Please do Patrica. I would really love to see them all. So please also tell me which are the best nurseries you hit. I have gone as far as Healdsburg. Is that one in Occidental the one that has the great garden? The nursery part is small, but the garden is just fantastic.
I just knew Susie that you would just love this pretty pink pot. I am so excited that you do. I have a huge surprise for you and I just can't keep it secret any longer. I have bought you one too for your birthday. I just knew instinctively that you want one for your front steps. Tracey and Mel asked me what to get you and I told them you would love this pink pot so much that they asked me to get you one from each of them. So you will have a pretty pink pot trio for your front steps. I hope your neighbors are not the jealous kind. Please keep Bleu out there at night as protection against the pink pot nappers that no doubt will be roaming your street when word gets out.
Are Abutilons tropical??
Did I see someone say "propagate from cuttings"?
I picked one up in March up in NW Florida. It is in tree form but has a stake to hold it upright. It's about 4 feet tall now (in the pot) has green maple shaped leaves. The flower is a medium orange with red veins. Sorry I don't do descriptions very well and I sure don't take close-ups too well either.
Giving it another try with the camera. 15 shots later, here's 2 possibles. Side view
Y'All can take a trip to the Philippines and lush on all the tropical plants as far or near ur eyes can see. back there, u need not take a trip to the nurseries. the nursery comes to u. plant vendors do push cart filled with plants at ur door step. the well to do vendors drive their pick up to show off their goodies. plus they bring photos of plant flowers to show their beauty. the vendor also bring a list or catalog of other plants available for them to bring to u next trip they make.[just in case u place an advance order]. u gals and guys ain't seen nothing yet, far as tropical plants are concerned.
it is just too bad, i was not interested in plant names when i was there. some i remember by local names, not by latin names. ohhhhhhhhhhh they are such a beauty! and the colors, all colors of the rainbow and much, much more. others i distinctly remember by their fragrance. in fact, women back there don't need to wear perfume, they just pick fragrance flowers in their yard and wear them in their hair or as a corsage.
Kell, on the Monterey Bay site, words written in blue and underlined can be clicked to show the photo of the named plant. see them at ur leisure.
And here's one into the bloom. I haven't seen any of these in the site shown above, nor did I see a description that fits it well.
The man who sold this to me said it was a new hybrid and didn't have a name yet, just a number. He called it "Drunken Eyeball".
This is unusual down here and I would like to propagate it. Anyone have any info on the best successful way to do this?
Thanks,
Molly

Great, just what I need, another plant addiction!
Found this abutilon gallery. http://www.malvaceae.info/Genera/Abutilon/gallery.html

Kell, the Western Garden Nursery is Occidental is the one with the great gardens. But I just heard a couple weeks ago that it had been sold and a house was being built on the ground.
There is a little nursery right off the freeway in Sebastapol that we always go too. One year I found a five gallon sized blue Iochroma there and I got one of my nice abulitons there last year. Then we go to Healdsburg to a place that I believe is called Country Garden Hardware.
They sometimes have some nice smaller plants and have a real nice gift shop. Then when we
get to the coast, we go to Horticus Botanicus, which is in Ft. Bragg and there is a couple other nurserys and the botanical gardens there. We always find at least a couple things at each nursery. Digging dog nursery and the Albion nursery in Albion. Then on our way back we go down the coast and through Guernville and they have a nursery down there that is very small that we found some of the abutillons with the white and green varigation for my mom.
Our favorite nursery's locally are Alden Lane in Livermore, Half Moon Bay Nursery in Half Moon Bay, Orchard Nursery in Fremont and Reagans Nursery in Fremont. I have also had real good luck finding special things at Navelet's in Fremont. I am wanting to do another full day nursery tour and try out Magic Gardens in Berkely and a few other's. One of these day's I will get around to it.
Ooooo, I like that link Calif_Sue!
Ah Kell, you are too sweet. Why don't you just keep that pretty pink pot and pretend like you sent it to me? I'll take the pink abutilon that Tracey liked instead, OK?(she won't mind, she's such a good friend)
All those abutilons have got me wanting to try them again.
Any tips on propagating this? Hardwood, softwood cuttings, water or soil?
Molly
:^)))
I propagated some by simply sticking a couple joints down in the soil after dipping it in
rooting hormone and this Spring they are putting out new growth. I had them in a gallon pot
in the shade all winter. My mom does all her's this way.
Thanks JMom,
I appreciate your quick response. I shall give it a try after it grows a little more.

I LOVE the Pepto Pink Pot! Kell! I have some pink flamingos that would match the color perfectly. I like the pink abuliton and pink coleus...the first one. Add my pink flamingos and the combo would stop traffic!!!!
I am also Coleus crazy.....and they keep making them.....and I have to have them!!!
Susie knows where to get Bartley when she wants it back. She may say no to it now, but, I feel sure there will come a day when she just HAS to have it!!!
Sue, I found your Seashell on the Monterey site. So chances are I will run across sit soon the rate I am going. LOL http://montereybaynsy.com/A/abutilon_meg_seashell1.jpg
Patricia, that first one is so pretty! I love it. The second one I have, it is megapotamicum ‘Paisley.' Love your Bella pot. I bought your mini yellow one today. I went to Navlets in Fremont, thanks to you. You neglected to mention all the abutilons they had. I went nuts. Out of control. Totally berserk. I went for the Dutchman's Pipe and came out with all their maples. HELP
MollyMc, your pic is great. I will keep my eye out for that name. I am going to try to propagate them also. I love your Drunken Eyeball.
Mel I bought a great coleus today, well 9 of them at HD today. One I have never seen. And of course it has pink in it. I will take a pic tomorrow for you to see.
Ma Vie, you really scared me. I had read your post before I ran off to work and didn't have time to look at the Monterey site again. All afternoon I was thinking to myself how duh am I. I couldn't believe I missed the links. I was SO happy when I just checked and found the new 2005 ones have no links. LOL. I was really worried. I was talking about the ones that have "MBN INTRODUCTION-2005 *NEW for 2005!*
" at the end. I would love to see their new ones.
my catch of the day:
Susie let go of my abutilon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Put down the plant and nobody gets hurt..... Kell she is going to now tell you she was framed! hehehehe
Hey we were talking about taking a quick vacation, how long would it take us to get to Kell's?
Kell I can't believe you found all of those!!!!!!!!! Great score!
You still up Trace? You scored big too. LOL I would send pics but they are still in my car. $6.99 a gallon.. Thye got me on the 2 gallon ones though, $18.99.
MollyMc, do you think it may be this one? Abutilon pictum Maybe the foliage is different.
Picture from:
http://www.plantennamen.nl/plantindex/index.htm?./A/Abutilon/Abutilon
Tracey, you know I was framed. If someone said to you "look at this ugly pot I bought" how would you answer it?
Kell, where are you putting all those plants? You are going to need to make a roof garden! Which Dutchman's pipe did you get?
I bought two salvias yesterday(don't tell Mel and Tracey)
Kell,
It sure looks so very close. The bloom looks the same, but the leafs on mine are not as long and pointy and maybe a little lighter green. (Although cameras do tend to distort color sometimes).
So so close.
Molly
P.S. I couldn't find the picture on that sight. Mostly because I read nothing but english. What name did they give to it there?

I sure won't tell Mel! I heard she is being framed with that Susie girl! Can you believe it? You and your salvias, Suz. Have you checked out www.singingspringsnursery.com? They have Salvias and Coleus.
Kell, I keep telling you. I LIKE Pepto pink....and I really do have pink flamingos! I used to have a flock of plastic pink flamingos. Tacky yard art rules!
Okay .... I see I need to get some of these for my deck this summer!! Oh Kell ... Oh Tracey ...
Thanks Kell! They sell to a nursery near me. I'm calling them!
I took a bunch of Bartley Swartz cuttings, Susie. Will send you a few in your next box so you can try different places for it. Why don't you hang them up in a tree...or does Bleu climb trees too?
Yes, he climbs trees. He is very talented.
I will take care of Bartley, I have a spot all picked out for him. (actually it's the spider mites that get the abutilons, they don't bother anything else in the gardens, just the abutilons)
LOL Deb, they are addicting though less so now that Susie said the dreaded word SPIDER MITES!!! Are you sure you did not mean white fly? I have never had spidermites on mine. Please do not jinx me. Though I never have had white fly either. Last I said a similar thing was to Tracey last year about mealy bugs and I then walked out to my courtyard after and I had a tree covered in them. I could not believe I had missed them.
Molly Mc I found this one, it is just marked Abultion Orange. It is a mini flower. But it has the red orange striations like yours.

I know that snails can be a major problem with them. My mom is talking about tearing alot of her's out because of the snails.
Oh great Kell, you enabler! Navalets' is only a 10 min. drive away. Haven't been there in a long time. Now I have to check it out and also see where Orchard Nursery in Fremont is that JMom mentioned, that was the only one I am not familiar with.
And I need to make another trip to the Nor-Cal pottery outlet, I am out of large pots.
Actually, I better not go nursery shopping yet, I still have 2 trays of new plants to get in the ground and pots. Rain again isn't letting that happen anytime soon.
Actually, I will go nursery shopping again this Sat anyways, Annie's Annuals Mother's Day event. Shopping for my brother, helping him with some planting and getting his butterfly garden going as a house warming gift.

Kell, it was spider mites. I have not seen a whitefly down here. I also have mealy bugs, but not on the abutilon, they prefer coleus.
Oh Sue, do you l believe this rain??? So late to have it. Last night I went snailing for about an hour after I got home. Tell your Mom Patricia, to water well then go out after dark. I thought I had few, boy was I shocked. Squish squish.
Mel, all I can say is poor Bartley. He is a dead plant walking. Goodbye Bartley goodbye.
I missed Orchards on my last nursery loop. I love it. I love their fish pond.
Sue, I bought out their abutilons at Navlets. LOL. Well not really. They had the best assortment. They also had white ones that I did not even look at for I am into gaud, and then Tracey told me last night that white ones are rare. So of course I now want one. LOL
Yum yum in your tum.

Kell,
I think you should put up signs for a snail path. Make the path lead them out of the garden.
Hey, they put signs up on the roads for deers to cross, and they do. Why not for snails?
The colors on your last photo are very similar, but my flower never gets the flared skirt thing on it. It only stays the shape my the picture until the bloom falls off.
Ewww, nasty critters after our plants, who allowed that? And someone brought some new weevils into South Florida from Sri Lanka. They are chewing the heck out of my Brugs, Castor Bean, Passies and they taste test my coleus but decided they were too bitter I guess. Didn't anyone ever tell these things the plants are poisonous? If that's so, why can't the plant just defend itself with those toxins? I sure don't like spraying my gardens with chemicals.
:^)))
Well, I went to Navelet's and got 3 of the 1 gal. ones, man that white one was mighty purdy but I need to see how these do for me first before I can justify shelling out bigger bucks. Also picked up a Nancy's Revenge taro, got a tiny piece from Badseed last fall and it didn't make it so always wanted to replace it.
I also bought the Mobile Pink, lovely big bloom!
Good catch Sue!!! I should have asked you to see if they would special order ones. I really need the lavender one. So does Tracey. We are lusting for it.
