My grandmother's alley used to have hollyhocks and other carefree plants growing in it. The people in her neighborhood kept their alley well groomed -- grass was trimmed, weeds kept at bay, fences and gates in good repair.
I am currently working on beautifying my "alley" (a small road leading to the back of a church parking lot) -- taming the weeds, and planting some pretty carefree flowering plants -- there are already some daffodils and tiger lilies left by previous owners, they just need to be divided and cared for a little bit. I just transplanted a large hardy hibiscus. I also plan to plant some lavender and Boltonia, and maybe some daylilies.
Anyone else keep a pretty alley? Use it for "overflow" gardening? Composting? Vegetables?
Or do you not have alleys in your town?

Gardening in Allies
We have alleys in our town, but not one on our block. I think it depends on what section of town you live in. I'm on the South Hill. I know on the Northside they have alleys. When I lived up there, we had a problem in our alleys. Years ago some gangs from California came up here and they were doing their graffiti (blue or red) on our garages and fences. It was a big deal for awhile, and now I never hear anything about it. Maybe they just weren't able to give it a good go here which is alright by me!
