mgh, You've got some lovelies there. Like the group picture. I'm trying lillies for the first time this year.
Joan
Lilies and Daylilies!
Nice Mendy. How are your naked ladies doing?
Thanks Joan and Moby.
Moby, they're fine.....the foliage is dying back now. Does that mean I will see a bloom stalk soon?

Nope. When it's all gone and you've completely forgotten about them, that's when you get the "surprise"! That's August here.
Joan ~ for the first time?? You've got some wonderful lily growers up there. Lucky you !
Wow, that's a long time to wait. It will be worth it though! :-)
Very nice lilies, mgh :-)
Will someone please hand me another drool bucket? The one I have is overflowing!!! LOL Great pics, Steve!!
Mendy
What are the yellow ones called ?? (my favorite color in lilies)
Thanks Mendy - I have Futuras, Conca d'Or's, and maybe Indian Summers - I will have to look if I have other yellow ones!
I like the pale yellow one too Steve. Very soft colour with a few freckles. Ü
Joan
You have so much color going on at all at once Steve! It is beautiful.Your plants seem to be standing up well to the heat.
Susan
steve, that's just absolutely gorgeous! i want to have something like that!
my asiatic lilies will bloom soon. i think. but i only have 2 cultivars, so not as fun as your collection.
you know once costco has the bulbs, i'll be grabbing lilies until my cart is full. ha-ha.
Happy anniversary!
Thanks, Moby!
steve, you just keep on wowing us.
when are mine going to bloom? i only have "noblesse" and "tom pouce".
Love the Kopper King Hibiscus. Hibiscus are a new love of mine in the last few years and I managed to winter one over. Will post a picture sometime.
Joan
Thanks Moonglow and Joan
Moonglow, my Tom Pouce is usually the last of my Orientals to bloom - last year it bloomed around July 10th or 11th. In your climate it'll probably be a month after that at least!
Joan,
I love it too. Hardy hibiscus are the greatest - standard hibiscus will not overwinter here, since it gets too cold, but the hardy ones do. I am glad to hear they can make it in your climate as well! Last year we had a lot of rain and a mild summer for here, and Kopper King was actually very washed out and pale with little red/pink color. This year has been dry and the summer has been HOT so far - and it's bigger and brighter than ever. Go figure. I'll post Fantasia when it blooms - it's an unbelievable violet/purple.
Wow, I love your 'Kopper King' Hibiscus, Steve!!! I bought 3 hardy hibiscus from Nadi's coop.....we'll see how they do if they ever get any bigger. I put 2 in the ground and one is still in a pot. The one in the pot is twice as tall as the others....don't know why it's doing better. Sorry to hear about your 'Blackjacks'. I was really happy to see mine finally open. I suppose I should cut them and bring them in the house if I want to enjoy them longer. Someone decided to steal most of my other lilies that were blooming. They took one scape of Blackjack, and all of the scapes on First Lady, Desert Song, Endless Love, and Red Artiste. I'm sure they'll be back for the rest of Blackjack and then I have Avonlea and Tom Pouce still to bloom. Makes me sooooo mad!!!! I'm going to move those bulbs to my back yard this fall.
Ok, enough of my ranting and raving....on with the lilies!!! LOL
Mendy
Wow Mendy - it takes a lot of nerve for someone to help themselves to your flowers! Do yuo have them in front or back? I'd be fuming if someone did that after my hard work!! Well, maybe you're catch someone in the act!!!
That makes me so glad I live way back in the woods! I remember one time when I lived in a neighborhood I looked out the window and saw a kid helping himself to a huge armload of flowers! He was young(6 or 7) and asked me why the flowers all grew in my yard. He was picking them for his mother, so I tried not to show my anger too much! Don't have to worry about that any more; if anyone mistakenly starts down my driveway they expect to hear Dualing Banjos any moment and turn around!
Steve, your lily pics are so wonderful! My Asiatics have just begun and the trumpets, orienpets, and orientals are all just budding. I've been considering 'Satisfaction'-what a beauty! The thing that gets me is how the companies alter the photos, making the colors look much brighter and more intense than they really are. In all the catalogs I've seen they make 'Satisfaction' look like the hottest pink with a really bright yellow center. Makes it hard to plan a color scheme!
Mendy, why don't you whip up a not-so-small sign ( I know you can) that says something like "A lot of effort went into this garden, please leave the flowers for the enjoyment of all".
Then string up a trip line. ;)
Well Steve, with the idiots who live in my neighborhood, I'm not so sure it's nerve, but rather lack of respect.....well ok, maybe both. And yes, I was fuming...still am! I threw a fit for about an hour yesterday when I realized what happened! It makes me sick to my stomach when I think about it again. I didn't sleep well last night....had a dream that I looked outside and everything in that bed was gone. Needless to say I didn't even want to look outside this morning....I made my DH look first, but of course he doesn't know what all is out there. Thankfully nothing was missing this morning. The lilies are in the front of my house, but next year they will be in the fenced side yard. I will plant something not so inviting in that bed next year. Hmmmm....what kind of plant is really pretty, but will give you a nasty rash if you touch it? Any ideas? ;-)
Gemini_sage, I sure would be upset if a I saw a child doing it too, but I would have a hard time showing my anger too, especially toward a young one like that. Unfortunately, I think this is an adult who is doing this....it happens in the middle of the night. I suppose it could be some young punk kid, but I can't imagine them being 6 or 7 years old. LOL at the Dueling Banjos! I would probably turn around too! I really wish we lived someplace like that, but we are still a few years away from being able to sell this place and buy a bigger place with more property.
Moby, I have thought about that, but I guess I just figured I'd spend time on making a really cute little sign and then it would end up getting stolen too. Guess I could try it anyway. A trip line, huh? I like that idea!!
I saw a man walk past my house the other day with his 2 daughters. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw my lilies and said, "Wow girls, look at these. They're beautiful!" The girls just kept walking though. I didn't think anything of it until I saw him walk back by and the girls had a bunch of roses in their hands. There aren't any flower shops near my house! It makes me sick to think he would let them take those out of someone's yard.
Mendy
Hi Mendy,
Well I can relate. I have idiots next door to me and others in the neighborhood who don't have respect for others' property. Had an argument with my neighbor a few months ago who didn't see a problem with her Great Dane running loose in my yard and in my flowerbeds. Usually, though, if kids act up, you know where they learned it - since the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Fortunately the back yard is fenced in and I keep it locked. But, I'm with you and jealous of gemini sage - I will never, never, EVER live in a congested neighborhood again like this with the houses so close together and such small lots. I really should have looked around more instead of rushing to buy a house!
Gemini sage, post pics as yours start to bloom! I still have some Orientals budding out and more Muscadets are opening. I had to have my irrigation system redone in the back yard, though, so it's now a muddy mess :-( Oh well, there's alwways next year!
Mendy, I so sorry you lost so many of your lilies! I hope they at least had the sense to take them and put them in water. My front is very opened to anyone walking by, but I have been lucky not to have had too much of a problem.. Once in awhile a scape will be broken off a daylily or something like that, but no lilies so far. I hate to admit this, but when I was about 6 or 7, I was one of those kids who helped themselves to others blooms once in awhile on my way to school, so I never get too upset if I see a bloom missing here or there. I have talked to the kids in my neighborhood about how I have to wait a whole year to see some flowers bloom and that they may only bloom one time a year. I also let them help me plant bulbs in the fall and then they get really excited about seeing them bloom in the spring. Of course it does sound like your thief knew exactly what they were doing.
Susan
A friend is coming over with her digital today to start getting some pics. Everything is pretty well weeded, the borders are cleaned out and the lawn is mowed, so now is a great window of oppertunity.I feel like a parent on school picture day, making sure my kid's hair is combed and clothes are presentable!
I must admit, I was one of those kids to. I was such a nerd growing up I rarely had to be disciplined, but the one spanking I remember was for reaching out into someones yard as we walked by and picking a handful of red tulips. When I was 5 someone gave me a tonka pick up truck; I filled the bed with dirt and planted a wildflower in it! I think I was destined to be a gardening freak from day 1!
Yeah...me too. First thing every morning, I would go check our little flower beds. It was a great day when I could find a big spider web still wet with dew.
Yes, I do think this thief knew exactly what they were doing....and just when it was starting to come alive with color. I wouldn't mind if it was just a bloom here or there, but now there is a great big gap in my flowerbed. Oh well, my Avonlea lilies started opening up yesterday.....thought I'd get a pic before they disappear.
Yep, I think I was destined to be a gardner too. When I was a kid we had a camper shell at the back of our property that I used as a fort. I remember digging up some weeds and planting them all in a row beside the camper. I was so proud of myself!
I feel like a parent on school picture day, making sure my kid's hair is combed and clothes are presentable!
LOL, Gemini_sage....I know exactly how you feel! I felt that way as I was getting ready for John_ Benoot to come over for a visit.....had to have everything just right!
