Pittsburgh-area Gardeners

Pittsburgh, PA

Hi everyone,
I'm new to Dave's Garden and thought it would be fun to start a thread for those of us in the Pittsburgh area to discuss, well, whatever we have in mind. By way of introduction, I have two small gardens -- one on the side of the house that is 99% shade, and another out front which used to be the "yard" of this urban rowhouse. I guess I'm lucky I have limited space or else I'd come home from the garden center each weekend with a whole lot more than I already do.
Next year I hope to devote the entire front to lilies: Orientals, Orienpets, some Asiatics and LAs. The lily "obsession" started two years ago when I came home with some stargazers from the Home Depot, which were pretty much bloomed out and which I practically forgot about. But the following year, I returned home from vacation in mid-July and found these magnificent blooms with their intoxicating fragrance, and I was hooked.
So last fall I ordered a number of Oriental bulbs and got some for my November birthday, and right now it looks like there are over a hundred coming up in this small (10' x 15') space. Not planted in rows like corn, but growing in a naturalized looking way.
Well, enough about me. What I thought would make an interesting first topic would be local resources. And I'll start by putting my two cents in: I've lived in Pittsburgh all my life, but only this year I discovered two local greenhouses that really impressed me: Brenckle's, on Mt. Troy Road in Reserve Township, and Trax Farms in Finleyville.
At Brenckle's I found huge, well-cared-for perennials such as bleeding hearts and columbine, which around here seem hard to come by. Also, large Kong coleus for $5.99. At Trax Farms today I found some really interesting species lilies as well as some unusual Orientals such as the white stargazer. I always manage to find room in the garden for something I like, and haven't yet had to evict an old plant for a new one :)
So, what do you say? What garden centers here in Pittsburgh are your favorites, and why?
Rick
