Bible or Scripture Garden

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

I want to start a garden that would have a scripture verse to go with each plant.

Like "Lily of the Valley" - and "Rose of Sharon"
Song of Solomon 2:1
I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.

Or "Lilies" - Luke 12:27
"Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

"Hyssop"
Psalm 51:7
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Chicago "fig" (hardy to zone 5):
Zechariah 3:10
In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree.

Grapevines:
John 15:4-5
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Coriander:
Numbers 11:7
And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.

bdellium
(dĕl´çem) , aromatic gum resin obtained from trees of the genus Commiphora (Balsamodendron of the incense-tree family). It is similar to myrrh. Bdellium is used in medicines and perfumes.

OK, you get the idea. Now, I need more suggestions for adding plants to my Bible garden.

I will appreciate any input you can give! I'm zone 5b so have to watch the native Israel plants but we can probably substitute with something else along the way. For instance, I wonder what kind of vine grew over Jonah?

Thanks in advance for your help and wisdom.

to glorify Him,

Here's a great resource for information on developing your Biblical Garden. One of the members of the board of directors is a neighbor and has been involved in developing such gardens for a number of years. The St. Bonaventure Garden is also right down the street a few blocks.

Thank you, Happenstance.

What a nice idea for a garden. I did a search on Google and found this cute little story.

Wonderful, Cheryl!

I need to add some miscanthus (grasses) and maybe some kind if barley, and of course there is "Moses in the Bulrushes" which is also called spiderwort...

Isn't there Jacob's Ladder?

Bishop's Weed?

Thinking I need something scarlet and white as snow... side by side of course!
And a feeder for the sparrows so they won't fall, and a fountain of blessing...
I'm getting a picture in my head now... Help me out everyone!!

Please do not plant Bishop's Weed. It's listed in many states' invasive lists and you'll soon regret it. Nothing kills it, and it will choke out everything you try to grow nearby. I had an asparagus bed choked out by Bishops weed that was planted by a neighbor.

OH DEAR! Thanks for the heads-up! I don't want anything that could hurt my neighbors' stuff. They are all very garden conscious and worried about things like weeds. We have enough trouble with Canada Thistle!!!

You could put the Bishop's weed in a big pot and bury it up to the rim so it doesn't get away. I am growing some of it and it is struggling to survive so maybe it depends on the climate. Nobody has mentioned apples ( I know we just assume it was an apple but it would fit right in with the theme). Also there is a perennial with the common name of Maltise Cross. You've got a really neat idea there. Of course we all want to see how it turns out.
