Are Abutilons tropical??

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have been going nuts buying them, thanks to Tracey for putting that bee in my bonnet. I have got to say the Bellas give me the biggest thrill.

So pretty Kell!!! I have to turn my head when I pass by them in the nurseries. LOL The last thing that I need is another addiction! Post more pics....maybe that will pacify me! LOL

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I also would like to know what Bellas are....Are they a variety of abulitons?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

They are a type of Abutilon. I got this description from online
Description: A wonderful selection of pastel colours for garden containers, in partial shade or as an indoor flowering house plant. Compact, dwarf plants with large, showy 3in. bell shaped flowers and multi-lobed leaves resembling a maple tree, blooming continuously even in high temperatures

http://www.backyardgardener.com/seeds/product/2300/1.html

They have the wide flared flower. Both of the above are bellas. I believe last year was the first year for them. Or maybe it was 2003.

Here is one that looks like Bella but it is too tall to be one. It is a Mobile Pink.

Brommom, I got mine at HD, Lowes and nurseries. They have them in 4 inch pots at HD that I saw the other day. The ones I showed I got from HD for $5.99 a gallon I think.

Actually Tracey is lusting after the mini ones like this picture. She has me buying these too now. We love the colors of the calyx.

I've been wanting to get those too
They are the that can go in a hanging basket?

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Kell, I have a couple that grew outside all winter and my mom has just about every kind there is in the ground, so I know they would do well for you since you don't get the cold and frost we get here.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I've got to figure out how to grow them here. They do not like something in my soil or water, plus the spidermites made lunch and dinner out of them. One Bella from two or three years ago is still hanging on.
Bellas were introduced by Royal Sluis(now Sluis and Groot) in 1999. They were an instant hit, people loved the short plants and large flowers. Sluis and Groot is a big seed/plant company like Ball seed.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

And here I did not notice them in the nurseries till last year. Abutilons do great here. I have one in the back that has been in the ground for years and years. It is a big tree. I had a huge dark yellow one to that was so old. My DH killed it one day. He said it hung over the the fence. Yes, it did and had been for 10 years. I was so sad.

Patricia, what is your Mom's favorite source for them? What kind do you have?

CC, there are hanging ones but I haven't found any lately now that I am in the mood to buy. My minis grow upward. I just planted one of my minis with a coleus. Look carefully and you will see the 2 maple flowers. I was thrilled with my matchmaking yesterday. LOL

My favorite was Bartley Swartz, I loved it. I killed it.............

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Funny you menion that one. I was looking at yours in the plant file last night. A great yellow. So you killed another poor plant. So is Bartley Swartz the same guy who hybridized CG?? We have that name wrong, I think.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Don't know what Bartley did? I guess he was famous to get a plant named after himself, lol.
I did kill my plant, it wasn't my fault, Bleu stepped on it(actually abutilons don't do good down here, I've got to work on my soil some more)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What would you do without Bleu to blame. LOL you are so lucky he does not talk English.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I was right. Kyle knew this guy I htink. Look what I found online:

CHARLES GRIMALDI (HYBRID)
Steve Brigham and his co-worker, Bartley Schwartz, decided since Dr. Suess didn't do well in high heat areas, that they would cross it with Insignis "Frosty Pink" ( more on the history of FP later on). Bartley chose a seedling that had more heat tolerance and larger flowers and named it "Charles Grimaldi" after a deceased friend of his. Charles Grimaldi was a talented Landscape Designer from the Bay area of Northern California.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Are you saying that Bleu was framed? It would be alright if he talked, just don't ever ever want him to learn to use the computer.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. As I recall just the ohter day you told me Bleu stepped on Pinkmond and killed that plant too. He must have feet the size of elephants. LOL

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

I just love these. Here is a photo of Abutilon megapotamicum "Seashells" I saw on a garden tour a few years ago. This is at Lewis & Littles home on Bainbridge Island. They specialize in concrete garden art. But anyway, here is the photo of it. I have never been able to find this plant.

Monterey Bay Nursery online http://montereybaynsy.com/A.htm lots of photos of abutilons, plus their new additions online.

Cala no prices this time, just photos of plants online.

Knoxville, TN

This one came from Cala. What is the name Suz? I know you have told me a million times. This time I promise to write it down!!! (Right O)
It never stops blooming even in the dead of winter when the poor plant looks pitiful!

Well, I went to HD yesterday and they didn't have any. Then I went to Nurseryland and nothing there also. I asked at both places if they had any Abulitons and they didn't even know what they were. I had to tell them they were a flowering maply.....then they knew. The lady at Nurseryland was the biggest surprise, as they are real nursery people. She hadn't even heard of the Bellas.

I will keep searching, as I really like these.

Donna

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I haven't seen yours Sue. I should look at the kinds on the Monterey Bay site for it. MaVie, I think most of the abutilons for sale around my house are all from Monterey Bay. I wish they had pictures of their new ones online.

Donna, I bet they will get them in. They are hot here. I hate it when I can't find what I want. I have been on a hunt now for a week for a Thunbergia Apricot Smoothie. I have gone out at least 1 hr radius around my house. I a friend has taken pity on me and is going to share hers.

Mel, that may be the one Susie killed but stills lusts after. I bet she would pay dearly for a cutting back. Hold it for a high and handsome ransom.

On the way home from work yesterday I bought another mini. I blame Tracey totally. I will pot her up in one of my new pink pots ( not Tracey the plant). LOL - - Susie. And underplant her with coleus. My other obsession.

She was labeled Peach but I think she really is megapotamicum pink.

I am trying to decide which coleus I should plant with her in her pot. This one is very pink but may be too overwhelming. Full of gaud. Just my type.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

OK KELL! I need that one, notice the need.... I have lusted over Monterey Bays site for a couple of years now MaVie, but they don't ship to anyone. The only way to get plants from them is to pick them up. I wish they would start a online store! I would love to be able to buy from them.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I do not know Tracey. What will I get from you??? Maybe I will reconsider. You did love my pink pot after all. Some people, I won't say who, sent hate emails to my poor pink pot bought for my pepto garden.

Now is this really a pink pot only a mother could love??

Kell, my mom and I go all over to buy our plants. We do an annual trip to Mendocina every year and hit every nursery we can find between here and there. We bought some really nice one's last year Western Garden nursery in Occidental. I will take a picture of a couple that I bought that I really love that are growing in my backyard.

My mom has so many, I wouldn't never begin to remember all their names.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Mel, that looks like Bartley to me, I LOVE him, I dream about him, I need him........but he didn't like Texas.
Kell, that is a lovely pot. I can't imagine someone not liking it.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)
