Did you ever just take the scissors to your hair????

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

No I didn't know what I was doing and when it dries I'll probably have to go get someone to straighten out the mess, but I was sick and tired of having a blanket on my head in this heat. I've only had short hair ONCE many, many years ago. I like my hair long because it's easier for me to take care of and DH loves long hair, don't most men, but I was HOT!!

I'm surprised no one gave that tip on the thread "Dang It's Hot!!! How do you stand it!!! Tips Please"

Now people won't recognize me!!

Judy

Hi Judy, I'm sure it looks fine. How does it feel?

I used to trim my hair when it was long. But now it is quite short for the last couple of months. I don't like the way it grows out. I wish I had the guts to cut it myself but I don't. I get it cut again next week and I can't wait. I'm really surprised though how sweaty my short hair gets. I miss being able to pull it back or braid it.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Gosh, it feels wonderful!! I have kinky curly hair so when it is long it pulls some of it out, or it's not soo kinky curly. lol lol It's kinked all over my head but when I'm hot and stand in front of a fan it blows and dries it out. I think I'm going to like this.

Judy, only cut my hair once. Didn't know squat about cutting hair. I washed it, and this was years ago when you rolled it. Well I cut it before I put it on rollers. Well when I took the rollers out, I had about 249 different lengths of hair. Looked like someone had taken a weed wacker to it, or a lawn mower with a dull blade. Only had a perm once, DS is a hair stylist and he put one in several years ago. My hair is fine and thin, thought this would give it more volume and I could just wash it and let it dry on its own. Well it looked nice when he first did it, but the first time I washed it and let it dry on its own, looked like I had stuck my finger in light socket. I had my hair cut every week until I got all that perm cut out. NEVER AGAIN. What we girls will do in the name of beauty!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

LOL LOL Just imagine, mine is naturally like yours was when you got the perm. Funny, funny!!! There was a point in my life when I did a reverse perm, to make it straight.

Funny what we want. You don't want curls, I do!!

When I was in Middle School, I used to watch the show Here Comes The Brides every Friday night :) I loved the way the brides looked, and had the bangs with part of their hair back in a ponytail. I wanted my hair to be like that, so one night I took the scissors to my head to make bangs. I cut them so short, all I had was stubble. My mother had to take my hair from the back, brush it up in front and make bangs that were eyebrow length for me. I had not enough hair to make a ponytail. I felt foolish for a very long time and learned a valuable lesson. (That's why God created hairdressers!)

When my two girls were younger, the oldest one decided to be funny and cut one side of hair on my youngest daughter. She woke up to one side VERY short and the other VERY long. I had to take her to the hairdresser and have a "boy's" haircut done on her. She still has not forgiven her sister or me.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I'm keeping it short, DH told me I looked 10 years younger!!

I've made a few efforts to trim or even out some growth but I've never been brave enough to tackle the whole head!! It's stick straight so my results would be much worse than someone who has curls to cover the damage! Now when I need a little trim, I ask my DD, who is a dog groomer, to do it. She does require me to bark in appreciation.........the brat!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

ROTFLOL!

meezersfive - I love your posting and you are absolutely right about not being able to tell I have a bad hair cut. I just got in from working outside in the heat & humidity for 4 hours now I have the frizziest hair you have ever seen. lol lol

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

LOL I'm a hair cutter off-er - when it bugs me - off it goes. I go to my hairdresser for a cut and color about 3 times a year and she's always laughing at me. She thinks its a hoot cuz she has so many people who will never touch scissor to hair - scares them to death! I figure the worst I can do is cut it all off and it'll still grow back - lol yeah, I know, I'm strange......... I still get ribbed about cutting off my eyebrows in grade school. Apparently I saw some lady that did that and penciled in brows - since I was clueless about makeup, I had no brows for awhile. :)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I've heard lots of stories about children cutting their hair or a siblings hair, but never eyebrows. Too funny!!!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I wear my hair short, and when it gets a little too long, I can't do anything with it. My hairdresser has a way of disappearing for a month or so at a time, so I do take the scissors after mine on occasion.

When I finally get into my hair dresser, she says, "I see you've been combing your hair with a scissors again!" LOL

I think I was a hairstylist in a former life- I think nothing of cutting into mine. Bangs too long- whack..Back not right - another whack. Now that it is real short, I go every 5 wks to get it cut, but always have to shorten the bangs about two weeks after its cut (hairdresser and I have a feud going on that one - I want them short - she leaves them long) I also cut DH and both DS (when they lived here) - DH has never been to a barber. Now that DS's are on their own, I refused to do theirs, so they do them themselves - short style is in thank goodness!!

I even highligh my own!!! how do you spell cheap.....

Tried doing the fake nails - but that was a bust. Don't want to be careful of them in the summer.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Sarv, I think we were separated at birth.....LOL I color my own, too, It just burns me up to pay someone $75 to color and highlight my hair and still not get it right....Got the dog groomer sucked into doing that too, but I don't have to bark. Gave up on fake or even real nails a long time ago, although I occasionally go in to get my cuticles trimmed, and shock the manicurist by not having any polish. She's like a pusher, "Don't you want a nice color? Don't you want to have clear and glossy ? Why don't you try this nice pearly pink". Why bother when I'll immediately have my hands in the dirt?

Younger daughter shaved her eyebrows off in high school. Don't know what she was thinking. Still don't.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

lol - see, I'm not the only odd ball on the planet - there's at least one other! (in my defense, I think I was only 12...)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

LOL, Judy... on Dec. 1st last year I got my O2 tubing caught in my hair one time too many. I got up in the middle of the night and viciously attacked my hair. The next morning when I could see it in daylight it was a frightful mess. Not having any money for a hair cut, I drove over to a friend's house... knowing she runs the clippers over her DH's head.

I had her do mine, 1/2" long all over. A bit too short to suit me and now keep it about 2" long. Get called "Sir" a lot if I'm wearing the ball cap my dermatologist says I must, LOL.

I love long hair, love to wear it up off my neck but short hair is just so much easier.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

and your defense is????????????? ROTFLOL

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Well, I let my DD cut my hair a few months ago, my DH had to come straighten it out, and I've been thinking of getting it cut professionally this time, I don't like long hair on me, it's so fine , thin, and stringy, looks awful, I look much better with shorter hair. and I think I'm gonna get it one shade darker than it is now too, have to make the appointment this week I guess. I have cut my own hair before. not a pretty sight though. Did you mention how short you cut it Judy? I've seen your picture on another post before I think in the brug forum, and it was pretty long then.

Ok, your gonna have to start a thread now posting our pics to our names so we can all see each other LOL short frizzy hair and all LOL.

I get aggravated at mine frequently, but the last time I cut it above my shoulders, we had the coldest winter on record, (-10 to-30 for a week!) and I froze! Never again above the shoulders. That said, I constantly whack on my bangs, and the longer part as well to keep it where I can at least pretend to curl it. I used to have waist length hair, but when I turned 40 and it started turning too, I decided that waist length GRAY hair looked kind of silly.

The embarrassing part was when I spoke with a lady who needs some help with her landscaping and wanted plants from me. She's a beautician, and offered to "fix" my latest screw up in exchange for the plants. Apparently I'm not very good at whacking on it.

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Judy - two years ago I took the electric hair trimmer to mine. It was thick and hot and I wanted it short and cool. It worked and didn't look too terribly bad. I was a hairdresser in a former lift though.

But - I'd do it again - in fact after today I'm thinkin about it. It's down on my neck in back and I HATE that. So we'll see.

Darius - right after DH and I got engaged - I got a 1" cut all over - I thought he was going to die.....but I've never had long hair. Only to my shoulders and that's it. I got way to much hair for length. I'll have to scan in my high school grad pics so you can see...quite funny actually.

Maybe 3-4 times in 26+ years my sister in law cut my hair, but usually I do everything to my own hair - cut, curl, color, and perm. I keep my bangs trimmed and sometimes if a few strands get in my way at work I'll just take my scissors and snip them out of my eyes at my desk. Now my hair is halfway down my back and I need it cut really reaally bad. But it's been so long since I cut it that I'm not so sure of myself anymore. I just might have to break down and get it done for a change.

Oak Grove, MN(Zone 4a)

I had mine cut and donated to Locks of Love this spring. It hasn't been this short in years, but I figured that the worst thing that could happen is that I would hate it until it grew back. Actually, I like it a lot, much easier to deal with.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Bless you for donating to Locks Of Love

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

sarv---I too do the whole shebang....But my question is, where is all the money we're saving?

I have short hair and have cut my own for about 5 years.....coloring I used to do, then had it done, ......but, as you said, why pay for someone else to futz it up? I can do that for free....so now I do.

Going to the lenght thing, I had hair down to my knees....at about 35 I cut is all....I really wanted it down to the floor like my grandmother once had it, but the headaches were wicked.

Yes, sylvi, that was great....I have a friend that grows her hair just for that..

Every time I get really stressed out I take my shears to my hair. I have had to have my DH hide them this past couple of weeks as I have been stressed to the max and I would hate to see what I would do. I used to be a hairdresser and always cut my own hair. I have been growing it out now though so I can pull it back in a ponytail when its so hot out. Makes life a little easier.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I hear that, hide them shears!!! I've been running around with a 'black cloud' over my head for several weeks now so maybe it was stress that made me 'do it'....but I'm not trained and didn't know what I was doing. lol lol lol

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

Sheesh ladies! I have cut my own hair for 20 years. In the shower, comb it all forward, cut off whatever reaches my eyes. I think it's still too long but DW disagrees. I do miss going to a stylist, especially the "leaners". Frank

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Frank,

So funny!!! I love your DW and you.

Judy

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

It took me awhile, Frank.....oh, oh, you naughty boy....heheh

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I didn't get it until Happy_1 posted. I'm so slow!!!

Judy

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I guess it's age, Judy....hehe

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Hap,

I can't blame it on age, I've always been this way. I never catch 'jokes' unless they are really obvious, which come to think about it, the above was.

Have a good day. We're watching the weather like most everyone in the South is doing.

Judy

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Yeh, so am I.....but this is such a good diversion for a couple of minutes...Just have the biggest lump in my throat...

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

So what is the latest??? Is it headed your way?

Judy

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

No, the only thing that we have had is some wind and rain....some people have lost power...Ok from where I sit....very fortunate...

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Wonderful!!

Russell, KY(Zone 6b)

I've cut my own hair since around 1970- I could never get anyone to do what I wanted so I just did it myself. Course I've had the same Robert Plant hairstyle for decades now...
*And* I can cut it directly into the toilet and not get a speck of hair in the floor!

Since moving to this house I have a mirror hanging on the fence outside where I do it on cool days (and where hubman shaves), but mostly I just do it in the bathroom.

I always did the color myself as well, but since I am gardening and swimming so much these past few years I discontinued the coloring business. Gray is so much nicer!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Lets hear it for you, so practical!!!

Judy
