks Tammy! I took out the scissors twice more this past week and used it!!!! I did the sides even shorter, more layered and then, today the bangs. I really like it now. Think that next week I may chop again!

When I was with my son and his friend, and the friend's mom, long ago, she said (about her hair being long), "it's my last stab at youth". She was about 37. I was amazed that she thought she looked younger with the long hair. When she got it cut she looked more than 10 years younger and hated her pictures with the long hair.

There's a certain age, possibly different for each of us, that long hair just isn't as attractive as short well groomed hair is. At 37 (must be something about that number) I went longer but after about two years that trusty scissors came out and I've been short since but this is the shortest since about 1984! You were all still wetting your diapers back then and you all had short hair!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Much as I love long hair, I must admit short hair is a lot of freedom!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Freedom, cooler, easier to keep. I just love it.

(Zone 5b)

I like short hair better too but I don't wear makeup anymore and without it I've always looked like a boy with short hair. When I was in my mid-20s (and a couple months pregnant) I was playing bingo with my aunt at a club she belonged to. I had short strait hair and no makeup. Someone asked her if "that boy" was old enough to play! My son says I look like a hippy with my long hair but I look even older with it short. My last d.l. picture was with short hair. I just had it renewed last weekend, and my new picture with long hair is so much better so for now I'm still dealing with the long stuff.

I've had a couple of good short haircuts, so I'm thinking of going to someplace that can do anything with anybody's hair & face shape but after all these years of not spending money on hair cuts I'm really having a hard time going just from thinking of how expensive it'll be.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Cheryl, I get the "mister" thing too when I don't wear any jewelry or make-up, and wear my ball cap. Too bad, it's me anyway.
