Whoops lol I stand corrected!! I now remember it's a standard that comes off the root. (and I thought, someone correct me if I'm wrong, lol...but the straight up stems make GREAT standards and/or trees too) And I can't believe I couldnt remember that word! 'Standard' ,,,,,,,,,,,,geeeeesh!
Jnette & Sherry.... lol.... let's write a 'Brug book for Dummies', by Dummies LOLOLOL eh?!!!! I'm psyched! In the meantime...I'll be looking to get Monika's book for Christmas...is it sold in Bookstores I wonder?
Good Morning!
Monika's book regarding soil
I'll edit txhat! LOL
OMG!! I cannot believe it, I got something right, I believe it's the first time since I've been on DG, learning about brugs, AND, it only took 1 year and 9 months. At that rate, give me another 15 or 20 years and I'll be an expert for sure, lol!!!
Julie, Susie has Monika's bood, or did and possibly MaryinLA. It's a great book and despite being a small book, I've read it over and over and learn something new each time.
Thanks for joining us Kell, it's been a long haul but we are sifting through stuff and might be getting someplace, even if it's back to go, lol...
OK.. Lets see if I have the terms correctly.. :)
Sucker- a shoot that comes up from either the base of a plant or from the roots a small distance from the plant. Brugs usually sucker from the base.
Sport- a sucker that has genetic differences from the "mother plant" ie varigation or lack of color or some other major difference
Seedling- A plant that grows from a seed. Not called sports since you never know what the genetic mix of the two plants can produce other than disappointments and the occasional wonderul surprize.
Standard- Any brugmansia that grow straight and tall like a tree vs a bush. Can happen with a sucker
have I got it ?
By George.....I think you've GOT IT!!! That's it, great info to retain....not sure if I can retain like I used too but,.....um well I proved that in the above post didn't I ??? LOLOL
Woohoo.. Printing off and pasting to wall so I can refer to it during my sometimer's moments
OK now that's what I needa do...thanks for the idea Jazz lol, lemme do it before I forget!!
LOL..
'Standard' is a forced shape through pruning. Your tree roses are a good example. Selecting a main straight stem then after a certain height removing all side branches and suckers so you get a tree form. In the world of topiary, rosemary is a popular plant to do that with. I've done it with pelargoniums and seen coleus even done like that. I have a couple of cherry bushes that I've pruned into multi-trunk tree (standard) forms because they have good bark.
You guys got that???? Or did you forget already? LOL
Yes Sherry, here's a nickle. A wooden one. LOL.
Kell, where is that stuff coming from that you can get it shipped for $4?? I'll take 2!! Must be across the street from you. When I buy stuff the shipping is more than the item purchased. I think I am going to own the post office.
Yes Julie, I got 2 of her books from Calalilly. One for me and one for my daughter for Christmas. She is really good about getting them right out.
I have even seen coleus as a standard. Amazing to see a coleus with a trunk!
I call them lollipop trees. I love that shape. If I see a different tree in that shape I can't resist getting it. You can underplant them which is great for a small garden. I do vertical gardening so have different heights of standards to get the most packed in.
I checked my pinched brug, and it did bloom on the second set of y's like described above. They went into the second Y very quickly. The second blooming is still going on, was probably the best quantity of blooms I've had on a yearling.
I'm going to check out the link for the volcanic soil. I will also include a picture of the volcanic sand I'm using tomorrow, for all of those interested in what this particular brand looks like.
Rj
Good point, rj!!! I've been meaning to mention that when the broken, or in your case pinched, Y forms, the next Ys start pronto pup, I even have one Y that is three sided, I have never heard or seen such a Y, but I suspect it's common...I swear I'm not interested in the volcanic soil, but you know darned well that I'll end up with some...
Judy, good sleuthing! I went to that site, and so far that is closest to what we are looking for as described by the Hawita products description. It has the trace elements included, and thought it's not a 3 layered clay like Europes Hawita products, it's close enough. I'm going to give it a try, but will still continue to use the Volcanic Sand as well.
Rj
Kell, I don't know what I did wrong, or right, but when I filled out that order form for 20 lbs it was $24.20 plus $5 for handling. Did you do the bottle? maybe that is the difference.
Also, Kell, I have never seen a Coleus grow to be a tree. How tall do they get? Were they the big leafed ones, or the small leaves? That would be pretty cool but you would either have to be in your area or have a pretty big house. When we were kids we grew a lot of those plants.
Sherry, I have never named one item that you didn't either have, or run out and get. LOL you know you HAVE to have some of that Volcanic sand.
Jeanette
Oh, Jnette, I'm notorious, to the point that my pals/family bring me all kinds of odd stuff for gifts or just something they see that they think I'll like and, I'm a fool for gadgets too. Last week, my brother gave me a small laser, with a red light and when you move it around for the cats, the go nutz and do backward flips in the air, behaving like energetic drunks, lol. So, yes, I'm sure it will happen, and I'll end up with volcanic sand. This spring, my nephew brought me a sack of potting soil with that stuff that makes it absorb water and I used it on my poor bougainvillea, four pots, that looked horrid, and the minute they got the water stuff they started blooming and have bloomed all summer, and I've never been able to grow them previously, and keep them blooming...
Kell.. If you like standards that much you would love my veggie garden.. I only harvest the lower largest leaves off my leaf lettuce rather than the entire head, and it keeps growing up and ends up looking like a row of palm trees lol
I tried that link and it didn't work for me :(
I fixed the link if you are talking about the volcanic clay.....Judy
Yes it was.. Thank you :)
LOL Jeanette, NOOOOOOOOOO. I went to the order form
http://www.earthplusproducts.com/html/printform.htm
and it said $4 to ship. I knew that had to be wrong so I emailed them to ask the shipping cost. No answer. And I emailed them again last night to see if there were any local places I could get AdzsumPlus from. For now I am just desperate for this. LOL. I am so funny!!! I just love new stuff.
The coleus standards are mini trees. They look so odd having a thick woody stem. Here is an article about it. They are small lollipops.

Laura, I would love to see your lollipop lettuce. LOL I bet they are too cute.
Kell when you order it, is the shipping coming up as 4.00?..If so why dont you just let it go through that way ...I would think they would have to honor what comes up in the process?...Im heading back there for a phone number for you...this place is in Michigan up north from me..Judy
Here is teh phone number to the place that sells the adzsumpro......Judy
231-378-4726
Tell them Judy sent you and they are going to wonder who the heck is that....lolololololololololol....
No, Judy. The $4 is on the preprinted form you mail in to order.
Ohhh I was trying to see through the online ordering..I didnt go through the whole thing since I didnt want to order online...no way should it be so expensive to ship.....Judy
Duh..I just looked at the paper order sheet and there is a 1-800 number..call them and see....?...Judy
Kell, let me know if you get any response from them? $30 is way too much. But, I guess it depends on how much you have to use on each plant, and how often to you use it? Sounds like you just use it with the soil on the initial planting.
Jeanette
hI, All - I'm jumping in here too cause I am also now lusting after this stuff. GEEZ..why am I such a sucker for anything new???
Anyway I posted yesterday that they wanted $18 + $5 to ship it to CT. I just can't stand to be overcharged on shipping so I faxed them a note yesterday asking who sells it near me or what can we do about the shipping. no answer. So today I tried calling the number on the order form. answering machine. So I RE-faxed the letter from yesterday on which I wrote in big letters: PLEASE RESPOND! nothin so far. sigh. Judy - I guess you are gonna have to go buy 40 or 50 bags and ship them out to us. LOL LOL LOL
Diane Krny
Yea, Judy. You best get busy. LOL
Maybe Judy needs to load up a truck and tour the country delivering. LOL, Jeanette
Okay, for all of you who find yourselves too busy to read the directions on the AdzsumPlus, let me make it convenient for you http://www.earthplusproducts.com/html/howtouse.htm
This should give an idea how much. :) I ordered some yesterday.
I know, we can swap all of our old products with one another :::)))
Rj
So, rj, what did it cost to ship it to you? Did you get the #20? You know, instead of getting that 20 # one maybe I will just get the small one to try it. Will see what shipping is on that.
Jeanette
Their order form is very misleading. You don't find out what the total cost is with s&h until you give them all of your informtion except your payment method. I just looked and the 2# would cost me $26.20.
Jeanette
I know...I tried to find the shipping before I ordered, and found had to find out in the end too. I only ordered the small container- It seemed from the directions that you could make it go for a ways. I just tried to find my order, (yes I have a whole file in my email for orders) and couldn't find it!
The 20 lb bag ..yes costs more to ship than the product!
Rj
Guess you are going to have to be the trial for all of us unless Sherry springs for some. (and she will) LOL. Jeanette
Shut. Up. Jnette. I have multiple buds without volcanic whatever, and, I've only spent 3k, this growing season, so far, LOL!!! I don't 'understand' the volcanic stuff, but, I used the MG moisture control 'stuff', called potting soil, that set up like moisturized peat moss, with body, and all the plants I used it with have done unusually well during this dry growing season...
It costs $26 to send 2 pounds???
That MG has done real good by you then Sherry. You don't need that volcanic sand. (snicker) Just teasing you. You're a good sport.
Yes Kell, with handling too. I looked at the printout form you looked at and I really think it is terrible of them to put it that way. Because there is no way you would think anything other than you did, that that was the shipping.
Jeanette
Hey, I told Kell that if she sends me a plane ticket I can bring her all the 20 pound bags up to the 2 suitcase limit...lolol...well I could stuff one in my backpack too...lolol....Im going to pot up some brugs with this stuff today and leave them seperate from my other brugs..I will see if the growing speed is faster ...Judy
If you live in Michigan the stuff is all over the place! sheesh.. I have friends that go to Michigan frequently.. I may see if they can smuggle some back for me!
Whats funny is that the place I found it at doesnt have their name on the list...the company is north of us about 100 miles..the towns around that area have it plus Grand Rapids which is about 45 miles from me...the guy at our nursery said they are a very nice family.....wish I could help you guys.....Judy
