The Epis Are Here, The Epis Are Here!! 2005 PART FOUR
Ah, lovely, Rusty!
Great color Rusty! Wish we could get them to last longer than a couple of days, but maybe if they were easy and long lasting we wouldn't be so enthralled with them. :-)
Candy, those buds on yoru prickly pink look like they are going to result in a stunning bloom! I can't wait to see them open!!!!!!
Rusty, yours is a lovely color! :-)
-Julie
Rusty you are getting them one after the other! Love them.....Rainbow looks like a really special one.
Not much to report on this end. I'm deadheading the old blooms on my pinks twice a day now. With the warmer weather they don't last but about 48 hours. Believe it or not these are not the same flowers I have been showing you ...... same pot, different flowers! LOL
Wow! deadheading Epis twice a day! Boggles the mind! Well, MY mind anyway ROTFL! I'm not wishing 20 years of my life to whiz by, but at least I have something to look forward to in my garden LOL.
-Julie
Very pretty, Rusty!
Candy, your pinks are breath-taking. When you deadhead, where do you make the cut?
These aren't in bloom, but I had to show you my new container called "Ursula's container." Ursula sent me some lovely epi's along with some other treasures. Don't let the large container alarm you. The bottom third is river rocks, the middle third is pure Perlite, and the top third is well-draining cactus mix. Thanks, Ursula!
Cool! How fun!
Make sure you post pics when your little treasures bloom too :-)
-Julie
Rusty - Sooooo pretty!
Morning Clare -
I love your "Ursula" pot.....looks very southern France or northern Italy....love it! Lovely treasures, such fun!
I cut near the leaf end, but leave a little nub to dry up and fall off. If the whole flower is dry they will usually twist off easily, but I don't like to leave all the wilted blooms on the plants. They are sticky and wet and attract bugs IMO, but I also don't want to damage the leaf by cutting too close to the flowering point.
Rusty, how'd I miss your bloom?! Wow, that's gorgeous! :-)
-Julie
Thank you, Candy, for the deadheading info!
I just realized that that last one is on a three-sided leaf also.
LOL Clare......I bet there has never been such close inspection of individual Epi leaves in the history of growing them. I can tell you I've never looked at anything other than the flowers before this year. It's a learning experience and keeps me out of the nurseries!
Gorgeous color and flower, Antoinette! You have 'Calypso' which is supposed to be an extra large red. Could that be it? You also have 'Tel Star,' which is supposed to be an extra large dark salmon.
Ok,
I think that this was worth waiting 4-5 years for. No name. Just labeled "Red". 5 in across

Great pictures, Rusty and Budgielover!
Antoinette, that's really lovely!
Rusty, your white flowers look huge! Did you ever measure one of them?
budgielover, I agree....definitely worth the wait! :-)
-Julie
OOOOOOOOOoooooooo AAAAAAAAAaaaahhhhhhh! :-)
Oh me to Julie......ooooooooo and aaaaaahhhhh.
They are all so gorgeous! Congrats on great growing to Gourd, Rusty, budgielover and Clare!!
Clare - bright cherry red is good!
Sitting here looking at an empty bowl with Bing Cherry pits in it.....I do love cherries! Does anyone else remember an old wives tale about eating cherries and drinking milk at the same time would make you deathly ill? Never did figure out whether it was true or not, but I still never drink milk and eat cherries at the same time.
LOL, Candy. Thanks guys:-) Yes, cherry red is very good.
In our case, they told us kids not to drink water after eating Cherries or we would explode. Then we ate tons of Cherries. Of course we became VERY thirsty, had to drink LOTS of water. Then waited quietly in a corner - worried we would explode....SILLY!!!
This forum is absolutely wonderful!! I so enjoy looking at everybody's gorgeous stuff and read the comments.
Clare, thank you so much for your wonderful package !! I love it!
At the moment, due to a very chilly spring my Epis are about 2 weeks slower than normal. But they are budding, even the big Mama ( oxypetalum). Will take pictures when they are flowering!
Ursula

I spent about six summers as a child working for cherries. You've probably heard of "working for peanuts", but I guarantee working for cherries is a better deal!
Herr Brünig who lived next door was in his 80's and could no longer harvest the cherries from his Bing Cherry tree which was about 3 stories tall. He and I struck a deal in my broken German (I was about 6 years old) and as long as he got the cherries he needed to bake with, I could have as many buckets as I wanted.
What was my mother thinking! I was scrambling up and down that tree from then on. I accessed the tree from the top of a garden wall that was about 10 feet tall that adjoined Herr Brünig's garden. Buckets and buckets of cherries each summer. I used to take several buckets up into the tree with me and then leave them in strategic locations as I climbed higher and higher.
The attached picture is when I was about 9 and had just dropped a fully loaded bucket into my mother's Hydrangeas. Ooops. Buckets I dropped, but I never once fell out of the tree. :-) Even after we moved into a bigger town I would ride the street car out to see Herr Brünig and pick his cherries each summer. I still love Bing Cherries and the memories that go with them.
It's Epi-henge thanks to weegy12!
Received a very generous box of cuttings today, thank you soooo much! I'm excited to see this one grow and bloom. It even has little buds on it....perhaps if I'm very very good they will not mind having been chopped off their Mama and put in a dark box to ride around in trucks for a couple of days! LOL
So ala Stonehenge, here is Epi-henge!
Candy I really enjoyed reading about your cherry adventures. That is such a great photo! You can see the "OOPS!" so clearly on your face ROTFL!
What a cute pot of cuttings. I applaud your Epi-henge! :-)
-Julie
Candy, is that E. strictum? I am wondering if E. strictum has a fragrance. Does anyone know? Some say it does, and some say it doesn't. I love your Epi-henge! What a gorgeous arrangement! That is a great container too. Did you get that at your container place? I am so jealous and wish we had a discount container place down here in Southern California. HD wants a small fortune for their containers. That is a great picture of you and a great story. What a lovely memory.
Ursula, I think you are wonderful! I can't wait to see all of your blooms when they open. Your flowers will be the fireworks that ends the show perhaps!
And then we ought to talk Dave into an Epi Forum:-)
Oh, my, gosh, I am totally craving cherries now!
