Some pics today

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Just a few pics I took today as I walked around my garden.

See the silver leaves towering above the house? That is a eucalyptus plant that was about 8 inches tall when I planted it two years ago.

sometimes I wish I lived in a tropical zone so I can grow all those wonderful plants. But then the humidity would kill me.

Lisa, your pictures are so beautiful!

I want to alert you on your Eucaliptus tree. Eucaliptus have very superficial roots (almost horizontal). For this reason, we do not plant them close to houses or any other building in Chile, specially in southern Chile, where rain/wind storms are quite frequent. If you consider that hurricanes like the ones that you unfortunately are exposed to are hundreds or thousends of times stronger than our rain/wind storms, it is dangerous to have this tree so close to the house. For this reason, and to keep the roundish silver leaves (when the tree matures the leaves become lance-shaped and green), I suggest you cut the trunk from time to time. This will not kill the tree, but have it produce sideshoots with those nice roundish silver coloured leaves.

Hugs,

Ursula

It is about fifteen feet from the house. Do you think that is safe?

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Yes, but only if you do not let the Eucalyptus develop into a full tree. They become VERY tall and that makes them extremely unstable. If I were growing one I would never let it grow taller than the roof of the house, but we do not have hurricanes that 'raise' trees into the air.

Hugs,

Ursula
