The Epis Are Here, The Epis Are Here!! 2005 PART FOUR

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Wow! If those ARE buds, you'll have lots of blooms. : )

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Darius. They seem rounder than the flatter new growth. I've got my fingers crossed!

Northern California, CA

They are coming fast and furious now! Clare I bet your bud is gonna be a Memorial Day blossom!

And your leaves sure look like they have a bunch of buds to me.

Remember the odd leaf with the spiny buds? http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1496801 That was on the 25th and here it is today.

Clare, you are going to have lots of flowers there.. wow..

Happ, those are gorgeous, I love that shocking color..

If this June Gloom continues the flowers will stay open for days.. my last two were still open today.

All those blooms look great.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Ah, Candy, that one was worth waiting for all this time. Magnificent color! Very nice. How does it compare to your other pinks? Is the square stem the only difference you see between the flowers?

My pink is just starting to open and should be in full bloom by tomorrow.

Thanks, Antoinette, I am keeping my fingers crossed that these white night-blooming ones are indeed buds. The plant itself isn't much bigger than the original cutting. The other one, Padre, that you sent me is also about to open.

Hi Guys! I went ahead to ask for an Orchid Cacti Forum. Please lend your support or comments, positive or negative, to this thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/515472/ Thanks!

I am totally captivated by all these beauties-I think I'm hooked.
I have some rooted Lucky Bamboo-if anyone would like to trade rooted or unrooted cuttings of your beatuiful Epis.I have enjoyed looking at your pictures over & over again-they all are so pretty. Thanks for sharing your pictures with all of us.

Modi'in, Israel

Candy, that hot pink one is fantastic! I think I'm going to have to stop looking at these threads. Otherwise I'm gonna end up in a temper tantrum at not being able to trade with you all ROTFL!

Clare, how amazingly fun that your E oxy is going to bloom for you so soon! Yipppeeeeee! Be sure to post a pic of that pink one when it opens all the way! :-)

Mesilla Park, NM

Well Clare, I'm doing alot better with cactus than I did with Brugs.. guess I better stick to these with my kind of hot summers. It will be interesting to see Padre open up..

My Oxy is just growing some, nothing as far as buds though.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks CC, Julie, and Antoinette! Be sure to post your comments here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/515472/ about an epi forum!

Thanks, Julie, if it is any consolation, all of my epi's were started last year as one leaf cuttings and are not very big, and I dare not cut off any more than I have already. So you are not missing out from trading with me;-) Next year, I will be in a better position to trade cuttings, I am sure. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the new rounded growth are buds and not new growth.

Antoinette, brugs sure are demanding, large, and high-maintenance! I really like this low-maintenance factor with epi's.

Here is one that is supposed to be Saigon, but I may have to double check that.

Here is a side shot of Saigon:

Here is another Padre bud open today. Two little Padre buds bit the dust for some reason.

Yes, it is Saigon, but I thought the flowers were supposed to be small on Saigon, and these are not small! They are lovely.

Shocking Pink is a good name for the one with the "spiney" buds! The flower from outer petal tip to outer petal tip is almost 9 inches, so not only are the buds different, the flowers are bigger than the other "big" pink, the leaves are triangular in form, it is very pickery, has no aroma, and it just plain looks different with its red back petals. The other thing is the buds developed later and very quickly in comparison to the other pink hybrids I have.

I have a number of these yet to come and one other unknown going to be red or pink that is mixed in with the white ones. I am tagging them this year and will be repotting all of them when the bloom cycle is finished. In addition to these old-timers, three of the cuttings from Epis by Pat now have small buds! Now that would be excellent.....I need to pull out the paper work and try to deciper which ones have buds. The black marker is faded, but I think I can probably remark them from what remains.

'Saigon' is just wonderful and good to see 'Padre' again too!

Julie - I think you need to get next to some gov't official to get a special dispensation to bring in some Epi cuttings! You know we'd all love to send some your way. :(

Not an Epi, but another surprise in the garden today.....I had about given up on this one, as it has been in the ground for 14 months and this is the first bloom for 'Coral Seas' Passiflora.

Bring on the Epis!

Just checked the papers that came with my order from Epis by Pat last year and the three that have buds are:
'Hot Lava'
http://www.epies.net/cgi-bin/evoque?evoque.id+984878036

'Ruth' - described as Striped Orange (couldn't find it on the website anymore)
'You're The One' - described as 1st row lavender tips in red down one inch the 1 inch in cerise, then 3 rows all red. outer petals red orange, overlapping cup and saucer.

Jasper Co., MO(Zone 6b)

I notice the epi blooms so pretty!
It kind little orange, red and pink.

Here is Saigon again today. She is a very bright pink.

Thanks to all who posted on the DG Forum in support of our own forum.

For those who want to trade with me, I just started collecting epi's last year, and I don't have any growth to cut from at this time:-) Epi cuttings are really inexpensive. Epies by Pat is a good place to get started: http://www.epies.net/

Well! My white epi is now down to one bloom left. My son cut the yard yesterday and didn't see the one wandering on the grass. I guess the bunnies got the other three. I am watching my remaining one so I can get a picture of it sob, sob. That's the way it is w/ gardening tho. Like my Mom used to say--"chicken one day, feathers next" Marilynne hagd all

Northern California, CA

So pretty Clare!!

Ok.....I've held off as long as I possibly can. Remember I am the world's worst speller???? But is no one gonna comment on Julie's typo?????? Totally cracked me up.

Quoting:
....that Psssiflora is eye-popping! WOW!

Me? comment on smelling? No yaw. Marilynne

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Candy, check out "You're the One" at this link: http://www.ecology.org/orchids/index5.html#Epis Your Passiflora is beautiful! About "Psssiflora," we knew what she meant! LOL! I thought it was cute!

Northern California, CA

Awww gee Marilynne......so sad about the mower. I might have had to smack the kid! LOL

**********
Taking a break from "The Bright & The Beautiful"......here are some mystery plants.

Plant #1 purchased with the generic "cactus & succulents" tag 2 years ago. Moved from a six inch plastic hanging pot into a 12" fiber lined hanging metal basket. Moved to a large pot today.....am I just hoping that this is E. oxy? I'm afraid to even type the full name for fear of putting the kabosh on it. :-)

The plant obviously didn't like the cold temps in the greenhouse this year, was quite yellowed and sad by early Spring, but is recovering and greening up now that we are getting some warmer weather.

Ursula are you out there? Anyone else want to hazard a guess?

No flowers or buds as yet.

And plant #2 purchased last year, same 6" plastic hanging pot, moved to a large pot today.

Could it be another E. oxy?

Hi Clare -

That 'You're The One' is just like the picture Pat sent me with the cutting....I couldn't get the page to load yesterday and kept getting Java script errors. Got it to load today.....I think that's the cutting that has a couple of buds on it. :-)

Candy, yes, I'd say they are both Epi oxy. The growing pattern and thin leaves seem to match.

Kelli, those are wonderful flowers! Great plant!

Marilynne, your epi is lovely.

Here are 2 pictures of what I thought was my oxy but I think it's strictum instead.

I agree -- E. strictum. Are your flowers fragrant? Some say E. strictum's flowers are fragrant, and some say they are not.

Mesilla Park, NM

SEE now I have to get some whites here. Those are really neat and big. I like the fact that they have fragrance too.
