Spittin Mad at "progress"

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I am venting here, because I am spitting mad. Last night, my neighbor brought me in his back yard to see the result of a dish network installation in the yard behind our houses...a one hundred year old tree was trimmed, if you can call it that, more likely described as massacred. The building owner was out there supervising the destruction, and when my neighbor inquired why so much of this tree was being cut down, the landlord responded that it was necessary to install the dish for his tenant. What the hoot?! My neighbor was also told that it wasn't any of his business, and although legally it isn't, it is disheartening that "progress" can replace a living thing. I tried to snap a pic to show the damage. The part of Buffalo I live in needs all the trees it can get, we lost quite a few to Dutch Elm disease years ago, and nothing cools things off in the summer better than the shade of a giant tree. I am just sick. The landlord also left all of the cut branches piled in the back of this yard, which buts up aginst mine, and as I was standing there, a friendly little rat came running towards me and then doubled back into the woodpile.
It reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw, something like " when we cut down all the trees we'll name the streets after them."
Thanks for listening, I just had to get it out.

I hope that 'tenant' has the sun blaring in his windows all summer long and winds up wishing the tree limbs were still there!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks guys...I wish I had a before shot...the giant limbs went all the way over into the yard to the left, and you could barely see the house. The tree was really gorgeous.

Can you complain to the city for code enforcement about the brush pile? Here, they would make him clean it up to prevent rats. It is also a fire hazard, so maybe call the fire department to complain?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Excellent idea, Terre, I will have to do that first thing tomorrow morning!
I am also concerned with the health of what is left of the tree. Most of the left side is gone now, only part of the right remains.

Golden, CO(Zone 5b)

And they did terrible cuts on the tree itself. They should have cut up from the bottom, first, and not left those jagged stubs. And I see nothing on the open wounds to seal either. That landlord is a jerk. And a stupid one at that. That tree contributed more to his property value that the tenant or dish ever could.

Maybe if you are lucky, when the tree dies, it will fall on the house?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

LOL, oh how I wish. They did a lousy job from start to finish. Only two tall branches remain, and one of them surrounds wires, so I think that branch will be cut too, no doubt, by the electric, telephone or cable company. I can't imagine the poor tree then.
A few years ago I had a run in with electric company myself. They had a crew going through the back yards cutting/ trimming willy nilly. I asked the workers if they knew how to trim a tree properly. They confessed no, so I demanded that a manager come out before they cut any more. Sure enough, the next morning, the head of Forestry for Niagara Mohawk showed up at my door. I explained nicely the value of the trees, showed him how I thought they should be cut to serve both ends, and he respected my wishes. Seems these trimmers are often contracted out by the utilities around here, and they are clueless as to preserving nature.
I wasn't home when the landlord was cutting for this dish, but I tell you that I am just stressed out enough these days that I might have climbed that tree and refused to let him cut til the cops or TV stations came. LOL

Don't do that. It's difficult to play in the dirt when they have you in a room with padded walls.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

No, I really wouldn't, but the thought of me up there made me laugh!
You're right about that padded room, and it wouldn't have saved the tree either. LOL

I hope the jerk enjoys his dish....ours went out during every storm or windy day and we finally went with a buried cable hookup. What a sacrilege to take down a good sturdy tree, I'm sure they could have put the dish somewhere else if they had thought about it. Makes you wonder about people.....some folks around here have them sitting right out in their front yard. What price entertainment.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Looks like mounted on the chimney the dish would have cleared the tree. Maybe they would have taken out alittle of the top but they butchered it. We have dish but I was not going to sacrifice a tree for it. Our cable stunk.

Looks like they may have broken out the top window also. hehehe

I hope the tree lives. It sure looks ugly. A person up the street topped out 2 beautiful trees in their front yard. Nice victorian looking house with beautiful flowers. But whoever did those huge branches. Cut on one side half way through and then let them split down the middle at least 3 ft down. I have never in my life seen such a hatchet job. You couldn't seal these if you tried. I will try to get a picture of them.

My friend thought her DH did her red yip photina in and he did butcher them, but when I showed her these trees she almost passed out it is so horrible.
Some people don't have any sense.

Did you call about the branches? What did they say?

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

Is there no city code requiring tree trimmers to consider the health of the trees?
I know that in my town you would be ticketed big time for doing that to a tree...

High Springs, FL(Zone 8b)

Like Cearbhaill's area, we have "tree ordinances" that must be followed when trimming or taking down trees.

What a stupid loss......trees add so much. Our town has hit and miss messes when they deal with trees-sigh.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Well, spent most of the morning talking to various entities at City Hall, and our councilman. The usual response, give the landlord some time to clean it up, and we'll be out next week to take a look.
Your responses have made me feel better, but I admit, I'm still not a happy camper.
Thanks for making me feel that I'm not alone in being disappointed.

Do not forget to call them back next week. And I'd throw some rat poison into the brush pile, if it were me. But I get paranoid about rodents. Bubonic plague is fairly common in prarie dogs, & rats and every year some people get it. Not my idea of fun.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I called again today, and they have agreed to come out next week by Thursday.
We'll see. Set out some rat poison, one little rat down this evening, and who knows how many to go.
Set up several Vlad the Impailer Specials on the block.
Thanks everyone for listening.
