Disinfecting plants we trade with others in USA & elsewhere

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

A few of us have questions about the best product to use to clean plants of any diseases/insects/soil borne problems/etc. The Asian Longhorned Beetle problem in New York and New Jersey, claiming the life of so many maples and no end in sight is just one reason for wanting to trade healthy plants and receive healthy plants. I use Clorox 5% or more solution but one person said to use Hydrogen Peroxide. Please help us all out and let us know what's best.

Thanks for raising this, Arlene. It's a topic I've been concerned with more and more lately as I widen the scope of plants I'm interested in having. I, unfortunately, have no answers to contribute at this point but look forward to hearing from some experts, too.

I've had no response from the Department of Agriculture. Any suggestions as to where I could look for answers?

I read this article yesterday too. It's something I know nothing about either, but do need to learn. How about a local County Extension office?

Good thought. I can try but I don't want to fool myself either. I've gotten more wrong answers than right ones from them. They each have their own niche, it seems, and I guess it would be unwise of me to expect they'd know everything. I'll let you know what I find out. It's so frustrating. We're trying to do the right thing and can't get any help here!

I just wrote to the Suffolk County Cooperative Extension Service and will keep you posted on their recommendations.

No answers from anyone. How disappointing!

Sorry, I've been too busy to do any writing. I'll try as soon as things slow down.
