BLACK ELEPHANT EAR

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

My son is moving and has a black elephant ear in his yard. It was given to him and he had no idea how to plant of care for it. I intend to move to my garden and I am wondering if it can go to the pond area? My pond has sun most of the day. Any help and suggestions on caring for this plant will be appreciated. Thanks Jim

Jim, I know they are supposed to be able to go in the pond, but I killed mine ($$). Good luck, I'm sure it will be gorgeous!!!

tiG,I think I will divide (if I can) and put part in the pond and part in another bed to be on the safe side. How did you kill yours?

I just put it in the pond, not really sure if it drowned, they are supposed to be able to take the water, or if it got too much sun. It was several years ago, and I really for sure don't remember:)
Good luck with both ways!! Let us know which does best.

I have a black elephant ear and I just planted it in the dirt and it is doing good.Keith

Jim, have one in the pond right now and it is growing great! The top of the pot is about 1" below the surface. I won't chance leaving it in the water for the winter tho.

As for the division you may decide to plant in the ground, according to my Plant Delights catalog, 'Black Magic' overwintered in ground just fine...surviving 0 degrees in Raleigh NC zone7.

I bet I had mine too deep. I did what the lady told me too, but I can see in my mind now that it was deeper than that.
