Seeds in the wind. . .

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

. . . to paraphrase an old song. Have you ever looked at your overflowing seed box and just wanted to take it out and throw the seeds to the winds and let fall where they may? I promised myself that this year I would clean out, and I got a start on that earlier in the year when I sent several packets out to different people and when I DID NOT MAKE OUT ONE SINGLE SEED ORDER!

But now, it's really really spring and time to plant and that seed box is almost as full as it was last year. So, I took all the poppy seeds and went out to what I call the rose jungles, yanked golden rod and yellow rocket and wild raspberries and, in a rather controlled way, threw the poppy seeds to the wind. If they come up, there will be Alis Pink poppies down by the early red peony (thanks, Weezingreens!), some california poppies and antique Flemish poppies and black P. somniferom by the dark red peonies, some of the Flemish and black out by the new Queen Ann pear tree and red corn poppies mixed in with the rampaging lemon balm below the driveway. I don't know, it may not work out at all, but it seemed like it wouldn't hurt, so there it is. I've gone through some of the other flower seeds and think I'll plant them in seed starter out on the plant table by the cellar door and then stick them in where ever there ends up being an empty space. I could end up with a real patchwork garden this year! Of course, the last time I tried anything like this, I ended up with 10,000 forget-me-nots scattered in ALL of the gardens, but they are pretty for a while and pull easily. We'll see!

Sounds like a great idea! Be sure and take pictures of them when they come up.

It's so windy here that if I let my seeds go, they would end up growing somewhere in Minnesota. :)

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

I did that last year. Just threw some seeds in a new bed with some young perennials. I liked the effect so much I bought some seed mixtures from American Meadows and just threw seed everywhere. I have perennial beds but threw some different seed there too. I figure of all the seed I threw that something has to grow somewhere! It's a great idea. Of course my garden is kind of "wild" anyway.

Some of the seed I threw down are now blooming, So far I have sunflowers and nemophila!

I have tried that with wildflower mix - but the birds swoop in and help themselves, and I don't end up with much.
