defoecat, we already have a "name"... GOB's (Glorious Old Broads & 'Boys' although that is not meant to insult our male participants). Maybe we can find a better "B" word for men that doesn't seem to indicate they are wet behind the ears?
Robert, we enjoy your visits, and LOVE that you bake!
Coffee and...part 14 :-D
I got it, I got it: Broad's and Brawn's Darius
Cool, Molly!! : ) I really like it, but let's see if everyone else agrees, or may have other suggestions.
Arrrgh, I could spit nails. The woman who lives in the wing upstairs agreed to care for my culinary bay (tree) over winter along with our landlord's plants. I had noticed she has put his outside on his patio (the ones still alive), so I went looking for mine. (I have access to part of the upstairs.) I found it completely dried out, all the leaved drooping straight down. Brought it down and outside and watered it.
I've had that plant since it was a 5 inch seedling. Bummer if it dies. Hope I caught it in time.
Awww Geeze Darius,
So sorry to hear that. I hope it comes back for you.
Molly
:^)))
Molly, the ones I've seen this size in the nurseries are over $150. Maybe I can learn to do cuttings from it. It was a LOT bigger but I planted it in a protected bed outside 3 years ago, hoping it would survive. Lost 2/3 of it. But, it's a Survivor! (and probably root-bound now.)
HI, Dropping in early today, have to get to the library, but wanted to check in.
Darius, keeping fingers crossed for tree and you.
Woods-would you let us know when that book is published?-sounds wonderful.
m5-dog show? Didn't know there was one this week-end, will have to check paper; if it is raining would be a great place to go.
Fost last night, due again tonight. Drove past store that didn't bother to put their big baskets of ganzanias in last night-poor, droopy things.
Went on freecycle last night and was able to be one of 16 to pick up nice bag of hens/chicks-Yeah!!!
Will stop in again, want to run errands while Donna can monitor for phone calls from family..
See you all, maybe I should bake..that raspberry pie sounds great,..
darius, hope your bay makes it.It doesn't look too bad.
How about Broads and Buckaroos ? or just Glorious Old Broads,as a mascot,I don't need a moniker. Like the Bard once said,'a rose by any other name would still have aphids' or something like that.
LOL, Robert! I need that good chuckle about the Bard!
Bal- I go out in my pj's once the weather warms up - too bad for the neighbors - hope their eyesight is failing and if not, I really don't care..(it's not a see thru or anything, just a long cotton thing from lands end - very modest!)
Darius - is a bay tree where you get bay leaves??? Sounds right....Anyhow, hope it recovers for ya.
I have all the strawberries covered - heard the freeze is going as far south as Nashville TN. Put a portable heater in the greenhouse set on Low - I think it will keep everything safe. Tomorrow it is supposed to be sunny and in the 60's. Then even warmer the next few days - 80 on mother's day!! I'll take it!!
Yikes, my gums are all swollen and sore - wonder what could be the matter now. Hey, did anyone see Oprah today - it was all about what vitamins to take and what foods to eat. I do pretty good - just don't take the two baby aspirin they recommended. Maybe I'll try to remember that!
Neighbor just put in underground sprinkler for his wife (my gardening partner) I am so green with envy - I hate hauling the hoses all over and then winding them all back up. I mentioned it to DH and he immediately said NO -his ususal response, so I will mention it again in a few weeks.
Gotta go - news is on...oh it's chat time tonight isn't it???
Sarv, get DH to buy you a self-winding hose reel instead, since he won't pop for the bucks! They work on water pressure only, and look wonderful. Will reel in up to 200 feet of hose, effortlessly. There was a thread a couple of years ago on them here.
Yeah, my bay tree (really still a shrub) is for culinary bay leaves. Tastes much better/different than the dried turkish leaves, which are still pretty wonderful.
hi!
Just came over this way to reaD about Darius' health (!!) and noticed the question about making people feel open and involved. This looks like a really nice group of people having a good time! I post on Nite owls alot and really hope that it doesnt seem exclusive.?! I notice poeple have a hard time keeping up with all the chattin...... sometimes that aggrivates me but theres no real intentional harm is there? Atleast I HOPE not!. I think its probably a matter of whos talking the loudest in the room! LOL! but anyways, my hope would be to folks anywhere on DG to be OK about reading AND writing too! I really like reading about everybody and their goings on.... what a privelege.!
Anyhoo howdy ya'll :) Dont know if I can watch two threads all the time but Ill come by sometime with some suprise glazed donuts...... cheers. G2
Darius, we have a 2 acre lot, I will have to pace off from the water to my gardens. But a good thought with mother's day coming up!! That will be tomorrows chore.
I have an old box of bay leaves (got them 37 yrs ago) DO you think they are still good? I only throw them in a couple of receipes that call for a bay leave. I have a really BAD taster- everything tastes just fine to me. I never salt or pepper anything. My smeller doesn't work too good anymore either. Must be an age thing..
Greta - bring on the donuts!!! We are hogs here who love to eat....jump in and tell us all about your day or what ever...
Sarv, I think it's time for some new bay leaves. : ) Even though I keep my herbs and spices dark and cool, I replace them about every 2 years, or less, except the whole spices I grind as needed (like nutmeg). I buy them in bulk at the health food store, paying 1/10 of the bottled prices at the grocery stores. Hint: Keep the old bottles!
Off to make some supper before the Chat Room opens...
Mary E, the granddaughter of the old lady didn't show up today, maybe she'll come Friday.
I had to beg for two rooms, so don't expect more room. I don't care though because we're moving into the new library sometime in the fall. Building is on schedule. I am very excited. I will go from 700 square feet to 2200 square feet. The house was built in 1917. It has 33 rooms, 3 full baths and 3 half-baths. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. The family were involved in t he tanning and logging business. They harvested certain trees that had tannic acid in the bark, including the American Chestnut (wiped out by a blight in the 1920s here), Chestnut Oak and on other I have forgotten. The trees were sold for lumber. One company made hardwood flooring that was used in many homes, including the Biltmore House.
The Silversteen family had 3 daughters but none of them had children, so the last surviving daughter gave the mansion to the county.
There is a lot of intrique, a son-in-law that killed his first wife to marry one of the daughters, and the possibility that she died by her husband's hand, too.
Can't wait to read the whole thing............
Wooohooo the Silverstein family intrigues beat the heck out of ours!!! I'll have to make a side trip to see the mansion if I get out to visit my sister in N.C. Book sounds fascinating.
Made a pot of bean soup for dinner, threw in some sundried tomatos just for a little color, and bread almost ready to come out of the machine. Oh, did I screw up!!! Bought one of those packaged mixes just to try it out....pushed the wrong button and the next time I looked in the machine, the water was boiling around the edges!!! Grrrrr. Sounds like a new bride mistake! I'm not kidding when I say I'm technologically challenged!! Tossed the whole mess down the disposal, which still works...and started over from scratch. Geeeeeeeeez. Help yourselves to pie....my surprise visitors this afternoon sort of pigged out on it, but the pleasure of their company was well worth it.
Sarv, the trip with MIL sounds absolutely delightful compared to your other trips with her. Cherish the good ones! My first MIL was an absolute meanie, and I did more for her than either of her daughters, from perms to shopping, to providing a home. Was it appreciated. Nahhh. My girlfriend at the time used to refer to her as my German Housekeeper....which was far from the truth, she never lifted a finger in my house for the four centuries she lived with us. She did manage to march herself off to church for mass every morning, though.
Oops I mistyped, dog show is the weekend of the 13th, Mother's Day is this Sunday, so we are doing "cake day" for DD and DIL on Saturday, and saving the gift stuff for later. Weekend of the 13th is the birthday/anniversary/ etc. weekend. But I still don't have to do Mother's Day here.
I hear beeping from the kitchen which must signal something is done. Usually it's the smoke alarm. Maybe Balvenie can be a Gobette. Heeheehee.
He gave us the word... Broads and Bards see the above post. I like that better than Brawns. Yay Robert.
It's being fun having a house guest [girl friend] does cut down on DG time. We've had a coupla flower peeking rides, well stop and go.
Need a bumper sticker that says "stops for no apparent reason" We are NOT getting fields of wildflowers this year but are having some lovely flowers.
I don't know how y'all get so much done every day. I think I rattle from one chore to the next without ever quite finishing anything all too often. ~Blooms
Hey Blooms, that's called the But First Syndrome. Saw a joke about it, Going to the kitchen to do the dishes, but first I have to check the mail, then remember to pay a bill, but first, find a pen, but first etc etc. I think I have a serious case of it. Garden tools from Saturday's digging are still leaning on the front steps, but first...................
Good Morning, everyone!
Didn't even get to check in at our 'table' yesterday. I think I was stalling when I first got up because I could the solidly frozen birdbath out my window. Of course, to my way of thinking, that meant everything in the GH's would be 'crisp.' SOoooo...I cleaned my kitchen (don't you think it looks MUCH better now? VBG), tore the stove apart and generally dragged my feet until about 9:30.
I finally got up nerve enough to step outside...and even then I headed off to the opposite side of the yard.
When I *finally* decided to survey the damage, I was shocked to see that I'd lost very little...a few salvia, a couple of Magilla Perillas, and two or three strawflower plants were a bit mushy. All-in-all (as of yesterday morning...I'm NOT going out until the sun hits the GH area today! LOL) I guess I'm still "in business" with my seedlings.
Now for those lurkers, newbies, and the 'brawnie boys' who think we might be an exclusive little clique. HA! No way, peoples! We're in the PARKING LOT! Everyone talks to EVERYONE in a parking lot! Now, that's *why* I started this thread several months ago...I like talking! :-D And even more, I truly enjoy 'listening' to other people's stories, opinion, and daily goings on.
EVERYONE is welcome at our table...and, speaking for myself here, it doesn't really bother me if someone peeks in and can't reply to each and every post on a personal basis. This is a place to relax, take a break, and NOT have to worry about keeping up with everything.
I like to think of our 'break room' as place to meet new people.
And FYI...I know how it feels to think that a group (this one included) is 'exclusive' or 'private'. That's the reason I started this thread. hehehe I couldn't keep up with a couple of threads either. But ya know what? After having spent several months in and out of the 'break room'...I feel MUCH more comfortable about bopping in on any thread at DG that interests me.
SOoooo, Come on IN! grab some coffee or tea, and there's soft drinks in the carton by the pantry...ice in the fridge...and cups and glasses in the cupboard (Oh...they're all gone? Try the dishwaher, they're clean. Sometimes, I just don't get them 'put away'. LOL)
Mary...I know just how you feel when one of those shots gives your horse/s a reaction. I had similar things happen with my dairy goats. I felt SO bad to see a lump form, or have them limping because I hit a nerve. They still love you...;-)
Betty what a great project! Gorgeous mansion, too!
Darius...how are you feeling? I hope your bay tree makes it, too. Now that it's back home again, it'll be a lot better off.
Blooms...I love the bumper sticker! "No apparent Reason" is PERFECT! LOL (OH! I forgot to tell you...I have some Datura seedlings in GH...and *guess* where they came from? Thanks a million! Can't wait to see them in bloom!)
Now...I'm not ignoring everyone else, I'm just too lazy to go back and reread everything I can't remember. hehehe Just know that I've read it all, and got some chuckles and "gee, I know THAT feeling" from all of you.
I'm off to do the old "make my bed and get my clothes on" routine...and then I'm going to take another 'survey' for damages. We're supposed to be in a warming trend too. Probably so much so that within 10 days we'll be thinking "Oh MAN! It's HOT out here!" and will need to turn on the A/C (Is that the way 'spring' goes?
See ya later!
~julie~
M5! "But first..."? (I call it my 'domino effect!' And that's why I don't get ANYTHING accomplished. I want to do this...but first I have to...)
~julie~
Hi all....I couldn't sleep so I wander over this way to see what was happening.
Did any of you watch Oprah yesterday? VERY good show. Had this heart doctor on giving us all kinds of health tips...starting with "poop"!! Even though I just had the "butt cam" a few weeks ago...I didn't understand much about it until I saw it all explained on Oprah! I would like to have the video of that show.
I took my Tessa to the Vet for her second round of vacanations...I told my DD ...that thinks my baby is a pest!!...that the vet said she was "a beautiful little lady"....she said..."Of course he said that...you paid the bill!" LOL (She really does like Tessa...hehehe)
Lgreeno....our DG'er that built the Earth House near me.....is coming by tomorrow to get some gourd seeds I promised him. I think I'll give him the Snake Gourd I have stared...I don't like to plant things...just start seeds...I have shared a lot of gourd seeds around here...so I have a vested interest in their crops...LOL
Darius...enjoy your trip up to Todd...hugs to my cousins!
Jo
Road - watched the same program about health- I could kick myself that I didn't tape it. I did write down the info about folic acid and checked and my vitamin has the correct amount in there. DH drinks several quarts of homemade tomato juice a week, so he is all set on the lipocene (spell wrong I know) I though it was one of her best!!
We did have the hard freeze they had forecasted - I had stuck a little heater in the greenhouse and all was fine out there - phew, wouldn't want to lose all my babies!! Going out today to get all my annuals - just a tad early, but I'll let them harden off for a few days before I stick them in the ground.
80 here on Sun - we'll all be complaining then!!!
My Dr. has me on Fosamax...to build bones...and he has me on all the correct vitimans to go with it except Magnisium....have to ask my doctor about adding that...I talk folic acid twice a day. Jo
Good Morning, GOB's!
ch-ch-chillly here, so I finally turned on my propane heater, which promptly set off the smoke alarm... Duh. I wonder if I shall ever be rid of that dang blasted heater!
But now it's up to 50º outside and almost 60º in the house, where I'm still wearing a light jacket. It's suppposed to warm to 65º today, but raining and lots cooler tomorrow for my trip to Boone to see my mother in the nursing home. Yuck. BUT, I get to stay overnight with Jo's (Roadrunner) cousins whom I adore, in nearby Todd. : )
I may have found a way to pay to move me and all my junk, once I find a place. I have my mother's diamond and will have to get it appraised (assuming I can find it, LOL). As I recall, it's a good size and quality. She hocked most of her remaining jewelry about 4-5 years ago, what she didn't sell outright, and I bought it back several months later (when I still had some money). The one piece of hers I really wanted (a gold pin beset with diamonds) was in what all she sold outright, and worth 10X what she got for it. Didn't even ask me. Sigh.
Old Timers has set in... Yesterday, someone called and made an appt. I said I'd put it on my calendar so I wouldn't forget, and now I can't even remember who, when, or what. Another big sigh.
See y'all later!
My sweet cousin, Ginlyn, who lurks here but never post (come on in Ginny...) found this for me:
http://www2.oprah.com/tows/booksseen/200505/tows_book_20050503_mroizen.jhtml
Jo
Great link, Thanks Jo & Ginlyn!
Be sure to read the gallery links on that page! Almost as good as seeing the show. BTW, a tape of the show can be ordered on that page, too.
Mornin all.I'll be singing 'It's a lonely old town when your not anound' for awhile now. My sweetheart and 'the girls' just left for a trip to Tuscany. However, during the solitude I can, I hope, get the 4X8 ft window replaced, remove the sunroom sliding glass door and replace it with a single door, insulate the sunroom ceiling and replace the lighting, and reduce the size of a kitchen area window by half. Then have everything spotless by the time she returns.Might even have time to work on the yard, shop,TV room and glass shed.
Meezer, I find the 'but first--' syndrome to more often affect me as 'butt first' after sort of overdoing it.Guess old age has its own governor.
Darius, that's scary, having the smoke alarm go off when you turn on the heat! I hope you can find a safe and suitable place real soon.
The retired mason just left and will be back in the morning to mortar up all the fire brick in the backyard burn pit/barbeque.Now to see when Glen next door can replace the big window. It has begun. Sorry gobs,I gotta run. There's still a bowl of rhubarb crisp left and the tea is on so help yourselves.
Darius...I saw the tape for sale...but I want the Video! Dr. Oz says that tomatoe sauce is so important that they should name a country after it...as well as asprin...LOL
Hmmmm...sounds like Balvenie is going to be verrrrry busy. Jo
If I did the tomato sauce he recommends, I'd have to invest in antacids, too! They really tear up my stomach, big time heartburn.
I'm taking Chicken Chassuer and sautéed shredded fresh beets with onions and orange to Todd. : )
Darius- how about using an electric heater - no fumes with that!
Bal - come over to my house- I have a ton of things I want done....
Just got back from a trip to my two favorite greenhouses- trunk full, back seat and floor stuffed and even had plants between our legs and on the floor front - what a hoot!!! And I am not even half done. I need to stop ringing my beds with annuals - costs a ton, but man oh man, does it look nice when done.
I started browillia this winter and it is about 1 inch tall. Found a whole flat of it for $5.99. Sometimes I don't think it is worth it to grow your own stuff when you can get it that cheap. And it was a foot tall!!
Gonna head out side it is in the high 50's today - a heat wave!! Heard it is gonna get back down to 28 tonight tho...
Sarv, I actually have 2 ceramic elec. heaters. Alas, my entire 5 room apt. except for the kitchen is all on one 20 amp. circuit. Adding one more thing besides computer, tv and lights blows the circuit breaker.
Sounds like you had a great time with buying plants today!
Just got back from my doctor visit and am through with the dreaded "weigh in", soooooooo, I'll have some of that Rhubarb Crisp, and if there is ANYTHING chocolate sitting around I'll have some of that too. Also, I want to put real sugar in my coffee and top it off with heavy cream!! He's such a doll, gave me enough Mobic samples to last a month! That saves enough of my Rx from Canada so I can get a few more plants!
RRunner, I was one of the few people to have an adverse reaction to Fosamax. The irritation to my esophagus disguised itself as heart symptoms. The cardialogist was stumped after 24 hr monitor and stress test came out clean. I was in the middle of an echo cardiagram when the technician asked if I was taking Fosamax, when I told him yes, the mystery was solved! He gave his report to the doctor who was a little embarrassed. Sooooo, the bad news is I can't take it anymore, the good (?) news is that there is something about my body that is thin! LOL
Hmm, think I'll have one more sugar in my coffee.
Pati
Pati, those were my symptoms from the steroids that also disguised as possible heart problems, esp. when they responded to nitro. Turned out to be esophageal spasms so no more steroids/inhalers.
It's really scary isn't it Darius? Especially so for you because it responded to nitro! The worst thing that I had to do in the testing phase was take a stress test. I have taken them before when I was younger, and they weren't so bad, just a lot of huffing and puffing, but since I don't run (or walk fast) anymore, they did a chemical stress test. I should have been forewarned when they kept explaining what I would feel, and not to be afraid. RIGHT! I don't know how much they raise your blood pressure with the chemical, but I just knew this was my final bow! To make it worse I had lost a dear friend that died in the middle of his test.
Oh my, I didn't mean to get so serious. Must be from losing sleep last night. My weather alarm radio kept beeping and talking off and on all last night. Fortunately the cells split, one went north the other south, so we just got a little rain. Miami really got hammered! It just started again now, so we'll see what happens this afternoon.
Good. gloomy afternoon to catch up on some reading. We think we've got problems....Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine are in the middle of the Thomas Beckett murder!!!
Anybody got something sweet to go with my second cupa' coffee?
Pati
Pati....in addition to the Fosamax....which can give you symptoms of acid reflux type stuff...my Dr. has me on Aciphex. I asked him why I had to add yet another pill to my list. He said "because if you don't take this too you'll be going to the ER hollering you're having a heart attack"! LOL He is such a good doctor. He's the only one in town that still goes to see his patients in the nursing homes. I asked him one time if his wife knew that all the old ladies in town were in love with him...he said 'she teases me about it all the time"....LOL
P. S. My sister's doctor didn't tell her that she was to take it on an empty stomach, with a full glass of water, and nothing to eat or drink for 30 minutes...and no lying down before eating either. So her's made her sick. I am so glad that they have come out with the Once a week dose!! Jo
Your sister's doctor should be in jail!!!! Just to leave it to the patient to sort out how to take it is irresponsible. My doctor gave me something to take with it, can't remember what, and VERY thorough instructions. I took the once a week kind too. When I complained about the chest pains he did an electrocardiagram (sp?) in his office. Mine is always irrgular and there was an old one in the office. My old doctor had passed away and this was the doctor that had taken over the practice. So even though he compared it to my old one, he sent me to the cardiologist just to be sure. The cardiologist was the idiiot. Ordered all those tests and I had never even talked to him, just his aid. Some doctors let the machines substitute for common sense.
Anybody out there cooking something up? All I have to offer is some Reese's Peanut Butter Cups!
Pati
Wow, sounds like we all need to keep up our calcium intake!
My bone density test 2 years ago showed normal levels. Thankfully.
My doctor just shakes his head and says, "PLEASE don't fall down" LOL
Pati
OMG! It's after 3:30! WHERE has this day gone??? :-D
It's a glorious day here in my part of WI...and I'm taking advantage of every minute of it! I've been planting, replanting, transplanting, and dividing stuff since I left here this morning. All I can say is that in a few years 'someone' will have some beautiful plants to look at! (The "garden" ain't all that great, but the FLOWERS *will* be. LOL)
Just a few more days (10 to be exact) and my area will be "frost free" (I *hope*!) and then I can start planting the seedlings. (Well...I can *supervise* someone *else* planting them. hehehe)
Hey Robert! I'll take a piece of that rhubarb crisp! It's sounds perfect for an afternoon break.
Ooops! Gotta run...DGD's are here to help me move some bricks.
TTYL
