Coffee and... Part 15! : )

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Robert,

Darius makes wonderful marmalades. Just had some this morning on my toast with breakfast.

Darius, I got in the cupboard to find some more jars to share with my db & sil and found the Pickled Red Onions. Yum Yum, going to try that tonight.

:^)))

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Yummmmmmmy
I'll have some on SonIL's baked bread. He makes great bread. I brought this last fresh loaf to share. It's something he only does in the cooler months. AND it's still warm from the oven. ohmy I do just l u v -- oven warm bread is a favorite.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Ohhh, Blooms! I JUST LOVE fresh warm bread straight from the oven!

Darius,

TY TY for the pectin link.

I've been wondering for quite awhile if I could make jelly with stevia . YAAAAAAYY!!!

(Zone 7a)

GOBs, have fallen behind again - just wanted to wish Julie a successful morning tomorrow. Just think how much more you'll enjoy flowers and gardens and sunrises this year :)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

sarv, use cold on muscle soreness, but only for 10 minute sessions with at least half an hour between. If you don't have any ice handy, a bag of frozen veggies works great. Localized heat will bring the blood to that area which will make any swelling and stiffness MUCH worse.

Julie, we're praying for you!!

Julie, hope all goes well. Won't it be good to be able to read these messages without squinting at them!

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Hello everybody, I'm,just checking in here after a few days absence. First I was busy for a couple of days, then gone to another endurance ride over the weekend. I took Patch who successfully completed a 50 mile ride (his first) about a month ago but this time he was lame after 39 miles so got a ride back to the base camp in a trailer and we got nothing for our efforts except a great workout! The lameness is a minor type of problem compared to problems with tendons, so I should be able to start riding him slowly and carefully after about a week. Meanwhile, he gets a daily dose of Bute, an antiflamatory often used for arthritis patients both four legged and human.

The weather before the ride had been rainy for several days turning an otherwise prefect trail into slick mud which made it a lot more work for the horses with slipping and sliding plus the extra weight of gobs of mud on their hooves, so Patch really did spend about the same amount of energy as if he had done all 50 miles. A lot of horses had problems with it so the horse trailer made several trips from the vet check on the trail to base camp. There was a lot of excitement at this ride caused by rider stupidity, one rider had a loose cinch and the saddle slipped, the rider went off, the horse headed back to camp in panic mode on a single track trail with the saddle under his belly. Along the way 2 other riders and horses parted company, one horse ran through and flipped over a barbed wire fence and got all cut up. Two of those riders went to the hospital, one had broken ribs and a collapsed lung. I didn't hear about the condition of the other one. The injured horse was stiched up and taken care of by the ride vets and will heal up ok.

Another exciting thing that happened was that 2 new ignorant hot shot riders showed up and went racing down the trail scattering riders as they went. Nobody was hurt there but since I was one of the riders that had to get out of the way of these two fools who had no regard for the safety of others, I am on a mission to stop them from ever being allowed to enter another ride without being promised disqualification if they do this again. I suggested to the ride manager that they didn't deserve anything this time but evidently they need to be warned before that can be done. I was sitting there waiting for the awards to be given out this morning but apparently the Lord didn't want me there so He unzipped a cloud and suddenly it seemed more important to stay dry than to find out first hand what was said to them when the awards were presented. I wasn't getting anything anyhow because I didn't finish the ride.

It took me a while to read about 4 days of posts and I recall parts of it all. Somebody was talking about some not so good soup in a restaurant. This is what my DH refers to as "sink trap soup".

Julie, my prayers will be with you and your surgeon tomorrow. Let us know how you are as soon as you can.

Daruis, UMMMM, marmelade! I have some I made a few years ago and I have been rationing it ever since because I want unsprayed peels to make it with and I'm not sure where I can get any more of them.

Robert, are you using cedar shingles? They are quite an investment but sure look pretty. Got any more updated pictures? Welcome home to your DW.

Sarv, sleepless in Caledonia doesn't have quite the same ring to it as Sleepless in Seattle.

Blooms, the cat picture is hilarious. He?she does indeed look like killing somebody just because.......

Time for bed, I think I'm loosing it.

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Apparantly, the owner [a southern lady, with a heavy accent] asked for a 'line cut' to help prevent the long hair picking up burrs while on a visit in Connecticut. The groomer thought she said "Lion cut" -- and the cat wasn't the only one upset. ROFL

How awful !

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Mary, what a nice post about your ride, Made it more real by telling of mishaps along the way. Sorry you didn't finish, but there's always another one.

Julie, getting geared up to send EXCELLENT vibes your way mañana!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Ran out of the cedar shingles yesterday but the rains came and it worked out OK. Have a new batch, but rains are expected all week. Can use a rest anyway.
Mary, those endurance rides sound pretty dangerous, especially when a couple hot rodders do dumb things.
As the photo indicates, only a little more to shingle in the front, then off to the back!

Robert, you do great work, would never know the window had ever been any different. You be a 'keeper'./

Mary, one doesn't usually 'run' a horse on these rides does one? I thought those 'hell bent for election' rides in the movies were the exception not the rule. hard on the horse ya know, sort of thing.

Would you believe we have a frost warning out for tonight and I have already stuck out a ton of annuals. I don't know if I have enough sheets to cover everything= grrrr - this spring has been a real trial!!

Just got back from the exercise joint - only going for two more weeks - gonna take the summer off (although we may not have a summer up here this year!!) I have good intentions of walking daily (we'll see...)

Mary - what a wild time!! Do you do this as a hobby? I think those hot shot riders should be banned = that was just too dangerous!! What in the world were they thinking?? Were they young and a little short on the brains??

Bal - those shingles look great - I just can't get my butt in gear to accompolish anything lately - just love to sit and read. I keep blaming it on the weather! When the warm weather comes, I will probably say 'it is too hot!!"

I did manage to sleep from 1something am to 5:30am - quite a stretch for me. I did get up and take three aspirin around midnight, as I had been laying awake for a long time!! Anyone tried tylenol pm???

Just ate a yogurt- I am trying to eat a little more healthy this week. I can't tell you how eating crummy, makes me feel awful. You'd think I'd learn!! Have a great one everyone@

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Good morning. That's looking really good, Robert. You must have been going up and down that ladder a lot cutting each shingle with an angle. I know from experience that every one along the upper edge is different. When we remodeled a shingle sided house I ran the saw and cut the shingles. Hubby was on the ladder, measured, told me how long to cut it and I handed them up one by one. They could have been cut several at a time I guess but there were windows and doors to fit them around and we didn't want to waste anything.

The normal pace on one of these endurance rides is a trot. They were cantering pretty fast (didn't appear to be racing each other) and couldn't have gotten their horses through the vet check at the end if they had kept it up for a long time. The horses heart rate must be down to 60 beats per minute within 30 minutes after finishing. This incident happened on a jeep road that became a cow trail later, so they would have slowed down for that since cow trails twist and turn. The problem was that they were going much faster than the horses they were approaching from behind and that tends to scare horses who then get excited and do dangerous things. Riders comming up from behind need to warn those in front so we can get out of the way safely, then pass slowly so nobody gets dumped. These riders did none of that. My horse was already reacting to their fast approach when I heard a shout from another rider behind me who had just been passed by these idiots.

Sarv, if you want that yogurt to be really healthy get the plain kind like the health food stores sell and add fresh fruit to it. Those flavored yogurts contain a lot of sugar and stabilizers in them. Also food coloring and preservatives which aren't good for us either. It seems a real contradiction to take a healthy food, add chemicals and call it healthy. Also, for your sleeping problem, spend some time reading labels for the Tylenol PM, the store brand equivalent of it and then read the decongestant formula. In many cases it is all the same thing. A pharmacist told me to take decongestant instead of a sleep aid. You can buy some of that in bottles of 100 much cheaper than getting the blister pack or the bottles labeled for sleep. The help of the pharmacist is important because they have behind the counter products that are not prescription only. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride the active ingredient in the one we use. Keep in mind that consumers pay a lot for the advertising.

I need to get outside, pull some weeds and stretch some muscles while it isn't raining. See you later.

Hi everyone...the first surgery is over. (The doctor thinks he's a cardiologist - in short he might be good at his job ...that's what counts...but he's a JERK!) I just loved they way they give you a sedative then tell you to keep your eyes OPEN. Yeah, Right!

Thanks so much for the thoughts, prayers and good vibes from everyone. Trust me, they definitely did their job. My BP in prior to surgery was 108 over 84. LOL You guys are going to have be careful praying for me to "be calm" :-D

Anyway, I've got a pretty good headache and right now the vision in the eye with the new lens is very cloudy. I expect it will take a while for all the meds to wear off before I'll have any idea of the changes the procedure made.

I'm going to take a nap for a while...didn't get much rest last night. Talk to you later on (...or tomorrow)

Did you know that if you bounce a very sharp long-bladed serrated slicing knife off the counter and it catches your leg on the way down, it will leave a series of tiny cuts looking like someone poked you with a toothed blade? LOL.

None were deep, none bled much, but the pattern is funny. All my previous cuts have been just that, cuts either long or short. Never had a patterned one before!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Isn't that carrying culinary artistry a little too far???????? The logging supply stores sell great protective chaps for chain saw workers, but I don't think they come in pink, or colors to match those pretty tie-dyed stockings.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

LOL, Robert! I can just see me in the kitchen with chain-saw chaps!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

What the heck! There's Oven Mitts and Pot Holders, so how about Darius' Gourmet Decorative and Protective Kitchen Wear?. One might draw the line at steel toed footwear, unless of course a person is using cast iron utensils. Just a thought, with a few giggles tossed in.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

I'd do the happy dance for you too Julie but my feet hurt from shopping all day. OK if I do a happy wiggle??

Shingle job looks fantastic!! You are going to have one happy bride, Robert!

Haven't tried that knife throwing trick Darius, but once I was using a mandoline to slice onions and took the tip off my middle finger...my DS exhibited great sympathy for my plight, which he demonstrated by screaming, "DON'T BLEED IN THE ONIONS!!!"

Julie, my eye surgeon wasn't a jerk, he was a ......body orifice. He was very good too. Maybe the one follows the other. Take it easy Julie, by next week everyone will expect you to be back to normal, so take advantage of your Serious Medical Procedure and get in some constructive loafing. I had to go back to work two days after I had my first eye done. My kind and thoughtful (read body orifice) boss cut my workload in half for the remainder of that week. Like I could read documents at half speed....? Problem being my vision was 200/20 in the eye that wasn't done.....and the one that was, hadn't gotten to reading status yet.

Now if only I could get back to normal, whatever that was.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Robert, love the gigggles! I can just see it now, "Designer Gourmet Decorative and Protective Kitchen Wear"!! (Comes in black & white checks, or pure white for purists. Blood Red Dots extra.)

M5, have to laugh... I too sliced off the tip end of a finger on my mandoline... but JUST ONCE! I learned better very quickly, and I am much more cautious now, LOL. No one was around to tell me not to bleed into whatever I was slicing, though. It was pickled red onions.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

What is this mandoline thing? How could it cut you, you're sposed to put your fingers on the strings, pluck it and sing blue grass songs.

That is for you newbies,,,,,,,,,,,Certified Executive Chef.....
That certification is next to my Guiness World Record,,,,so no kiddin'
And at the present time, I AM working as an executive chef....so there!!!

Protective clothing is very important in the kitchen. We have thermal glove, to 500 degrees that go up the the elbow. Long pants are required at all times. (or I will send you home, ask Lee)
No jewelry for that heats up very fast next to a 1500 degree broiler. The purer it is the faster your piercings get bigger. Watches are also a no no because they have been know to be melted into wrists when boiling oil is administered.... And yes, some of us do wear still tip boots.........can you imagine what 200lb frozen carcass feels like from a 10' hook in the air?

I actually were a space suit..........

Molly. a mandolin is a slicer. They were sold for years at carnies on the midway...It Slices, It Dices.....etc ad nauseum.... until you got it home....

And designer wear........honey, you ain't designer until yo paid $300+ for a custom made chef coat with your name embroidered on it.

I have the red hot chilli pants for $6.00...e-bay....

Yes, Balvene, we have cast iron cookwear...........how do you think they get the real blackened food so nice?

But Darius.....WE DO NOT RECOMMEND BOUNCING KNIVES...................hope you are ok...

Any other questions?

Darius...That wasn't your finger tip that was found in the Wendy's Chilli was it...LOL

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

I too lost a finger tip to slicing.... cabbage into sauerkraut was my job that morning. Waay back when I was fourteen and on my first job help for a caterer. Boy that lady could cook.

Anyway the slicer is a wooden framed board thingy with a series of blades. It comes with a holder for when the cabbage got down close to the blades. I wsn't using it. ouch.

My daddy had one of those old kaurt slicers....dangerous thing now that I think of it.....but it does explain the ocassional red cabbage slaw....

I was looking forward to a big breakfast until I came here - now dry toast and tea...

No frost last night - after I spent 2 hrs putting covers on everything - now another couple of hrs taking all the coverings off - sigh....

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

sarv, Excedrin P. M.s work much better than Tylenol P.M.s but don't buy the ones with the white back nor the caplets. (The white backs are hard to see, look at the box carefully). Just the coated round blue ones. It seems the binder alone makes a difference in how well the medication works.
I also found that exercise during the day helps me sleep better, even if it's just a walk.
I am doing the happy dance too. After years of procrastination, the historic preservation commission got the city of Brevard to designate 2 homes as local historic landmarks. This will be a total of about $4,000 in tax revenue loss, but both these structures went up so high in valuation after rehabilitation, that 50% tax deduction still leaves them paying as much or more than before the designation. I had to do the presentation with a power point assist and boy!, was I ever nervous. Weirdly, I make jokes when I'm nervous. Archives was discussed and I told the council that at the turn of the 20th century there were 30 boarding houses in the county, for tourists escaping the heat of the low country but also malaria. Then I said, " I'm full of this kind of stuff, come see me in archives." They laughed.
Now....on to the county to get them to do the same. They will be much more reluctant. I am going to make an effort to get to know a few of these commissioners that I don't already know. I really dislike one of them. He talks, giggles, elbows the commissioners sitting beside him and generally has made up his mind about every issue without even listening. But I think the county would be embarrassed to not participate in local designation since we are a county committee and operate under statutes adopted by the commission. Also, they don't want to be out-done by the city.
Ain't politics wonderful??

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Good for you woodspirit....I am not the politicky kind...in fact just the reverse...makes my spine tingle...but you are needed to make up for wimps like me. Go get 'em girl..

Hap

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Turns out that the finger in the chili was a case of attempted fraud.......but the question still is, where did the finger come from? Darius???? LOL I only did that trick once too, considering I'm a slow learner that's exemplary. I tried a little bluegrass on my mandoline, Molly, ( I Saw Her Little Footprints in the Snowwwwwwwww) but it can't carry a tune. Like me. I bought mine when the Frugal Gourmet series was on tv, and there were products with his "brand" on them, and it's lasted for years. It has one of those toothy grabbers to hold whatever you are cutting but I always have to have my hands in things. I've learned to push my bracelets up under my cuffs when I'm stirring stuff too as they can heat up quickly. Don't know what I was thinking a couple weeks ago when I tried to move my Foreman grill and caught the underside of my wrist on the HOT part. Nice big blister. Sorry, Sarv....I think we ruined your breakfast!!

It's another gray yucky day here, but I think I'm going to go out and scratch in some seeds anyway. It's not too cold. Bought another climber at Home Depot. DH said "Now where are you going to put it??" Man has no imagination. LOL
