Established Dogwoods & Drip Irrigation

Little Rock, AR(Zone 8a)

I am having a problem finding a source for calculating the amount of water needed by established dogwood trees.

My DH and I have finally ripped out the weeds, stray grass and moss, added about 6 inches of mostly organics, dug it in, and planted the beginnings of a shade garden on the yard side of the 3 large dogwoods which line the steeply sloped brick driveway of our 70 year old property. We have lived here for 20 years and have seen footage of these trees in bloom on local television as harbingers of spring (I think they were taken before we moved in). The property is well beloved here in the old neighborhoods. On the driveway side of the trees, the ground slopes steeply down to the rock lined driveway. On the lawn side of the trees they are level with the grass in the lawn, but the whole property slopes uphill from the street toward the house, not as steeply as the drive, with the house on one side of the drive and the rose garden on the other.

Ok, I have set the mood. I have 1 sprinkler station which currently operates 6 popup spray heads to water this area under the dogwoods and a sunny area just at the top of the driveway which is being dug out to become a new rose bed with a fountain in the middle. I want to convert it to a drip station. I can figure out how to water the other plants, although getting enough water to the roses and not over watering the shade plantes might be a challenge, playing with the number of emitters should do it. BUT i just don't know how much to water the trees. I need to put enough on them to deep water them. I don't really think they have been getting enough water with the present system in the dry spell we are having. Our soil is ROCKS with some clay and regular soil aroud them up here on top of the hills. I really need some help on this. I cant use a deep irrigation tool because I cant get it down in the ground. My DH is taking rocks the size of Yorkies out of the new rose bed.

Any and all advice and commiseration and jokes are welcome

I have seen a water meter you can hook up to your garden hose
on a few websites. you could use that and hand water your tree
till you feel like its got a good watering and then see how many
gallons it took. then you could figure out what size / how many
drippers you need and how long to have them watering.

say your tree took 10 gallons , Drippers 1 GPH , get 5 of them
so that would water 5 gallons per hour, then u need to run it for 2
hours ... 10 gals
